At least you gave it a go, how do you manage to get the focus through a moving bus window? A technique all your own I think

all i do is hold the camera as steady as i can be if the bus has a bit of a windowsill all the better, tilt the camera so you dont get a reflection, and press the button ... and thats what comes out ... tho these are the ones that didnt really come out ...:D:D:D oh and dont forget your moving so if you think oh that would make a nice picture you might have gone past what would and get the fencing a wall or whatever ... oh and practice ... lol have tried taking pics from a virgin train coming through the lake district .. they came out a bit interesting ... lol

1) canal side flora.....cow parsley, hogweed......it seems that these plants are difficult to identify
2) Canal side flora, with a visitor...which I didn't notice when I was taking the shot.
3) more of those flowers.
4) reflections on the still water.
5) One of them thur rings(spindles sptted this one - I owe him 50pence!
6)Clover
7) A Beatles wig growing on a tree.
8) a yellow flower that i suspect may be the precursor to the wig
9) Baby snail, hiding in the grass...well, it could hardly make a dash for it!
10) Grown up snail with a damaged shell.....maybe it was thrown by an irate gardener.

i have to admit I didn't notice the damaged shell until I put the pics up on the computer.

Though so Margaret, that's a Clematis tangutica, not really wild, could be a garden escape. I had one in my last garden, it went bananas, ground level to covering over the back gate in no time flat, had to cut it back really hard so we could go in and out! Very pretty though, haven't managed to establish one here.

Mrs P. your technique, and dare I say, fearless approach has come on leaps and bounds with the new camera. That dint on the snails shell is with getting to close with the camera.

Today on my little walk I was accompanied by four intrepid explorers.......doing a bug hunt...something they have been assigned to do in the holidays by the school.
I was a bit nervous about taking four tinlids along the canal bank....I extracted a promise from all of them that they would do exactly as they were asked. The consequences of a failure to comply would be that we would turn back.
Here are some of the pictures of the walk.
1) Looking in nooks and crannies - a spiders web sprinkled with dew.
2) barging down the leeds and Liverpool.
3) the lady gave us a wave.
4) Drake on a swimming platform...it's an old pallet really
5) ducks having a feeding frenzy......a bit of old carpet must have been harbouring something good to eat.
6) fat Rose hips on a dog rose bush.
the next three are a bee on a thistle.

You don't have to post photos, just tell us what you think from time to time so we know we are "hitting the spot" and if you have an area you would like to see, let us know and perhaps a walk in that direction might be a possibility.

Oh to be in Italy now that summers here:D

Thanks - haven't got any this year... they usually self seed. Wouldn't mind some of those peaches too... amazed to see those considering the cold winters you get. And the watermelon - okra - chilli -aubergine - all growing outside quite happily! Though I guess your soil is good, being in the Po valley.

The close ups wer taken with my new camera . I don't normally like a camera without a viewfinder as I find they are hard to see in the sunlight. The other pics are taken with my Sony DSLR camera . I cant do close ups with my Sony camera unless I buy a macro lens which are dear.

That's interesting, Frank. One of the reasons I am reluctant to upgrade my tatty 3x zoom Fuji compact is that I have always used an optical viewfinder but it seems that they are almost non-existent on modern compacts. Mrs P and I have been discussing this between ourselves for a while. Seems if I want a new camera with more zoom I am going to have to bite the bullet and move to using a screen.

Must say I like the look of your new little toy having been reading around it today.

16, 17, 18 & 20, are of the old butts and target frames, spent some hours there in the 1950's & 60's until it got closed. Must be over 50 years since I was last there, when were were informed that it was to close, I put 5 rounds of tracer down the range, when we saw the effect, no wonder they closed it, the back stop was so eroded it no longer stopped bullets.
I would have thought the ****** would have stripped all the metal out years ago.

38. Its a bit small, the branch was pencil thick.
39. Heading out.
40. Almost out.

Thats your lot, might not be any tomorrow, I'm on gardening duty. Its only a postage stamp, but its got away from me.

We both got mucky and smelly as well, that marshland is a bit stagnant, so yes it was bath time for both of us, but not at the same time, he wouldn't get in my dirty water.

If you found them in the mound in front of the targets, then those are ricochets, they are all deformed, so have will have gone through the targets, I do know of one person who was up there digging bullets out recently, he posted some pics and info on another web site.
It became very dangerous on that range, you could hear ricochets often, some times louder and closer than we liked, as I said in my other post, tracer showed the problem.
I think the Army were the last to used that range, getting rid of surplus & outdated ammo.

I think the majority of the metal work has just rusted down, the safety sheets are mostly in place. The bullets I found never hit the target, but this area. Or stuff bouncing off as you say.

Sorry Dave, but those bullets never hit those plates, those bullets in your picure have been struck many times by other bullets, you can see that from the deformation, I've dug 1000's of bullets out of backstops at Diggle, melted the lead out of them, for reloads, proper bullet metal has a 5% antimony content for hardness, so I added 2% tin which helped to lubricate my cast bullets down the bore & prevented fouling. That mix of bullet metal worked really well in my old black powder Remington Revolver, most of it ended up in the back stop on the pistol range back up at Diggle.

Look like 7.62's & 9mm standard SLR, SMG & Browning rounds all prior to the introduction of the SA 80, mid 1980's using the standardized NATO 5.56mm round, Mind you the jimpy (GPMG) still used as a fire support weapon & is 7.62mm.

The army did fire a lot of the early 7.62's up there, some of it was made by Greenwood & Bately, but they lost the contract.
7.62 cartridges made by Greenwood & Bately are now collectors items.
If your lucky you might find some .280's, that was tried as the new British calibre, before Churchill went along with the septics, who wanted the 7.62 to be the standard round, which was a shortened version of their 30-06, known as the .308 Winchester.

Lucky girl! I normally get them coming up under the bird table where the birds have dropped them from the feeder. Haven't seen any this year - think the birds have been too greedy.

Tried to capture that Mantis a bit better - he is very photogenic, brilliantly camouflaged against the bark of the tree and doesn't move but the camera seems to focus better on the leaves than him. Don't know if the problem is man or the machine...:D

Odd creatures -they move very slowly and are quite acrobatic -often hanging upside down. I don't know if they bite or sting...

I imagine it must eat flies and other small insects.

Thank goodness - they are ugly bugs aren't they?!

I have seen green ones here too but they are really hard to find.

It took me a while to find this one again today -though longer yesterday, he blends in very well with the background.

You had better start looking out for them on the canal - probably no bites or stings to worry about! And no cheating with plastic ones!

Part 1. Today in Pictures, it was a short walk but managed a few snaps, some you might have seen before but a different perspective.

1. With this view behind me , off we go.
2. Looking left as we went right.
3. Over the motorway.
4. After putting on my hover boots, took this of Rishton.
5. Ring a ring of six spot Burnets.
6. Rock face on the motorway.
7. Looking up Dill Hall Lane, the sun is a bit reflective for a sharp picture.
8. View of where all that waste goes.
9. Over the motorway, I'm going all dizzy.
10. Across the field.

Part 2. Today in Pictures, why is it a short walk takes over an hour.

11. I never got the hang of those French toilets, but I gave it a go anyway, there was no paper after all that.
12. Thats the view to the right, we are not going that way.
13. Thats the view straight forward, we are not going that way either.
14. Thats the view left, and Bob is already on his way.
15. Thats the view in the field as we went towards Burnley Road.
16. This nearly split my differential, it was a chain harrow long forgotten, and grass grown through it.
17. A view to the right as we went left.
18. They mustn't get many supporters who sit down.... I know ...Ood a thowt it.
19. Look left as we turned right and towards Clayton.
20. That was the last shot as we went down the road, and the rest of the afternoon gardening.

Well the deed is done... and it's your fault Frank!

I have ordered a new camera -
Olympus VR-340 Smart 3D Camera Red 16MP 10xZoom 3.0LCD: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics

It's the same as the one Frank has just got though goes by a different model number for some reason.

It's red... yes I know but I'm a girl (well was once) and it matches my laptop - no not my eyes!

Frightening how easy it is - just one click and I've got camera, case, spare battery and memory card on the way. Whoopee!
