This set of ten are:-
1) shadows of washing on next doors line
2) scene from the top of the bus.(I bet you thought that Dave had lent me hi s hover boots :D)
3) Manchester city centre...New Cathedral Street...long shot.
4) Manchester cit centre, New Cathedral Street again, but closer.

7) Another one of the street performer..people were coughing up good money to watch him.
8) A thumbs up for the camera - only because I donated to his particular charity.

Yes
Wahoy Res is off Green Arms Road off the A666 between Darwen andBolton. From the car park you can walk around either Enwistle Res or Wayoh or combine the two in a figure of eight.

More photos of Lake Garda - in and around Gargnano, a trip on the Lake to Malcesine and up to Riva del Garda, before returning to Gargnano. My favourite place on the Lake -a hidden gem!

First batch of 10 starting in Villa di Gargnano -walking through the village and along the walkway by the Lake to Gargnano.

(The stone construction with open sides near the church is a lemon grove. They slot slats of wood into the spaces in winter to protect the lemon trees.)

When you walk through woodlands from the Sparth Hotel entrance use the top path that runs close to wilsons playing field, when you get to the carved owl, go left and follow the stream, its half way down on the right. The path will join the top path again in about 15 yards. Hope that helps.

I think you are quite the H2O specialist Dave -love the droplets -amazing reflections you manage to capture in them every time.

It is them Margaret - we went to have a short break with them 2 years ago.

Try Googling Hotel Gardenia Gargnano - they have a very interesting website -you can read it in English too. It is a lovely Hotel -perfect for a romantic break! The little village has added interest as DHLawrence stayed there while finishing his book Sons and Lovers:)

Also Mussolini lived there between 1943-45 in a place called Villa Feltrini. The hotel was a private house then and was comandeered by him to house some of his ministers.

(I swear i do not work for the Italian tourist board!;))

Sometime I go out and look for landscape shots, and come back with a camera full of wickthings, and then I will go out for wickthings and come back with waterfalls, it just shows I'm easily distracted or I get lost a lot. Myself I think its both, if only I could remember !

As I'm not getting out much at the moment, may I be permitted to post some photos of a not so recent Today in pictures? It's also an antidote to all the Italian sun posted by Dianne, if you need one!

Just two years ago, July 2010, we went on a cruise whose destination was the island of Spitsbergen in the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard, about 600 miles from the North pole. One of the places we visited was the mining settlement of Barentsburg (the islands have a lot of coal). This is a Russian settlement as there is an international agreement regarding exploitation of the mineral resources of the islands. The settlement was abandoned financially by the Russian government in the seventies and although recently some finance has been forthcoming the place is still very rundown and poverty stricken, not helped by the fact tht there have been problems in the mines.

It is however a fascinating place to visit, a timewarp and hard to imagine how people exist in such conditions including extreme cold, several months of polar night and little infrastructure. We only had two hours there, much of which was taken up with negotiating the many steps which take you up the steep slopes. It's one of the most interesting places I've been to and we were still back on the ship in time for dinner!

I've posted some photos from this trip before on other threads, not sure if any of these were included. Apologies if so.

1 This is where we are - the ship's GPS readings
2 That could be it
3 The settlement from the ship
4 The power plant
5 View from the other side of the ship
6 Approaching the dock in the tender boat
7 View of the steps from the tender
8 The power plant from the tender
9 It's closing in behind

9 The culture centre, with museum and Polar Star shop. Some cracking souvenirs - fur hats, Russian dolls and paintings and poker work by the inhabitants - mainly of polar bears - I bought a small painting and a pokerwork plaque as I wasn't going to see polar bears any other way
My garden gnome on left of picture! He bought a cap with polar bear logo
10 Barentsburg logo - a miner and polar bears with Russian and Norwegian flags

3 Ah - they've seen him at last...
4 Lenin with peace symbol behind on the hill

6 Monument to something that happened in 1948 - no translation so can't tell you what it was
7 Small flowers in the grass
8 The tiny Russian orthodox chapel built as a monument to those killed in a plane crash
9 78 parallel cafe bar - not the place to be any more
10 We made friends with these two very talented Rumanian musicians working on the ship - today they were detailed as escorts for this trip - think they want to get back in the warm

He is used to it now, he just sits down and waits, but will be posting a picture of him in "todays" which sort of tells you his mood, just looking at the stuff others have posted first.

just checked there is only you so far.

I know I said I don't like wick things but the Mayfly is quite beautiful...and the wings look like they are made of lace. I wonder if it was resting because of the wet......It can't be easy to try and fly when your wings are waterlogged(unless of course they are water wings)
I think you must have a very steady hand..or a very wet vest(from lying on the ground).

I think it was as waterlogged as I was, I am usually on my knees, unless I fall over or down a slope, which I do on a regular basis.

Great pics Sue....it does look very austere though.....no bronzed bodies, sunbrella's, drinks with a sparkler in them.

Lovely set of photos today Dave - the wet adds a certain something. Poor Bob is definitely a wet bob today - ready to row for Eton!

Love the pic of the squirrel in the bin! He's just saved himself £75 according to the sticker.

BTW Margaret that's not a mayfly but a damselfly, see these links.

I do have inflatable underpants, so I am prepared. I have trained bob to use the camera, so if I go in the canal, it should be posted here the same day.

I always get confused between damsel flies and dragon flies... discovered tonight that dragonflies tend to hold their wings horizontally while mayflies tend to hold them parallel with their bodies. You learn something every day!

I'm still at the design stage, the tests have only been partially successful. The underpants inflate as they should, but upon inflation they bob to the surface, plunging my head under water, which is not what was in the design brief or briefs.

you are both very naughty........I laughed a lot at the inflatable latex pants.....but Dave I have to say I laughed even more at the thought of you bobbing(no pun intended) along the canal in a pair of these with a frill on them....and then you conjure up the picture of you head down, and supping canal water because of the design of these inflatable pants.
Maybe you should start work on an inflatable vest.

Dave's droplets are lovely as ever -but the Damsel fly (wouldn't have known the difference with a dragon!) is fabulous. Incredibly delicate and quite beautiful.

Sue's pics of Barentsberg are interesting too - very grey and forbidding -I'm always complaining about the relentless heat and sunshine here bu it makes you think to see where some people live!

Looking forward to more pics later -will see if I have any nice ones to post....Have more on my PC than laptop but i never switch it on these days!

Nice bee bum in no 6!

I'm envious - can't grow lilies as there seems to be lily beetle here and in my last garden which just wrecks them - though the beetles are quite pretty! I do have a couple of lilies in a pot which seem to be OK -bought the bulbs from Morrisons a few years ago and they seem to be immune but all others, expensive ones bought on the net, have succumbed.

And foxgloves are one of my all time favourites - but they never come up where I want them, having self seeded in the garden they're always in the wrong place. And if I transplant them they don't like it - grrr! So I put up with them among my veggies cos they're pretty!

Oh yes poppies - I like the taller opium poppies with the big seed heads. They appeared spontaneously in my last three gardens - the seeds can lie dormant for up to 100 years until you disturb the ground. In this garden they didn't come until this year when two plants appeared in the path - which then had to be dug up for the drains. And they hadn't flowered so no seeds - and not sure I've got any old seeds left from my other gardens - though I did save plenty at one time but spread them all over here to no avail. :(

Today I went for a short stroll along the towpath...it was much shorter that I wanted it to be. I went out with one dead battery and one with onlu a sip of power in it......so not many pics.
But......But, I did take some pics of insects...and a humbug coloured snail.
Have a look at these.
Pictures in the style of Davemac.
1) Thistle do...a thistle on the canal bank. Offering a resting place to a visiting insect.
2) thistle reprise. More bugs.
3) A raspberry basking in the sun.
4) Nature's Diamonds...sparkling in the sun.
5) A damselfly having a drink from one of the droplets...I could hear it slurping...no manners, these damselflies.
6) could be mistaken for a humbug - not scared of these...they never move that fast unless being thrown by an angry gardener. I like the colours and the texture of the shell.
7) this plant looked like cow parsley...but was a mauve shade. Sue will be along in a minute to tell me what it is(I hope).
8) thistle with two visitors...see I told you I was getting brave. my courage was screwed up into a tight ball and I had my running shoes on.

Re: Today in pictures

Margaret love the pics especially bugs on thistle in no2. Think insects in last pic are hoverflies.

As for the cow parsley type flower - they are v difficult to tell apart without a good look at the leaves and flower structure. The plant in your pic appears to have spots on the lower stem - could be hemlock! but can't swear to it. Have been trying to find a decent pic on the net of one with a blotchy stem but doesn't appear to be one. Hemlock is often very tall so might not be that but otherwise can't tell you what it might be!

Re: Today in pictures

Well you could have had some pics of the Lancaster canal today... had a hospital appt, finished early, time to kill, sat by the canal in town in bright sunshine and a lovely warm breeze. And I didn't take the camera! :(

Lots of things to photograph - swans and cygnets, a lacy wooden bridge, lots of boats, plants - all in my mind's eye, sorry that's all!

Then a wander through town, lots more things sprang to the eye, of course! have to go again tomorrow - it'll probably be raining! :idunno:

Margaret Pilkington 18-07-2012 18:36

Re: Today in pictures

it does look like water hemlock(or the pics that google has of the plant)......the stem was speckled and although you say Hemlock is a tall plant, this wasn't particularly tall, but then I did take from the position of the canal bank...so my perspective of it was looking down on it...not a good position to judge the height.

All that talk of scary insects, it was just a bluff until you came up with these, very interesting by the way, my best guess for picture 7 is cow parsnip, related to the giant Hogweed, but it can be a pain identifying these types of plants
