I think the birds and the squirrels are very hungry already. Ma has a whole host of birds visiting her backyard wall.......and the squirrels are getting braver by the minute.
I swear that soon they will be in her kitchen buttering a slice or two of bread.

I have quite forgotten how to do this......
We went to Manchester...and Bury today(not my favourite day out - I prefer to do one or the other. Doing both leaves me feeling dissatisfied, I see nothing much of either place and am run round as fast as my little legs will carry me).
1) A Roast Hog on Bury Market. I asked the chef to be on it specially for Heth.
(I know she likes nice looking young men)
2) More Roast Pig - you could have the lovely succulent slices on a barm cake.
3) The Moon, taken whilst waiting for the bus this morning.

No, I didn't. I would have liked one, but as I said, himself ran me round much too fast to really enjoy anything much.
I did promise the butcher he would be appearing on Flickr with his hog...good publicity for the market, and it might tempt folk to go and hunt for him next week and taste his cooking.

Yes, there are lots of poplar trees around this area in "managed" woods too as they are quick growing. They are just a pain in spring when their seeds are floating around -looks like it's snowing at times and it irritates my asthma!

The sky has been really blue here all day long -lovely after a grey rainy/foggy period. It's very cold though -we really feel the temps drop when it snows in the mountains.

Winter skies early this morning. The first two are looking away from the Alps, in the opposite direction, towards the Apennines which you can just see behind the industrial area. The gazebo is for the riding school when they practise in the field, Lake Garda is just beyond the mountains you can see. The 4th photo is number 2 of yesterday 24 hours on -what a difference a day makes! Then a couple with the sun behind the clouds -we are expecting snow after a first sprinkling yesterday afternoon.

The frames in photoscape are on the home button at the borttom L hand edge...there is a box which says 'No frame'...once you have a picture on your workspace you can put a margin around it or you can choose from a range of frames....it is fun to experiment.
I can lose hours just palying on Photoscape...Thanks Davemac

Thats a spanking set of winter pictures, minus 10 is a bit of a cheeky temperature.

Mrs. P. can spot a picture that would be enhanced with a bit of photoscape, more than I can, I came across photoscape, but Mrs. P has found all the best bits inside the program.

That picture with a frame around it, has gone from a good picture to something a bit special.

So get your woolly coms on, and out you go for more of the same.

Today in Pictures, the River Calder as it rushes through Padiham.

1. Behind the main street it goes over a wier.
2. Down stream we go.
3. There it goes on it's way out of Padiham.
4. Thats the bridge we are going over.
5. It's just had a coat of paint.
6. I'm going dizzy, thats the old railway bridge above this walkway.
7. Well, thats the end of the line.
8. Heading back down the old railway line, crossed this river that flows into the Calder.
9. Back at the wier, I am parked just round the corner on the car park in the distance.

It's lovely when the weather suddenly turns snowy without the snow turning to slush as it usually does here.

Looking at your robin pictures - do you feed your birds? We've just bought a 20k sack of black sunflower seeds for the hungry little so and sos in our garden!

Today's freezing shots - the Alps have come back into view!
The same view as before and a couple of variations - the little village is Marzalengo.
Sara the horse trainer was taking the horse for exercise in the Arena -out of shot.
Frozen tractor tracks -all very crunchy underfoot.
The last shot looking into the sun through the trees is a bit eery!

To answer your question Sue -having cats I don't feed the birds normally. But in this freezing weather I do put stuff out for them as the cats aren't going outside at all -the nearest they get is looking out of the window! They spend most of the day sleeping in the warmest spots in the house. The little robin is very clever -he always arrives when I go out after lunch to shake out the table cloth in the courtyard in front of the house then he feasts on the breadcrumbs!

Couldn't move for people stopping to admire Patch -he's lovely! My friend surprised me with a little box of 4 chocs -2 violet creams and 2 roses - we scoffed them all immediately!:D

5. A touch of frost.
6. A fungus with a woolly jumper on.

and with that shopping beckoned, I was beside myself with joy.

I really like numbers 4 and five dave -you are very observant spotting all these different kinds of fungus.

The photos of the windmills are quite eery in the mist, Spider -have me thinking of alien invasion!

Today in Pictures. It was proper parky up the Coppice today.

1. The Cordyceps fungi, I manage to find it again, this time frosted up, they feed on dead insects which is not the norm for fungi.
2. On the top, its a few degrees colder up here.
3. Grass pops over by the reservoirs.
4. A frozen stick with icicles.
5. The sun is going down and the sky has a dirty colour to it.
6. Avenue Parade from on high.
7. We are waiting for the sun to go down, I could do with a fur coat myself.
8. Same seat different day.
9. Its time to go, before I freeze myself to the monument.
10. Last shot of the day, before we skip off into the distance.

Thanks for that, I did question my sanity as we sat on the memorial on the top waiting for the sun to go down, and the cold was striking up my damp course.
It was minus 3 when I got to the car, so must have been at least minus 4 on the top.

You'd better ask Mrs P to lend you her pink fur boots.

Oh dear....reference piccy No 1! Lets hope there ain't any chinese looking at Accy Web, because if they see that picture the coppice will be crawling with 'em. That fungi is the magic recipe - the stuff they eat in order to win all their olympic medals. The hillside will be ravaged.

I know, whilst I didn't pick it, I did lick it, and then ran all the way up the slope to the top, did I just give its location away, if I did, it's not there.

White on white photos today -it has been snowing very heavily since yesterday evening and has only just stopped -it's knee-deep!
Miraculously my azalea has come into flower again today - I brought it inside a few weeks ago and it seems to like being on the windowsill.
I really do feel sorry for the poor birds - so hard for them in this weather. We've had an invasion of turtle doves this year as you can see in the photos.

Lovely shots, what a spanking view through the window, you probably don't notice it as you see it all the time, but those arches are very photogenic.

You may be right Dave -it's the view I have when I'm at the computer so I see it a lot;)

The old part of the farm is an amazing structure it dates back to 1760 and is all red brick. There are some older date stones inside some of the out-buildings apparently which have "16-something" on them but I've never seen them - they re-used some brick from an earlier construction which used to be across the other side of the road. Some parts are very weathered but as a whole it's in good condition. It all used to be walled in too but now only the front courtyard is, all the other external walls have gone but some old underground meat safes were found last year when they were excavating for new electric cables to be put in -amazing things, like little underground rooms all beautifully faced in brick. There was a lot of cobbling around too with large pebbles from local riverbeds but a lot of that has gone over the last few years with various work being done for the new barn..

Lovely Margaret -you see things with a different eye -love the use of "In the bleak midwinter..."!
I think I'll pinch your idea and use them as E-cards for my friends. Thanks!

You are welcome Dianne...glad you liked them
You could always keep copies and get truly personal cards(what could be more personal that your own picture of a snowy scene where you live?) printed up for next Christmas...that is really planning ahead.

Don't know if you remember the pic of the three wise men mosaic from Ravenna that I posted earlier in the year - that is our Christmas card for this year.

Inside I put a photo of the church with a caption but had to edit out the road markings on the pic first!

Man in Panama just for you Dianne!

There was an interesting programme about the Ravenna churches and mosaics on BBC4 recently showing how the Dark Ages weren't really dark.

I like the idea of personal photo's being used for greetings cards.
It means so much more than ones that are mass produced...you can put your own message inside the card.
