First four pics are our experience of an Italian storm as promised for Di the other day.

The rest are from earlier today - we had a visit from the Red Arrows as part of this weekend's seaside festival here in Morecambe. I took these pics from the bedroom window. Richard was upstairs just above taking pics out of the velux roof window on the top storey. He's got some nice closeups taken with the zoom on his horrid big heavy camera. Might post some another day if posting someone else's pics isn't cheating...

1 The campsite near La Spezia on the coast north of Pisa in the evening of arrival, mid-September 2009. The name of the campsite is Camping River...
2 The scene on awakening next morning - I say awakening, we hadn't had much sleep thanks to the storm
3 Richard (in red anorak) visiting our next door neighbour
4 Richard returning to our motorhome - just visible through the window glass and the rain
5-10 Red Arrows, lunchtime today. Note the birds on the left getting in on the act in the last pic

I love hearing the rain on a caravan/camper roof!:D

What was the occasion for the red arrows flypast? Lucky to catch them so well...

Yes - but perhaps not all night long as it was on this occasion. It's nice in a tent too...

The Red Arrows were part of the seaside festival, a weekend of entertainment which as far as I can see has b all to do with the sea - mainly pop groups on a stage about a mile away which I can hear as I'm typing this, plus the planes and a few other things down by the Midland Hotel. Doesn't float my boat at all but they have it every year. They also have a kite festival and a sandcastle festival plus other "music" festivals during the summer.

Love kites -sandcastle festival sounds good fun too -am a big kid at heart!

Would love to be on the seafront eating a 99!

More Lakes shots -1-8 a walk up Place Fell near Ullswater then 2 shots from other walks in the area to show dark skies. It's amazing how the weather changes when you're out -you have to be prepared. No7 shows Broherswater as seen from Place Fell, path to Hellvelyn to the left.

2) Kite surfer - seen on the West beach.
3) going down - the kite surfer sinks into the sea.
4) View from the Orme Tram.
5) The Esplanade at Llandudno - seen from the tram.
6) Number 4 Tram - going up the Orme...we were coming down on Tram 5
7) young girls on West beach....given a sepia treatment and a black border
8) Tram number 5. Given the Sepia treatment....wish the tram drivers were in Victorian costume.

Last time I was in Llandudno Margaret i think i was about 13. We had a lovely week weatherwise. Looks like it hasn't changed much - except for the modern watersports.

Nice pics. Love the shot of your girls on the beach -Jack Vettriano style! Timeless in the seppia colour...

I took quite a few pics of people on the beach.........I like the unposed look.....they didn't know they were being taken......and I couldn't ask them as I was too far away.......behind the sea wall, and a very pebbly stretch of beach.
Have a look at my flickr pics.

I was in Llandudno last weekend. My wife was feeling just about well enough to go away so I managed to get a last minute booking in a little cottage at Nant Y Glynn near Old Colwyn, five minutes for the sea. We have friends and relations there and they took us to Llandudno for a meal but we didn't get chance to look around. I take a little mobo scooter in the car for my wife and she really enjoyed herself whizzing along the prom at Rhos, it did her a power of good.

The only photo I took were at Rhos on Sea and the cottage where we stayed, it's the first on the left opposite my car.

We rent a house not too far from the pier.
I like Llandudno. Especially when I take Ma in her chariot. I take her along the Esplanade and she gets a good blast of sea air.

This time I went with my daughter and her family...Ma was envious.

Glad you were able to get away for a break with your wife Gremlin......it was a fair week for the weather too.

Today in Picture, it felt like we had journeyed up the Orinoco.

1. View from pot house lane across Ossy.
2. Walking around Jackhouse Reservoir we arrive at the top Res (empty) and follow the stream that runs through the now tree covered area.
3. This is a fly on a flower, or a flower with a fly, I cant decide.
4. This is the stream that enters the top res.
5. This is a bit further up.
6. I never expected this.
7. This is back up a bit in order to go around the waterfall.
8. After a climb we followed the stream to within a stones throw of Haslingden Old Road.
9. You can see the blades for the next wind turbine laid out ready, they are huuuuge.
10.Missing out the descent, we arrive back at Jackhouse, next the walk along Pot House Lane, to the car.

I have to say when I found the waterfall I wasn't sure where I was, it was only when I spied Hassy Old Road and the first erected turbine I roughly knew where I was.

Not sure about the fly, as it wasnt flying , and it didnt hover, it was just having a bit of dinner.

Gardensafari Hoverflies (with lots of pictures)

The mouth parts are unique to this species, the Heineken hover-fly. Well thats my best effort at identifying, what do you think? Its in section 4 scroll down to almost the bottom of the page.

Yep, think you've cracked it.
Heineken Hoverfly - Rhingia campestris | Flickr - Photo Sharing!

Well done, that was a toughie. The way it holds its wings is odd, most hoverflies have them spread out rather than folded. That snout is a dead giveaway.

View from the top of Place Fell -Brotherswater center and Hellvelyn should be to the right -though friend Dave who was there at the time told me the path to the left is the one that takes you over and then on to Hellvelyn -he's the one with the Wainwright guides!!:D

Can now get where you were the other day as you've placed Red Screes from where I know...

I have been taking photos for more years than I can remember (or wanted to) but because of this thread I decided to buy a macro lens.

My first efforts are not very good, mainly due to the breeze moving the plant.
I am not as nimble as Davemac so won't be crawling around on my knees where the sway of the bushes is less noticeable.

The photo of the thing with the long legs was taken on the patio glass doors with some kitchen roll stuck behind.
You can see my first effort with my reflection on it in picture 5.

Glad you are giving macro a try-out, you are doing OK as your first set of pictures show. You should have seen my first efforts. The crane fly is an insect I cant manage to photo, well not well, I can get shots of where it used to be, before it flew off. The reflection shot is different.

Re: Today in pictures

I also like the reflection shot -original and we can now see you don't look like a Gremlin!;) Nice shots from your short break too -always nice to have an unplanned break -often the best ones are improvised.

I find insects difficult to take -don't have a Macro and they never seem to stay still long enough -especially butterflies!

Dave last lots were good - loved the waterfall close-up and the fly really jumps out at you - off to have a look at mine from yesterday -went out late afternoon to start a Barbecue but my son took over and I had a wander with the camera...

One person's mistake is another person's arty shot! I've done a few like that but the main reflection is my red camera rather than me!

Still coming to terms with the macro setting on my compact camera and like you Gremlin I'm not as nimble as Davemac so can't get down in the long grass!

You don't have to be nimble to get down, its controlled falling, its the getting up that invites grunts

2 Door at the back of the old church, Sisimuit, Greenland
3 Reconstructed Viking church and longhouse (in the back ground), Brattahlid, Greenland The Fate of Greenland's Vikings
4 Posh dining area on board cruise ship Discovery
5 Cork library
6 Brightly coloured shop/office, Cork
7 Somewhere in Cork
8 Turkey comes to Cork
9/10 Georgian doorways in Cork - Irish ones seem to be wider than here, and often have the two side pieces as in pic 9 - I've seen similar in Dublin

Aha! that makes sense - though I can't say I noticed them in Bath! We lived in a Georgian house in Warwick but it was 1806 and our door was normal size - the fashions in frocks had changed by then!

BTW sorry uploading cockup - reference to no 9 in my previous post should have been to 10.

It's amazing how you can think of a theme and make a collection ...

Don't worry - I've got lots more - themes, that is. Should keep me going for a while at 10 pics per day - no need to go out for more!

Just a coincidence that we should both hit on doors today! Yours are great BTW - such lovely old buildings... and you can actually see a cow in one of them!

I am starting to get hooked on this macro photography since I got the new lens.

Two more pictures to make up my quota for today.

By the way Margaret I like the Llandudno photos, the ARP poster reminds me of the time I was in it. I was only about 4 years old and the ARP chaps let me be an honorable member, they had a room above the Walsden Co op butchers (near Square road) and they used to stand me on a buffet to play darts.

We never got any action because the enemy stayed well away.

Nice flutterby, they are prettier at a distance though -bu then I'm not a big fan of insects...

I agree mobertol, when you enlarge the photo you can see it's hairy back and just how ugly the face part is.

I don't know the names of many insects and don't usually bother about them but seeing as the lens cost a fair amount of money I want to be able to use it.

Don't have a Macro myself Gremlin personally I would like to zoom in better on flowers -usually find they end up out of focus -must be the "Delirio Tremens"

or the shakes as they are better known in Lancs!:D

6) Ironwork decoation on the ridge tiles.
7) A vista of West Beach - the children love it here.
8) The Grand Hotel. Taken from the pier.
9) sail boat - yes the sea was this colour. I took this from the top of the Orme...with maximum Zoom

9/10 Georgian doorways in Cork - Irish ones seem to be wider than here, and often have the two side pieces as in pic 9 - I've seen similar in Dublin

Today in Pictures, a walk that is more or less level today.

1. Small Tortoiseshell Butterfly, this butterfly landed at my feet just after we set off, so just had to take his photo.
2. Came across a large patch of Globe Thistles just over the swing bridge at Church, there are usually scramble bikes ripping this bit up, but today it was deserted.
3. Bee on a Globe Thistle.
4. Its a Cramp Ball fungi.
5. Walking along Hyndburn Brook Toward Rishton Dip. For some reason the brook today had a bit of a pong.
6. Round the bend towards the old factory.
7. This amount of gravel wasn't here the last time I walked this way.
8. Wheres the Weir? were, there, Oh!
9. You have to look close, but, this is an infestation of black Aphids on Balsam being farmed by ants. There is a maggot at the top, but haven't a clue as to his reason for being there.
10. This is growing 3 feet from the main road, I think its a Bolete mushroom.

Glad you are having a go at wickthings, mind they don't shoot up your nose. I did wonder if anyone captured the sunset tonight, it was visible from my house which is unusual, as I don't have a view to the horizon. Nice shots by the way.

I think Gremlins photo shows of the hairy bits better than mine, I cant seem to get much of a sideways shot with butterfly's that have their wings open.

With regard to the zoom for the wickthings is it that you cant get close enough. I would go closer rather than zoom if possible.

rather use the zoom ... that way i dont get too close dont like insects too much .. they sting, they bite and i end up wi a big red spot ... plus the camera refuses to take pics from time to time ... kind of saying that its too close or its zoomed in too much ...

this camera ive got now was my christmas pressie 4 years ago from the spugster ... have took something like 18000 photos with it .... :D its been dropped, photos in the rain, kicked etc etc ... think the only thing i havent done to it is set fire to it ... but it fits in my pocket, it has AA batteries not a rechargeable one that will run out after taking 300 photos ... and thats the problem ... 90% of the cameras nowadays are the rechargeable batteries ... i prefer the AA batteries ...that way when it runs out ..i can change em and you can get them everywhere. Like on saturday .. i took over 700 photos of the preston guild .. i wouldnt have got half of them if it had been a rechargeable one.

Margaret Pilkington 04-09-2012 07:34

Re: Today in pictures

My camera has a rechargeable battery and it takes pictures forever.......I haven't calculated how many exactly......but in Wales I took more that 200 pics with it and it still hasn't been charged.
I have a spare battery too, which is charged and in the camera case. My Camera has a GPS setting....if that is switched on then the battery doesn't last long, but I check that the GPS is off.
I like my little camera......I haven't tried dropping it, or kicking it...and I am a bit reluctant to take it out in the rain........but Davemac has a similar camera and rain doesn't seem to stop him from taking pics.

i too have a rechargeable, and mine is a dslr, canon eos d400, i have 2 batteries, when i go on walkabout, the battery will last me a good 24hrs, so 48 hours (i think about it as time before i need to find electricity), i also have 2 lenses a 18-55mm, and a 75-200mm, the problem i am facing is, the weight difference between that and a little compact i have, but the canon takes miles better pictures, when you are carrying 15kg round up fells, it makes a difference by the end of day 2, plus everything is usually "damp" by then, so it weighs at least 20kg, the weight of a full dslr with the lenses, compared to the weight of a compact, i might take em both next time and compare the pictures, a future possible thread there?

love the scales, and (this sounds weird) any chance you have, or could take, one of the chains wet? think some oil or water would gave loads of texture.

I think you should talk to somebody about this.

What type of compact have you got, and how is the canon taking better shots.
I just get curious how people take shots and what equipment they have used, especially if I think "I wished I had taken that shot"

for a start the compact is a little point and click hitachi, and it will only take the "standard shot" landscape, portrait.....full auto, yaydayyadayada, you know the score, i use it when im djing, and hand it out for people to take around the room, they bring it back, i put their piccies on a screen then burn em to disc for em to remember their evening.(intrestingly enough, and a bit of a thread wander i once gave it out when asked to do a Sunday afternoon at the railway in Huncoat, as i was carrying my stuff in the locals from the bottom of whinney hill were carrying it out of the other door, needless to say they were only joking, and my equipment was returned, except for my camera didnt come back to me that day, probably my own fault, but at least they weren't members of a criminal gang that terrorised a community, murdering anyone who got in their way, and if you understand that, good, if not ignore anything bracketed) it that sort of camera

no DoF adjustment, and i do like a bit of the old DoF, to go with my wet chains

(dirty laugh, sid james style)

I have taken photos for a transport and machine forum for years and only just started to get interested in macro. I borrowed a book from the library and also bought one specific for my camera to learn more about macro photography.
The advice I got regarding macro is to get as close as possible, if there is a slight movement left or right then it will be exaggerated the further away you are, basic trigonometry.
The lady who does my gardening was watching me take the photo of the butterfly and she said I was only an inch away.
The trouble with getting too close is the light can be blocked out by the camera if you are not taking notice, I also only use manual focus.

My main interest is big machinery or vehicles, motorcycles, steam engines, ships, planes or lorries. Although they are not "Today in pictures" the ones below are some I took for the magazine, I used a film camera rather then digital for some of them and lost a bit of quality through scanning them.

Whilst I say, you choose the camera that you are comfortable with, some people dismiss the compact as just that compact. I use a compact fujifilm F500exr and apart from interchangable lenses it does most things a SLR or a Bridge will do and is 16 megapixels.
Having said that we all choose a camera for different reasons, my main reason for choosing mine was, it had to fit in my top pocket. Not a photographical reason, but a reason to take photos, as its always in my top pocket. I even have a pocket in my pyjamas, just for chance something crops up in the night.:camera8:

my dad was big into steam, but his thing was traction engines, all through the seventies & eighties,(he died in 85) as i was growing up, we would be at steam engine rallies, camping over the weekend, the last weekend we had with my dad was masham, steam rally, the "biggest", he used to say, we got back on the monday and he died of a heart attack on the tuesday. i was only 14, and back then i didnt appreciate, how he got to spend his lasft few days doing what he loved, as i am now older and wiser, i do

thanks for the pics, they made me think of him again

Love the machinery, you can smell the oil and steam, and with the lathe you can smell the metal shavings.

With getting close to stuff for the macro shots, if you don't get close enough you miss the thrill of having a wasp fly up one of your nostrils, or ants running up your trouser leg, I would recommend this to anyone.

Just to show you how sad I am when it come to machinery.
I stumbled across the old building near the holiday cottage we rent at Gatehouse of Fleet and couldn't resist a peep inside.
Lo and behold, another treadle lathe, there were things there untouched for years including an old air compressor last tested in 1939.

Looking at the lathe in the last picture it appears someone has been in for a crafty drink since then.

You would have a field day here -there is a huge range of equipment, old and new around -Tractors are just getting bigger and bigger -they also have a small combine here which is for the maize.

I went to see the huge steam engine working at Wigan Pier when my eldest was 5 so nearly 20 years ago -was very impressive.
