Well, today in pictures, was a sudden rush of blood to my head. I thought lets have a look at Gamblers Caves, What a disappointment that was. I will upload the picturesque stuff later.

1. Its over that hill and far away, we were on the coppice.
2. that hill lies between me, and the hill I have to climb.
3. I just realised , I'm to old for this game!
4. Where did this steep bit come from?
5. Stopping for a moment to get my breath back, I looked back where we had travelled from.
6. This is the Kings Highway.
7. At last my end is in sight, should have worn better trousers.
8. Gamblers Caves has become a hole in the ground.
9. And a tip.
10. Time to turn around and return home.

Slightly more picturesque Today in Pictures.

1. Looking over the coppice and beyond.
2. He makes this jumping over styles look easy, well he would I have to lift him.
3. Spire Farm, I used to help out here occasionally when it was a working farm. The Hardy's had it then.
4. Why are the steep bits always uphill?
5. There it is Hameldon, but it doesn't feel like a hill.
6. Another bit, that is either up or down.
7. I'm going to lick that, it might be gingerbread.
8. Up a hill looking down.
9. I climb all the way up here, and still find dumped rubbish!
10. Back on the coppice again.

Love these flower pics especially the thistle.

Isn't that "variety of dock" what is commonly known as bistort?

Your Bob is looking very trim. Has he just had a haircut?

I'm not sure of the variety of dock, I just went off the leaf, not a specialist in wild flowers, but I get by.

No, he has not had a trim, he is halfway to his next one.

Looked out of the window and it is persistant rain, so its waterproofs again today.

other names for it is snakeweed/dragonwort.....and it can be used as an astringent, and it is supposed to be good for treating catarrh and diarrhoea....or at least a concoction of the root is.
Enjoy your wet walk.
I feel a bit deprived. I was going to go out and look at what was going on for the Jubilee Celebrations in Mercer Park, and take some pics - somehow, I don't think there will be much happening in the way of picnics and the like.

I was also going to photograph the local street party - but that also looks unlikely now. Drat!

Yes, pretty sure it's bistort, I have some of the cultivated sort in my garden. It's not actually in the dock genus most of which have pretty insignificant greenish flowers.

Well trimmed or not Bob is looking pretty good, can the same be said for his human??

Raining here too, only just found out (you wouldn't think we lived here!) that Morecambe is attempting to break the record for the longest street party today. If it goes as far as they hope we should be able to see it from our house as it will be going along the prom and past the gap between the houses through which we can see the prom and the sea. I wonder if it will get that far in the rain. We might take a wander down if the rain stops otherwise I will be watching the Thames pageant on TV.

Flickr: davemac43's Photostream Thanks to Mrs. P. and her guidance, I now have a flicker page, and on it, is one of Bob when he really requires a haircut.

Up to now I have managed to remain incognito, but I am aware that Mrs.P. is ready with camera to capture my image should our paths cross.

You are most welcome Dave. You have some very good pics on there. I would encourage those who take a peek at the snaps to leave a comment.....it is always encouraging to see people have looked at your snaps - even better when they tell you that they like them.

There are some on your flickr pages that I am envious of.

As for recognition...it might be Bob that gives it away.

I suppose you are too young to remember Lobby Lud........an advertising gimmick used many years ago by the Daily Mail....you had to be carrying a Daily Mail, accost the fellow with the phrase 'I believe you are Lobby Lud, I claim my ten bob' mind you that was when ten bob was worth something. :D

Well decided to go out in the wet and get a few piccys before coming back to watch the pageant on TV.

Here goes... they're a bit grey but it's a record of part of my day and perhaps a record day for Morecambe.

1 An indication of the weather
2 Hotels on the front and a few flags
3 Gardens on the front
4 The Town Hall - a crown of flowers and the Union flag
5 Hope the party gets this far...
6 We're British, we don't mind the rain...
7 These boats didn't make it to the Thames...
8 The street party went all this way along the prom, at least

3 Our neighbour all dressed up with somewhere to go - his auntie organised the party
4 Think this hotel wishes it were by the English Channel
5 Home again - this is our back lane and the back of our house
6 Close up of the floral crown
7 Wild flowers in the old cemetery behind the house
8 Spanish daisies on the garden wall
9 Welsh poppy on the back lane
10 Lilies in the house, I don't normally keep them on the cooker but it was a plain background!

I didn't go out again to check but I believe from various news reports they got a good turnout but didn't break the record. Two villages down south joined by a bridge managed to get a longer one.

Margaret, some of the views are instantly recognisable, but the indiviuality of the snaps and the perspective from which they are taken lends a 'new eye' to them.
Many of the places that Dave visits are very close to where I live....he makes the place look really picturesque.

Although my mum was born and raised in London she knew a lot about wild flowers. Sunday afternoons we would go out in the car and then go for a walk. A favourite spot was what we used to call little York near Rishton. We'd look for wimberries in season and pick wild flowers and mum always knew their names. Lady's smock was one of her favourites.

Looking at your pics, there are lots of dog roses - they're still in tight bud here and the two elder trees in the back lane only have a couple of flowers out. Has Clayton moved nearer the tropics?

Thank you Max. Considering I have not touched it since about this time last year for various reasons it is looking splendid. Obviouly neglect is good for it but I have been out there this weekend doing things here and there. I can't paint but I use colour in my garden as if I were trying to do a painting - that's my theory anyway, mostly it just turns out like that whatever I do.

Looking at your pics, there are lots of dog roses - they're still in tight bud here and the two elder trees in the back lane only have a couple of flowers out. Has Clayton moved nearer the tropics?

Got another for you, I've never noticed it before, it is low to the ground and I was prostrate in a field to get this shot.
My knowledge of wild flowers is sadley lacking, as I spent a lifetime in decorative horticulture.

Was it painful going prostrate?

Obviouly neglect is good for it but I have been out there this weekend doing things here and there. I can't paint but I use colour in my garden as if I were trying to do a painting - that's my theory anyway, mostly it just turns out like that whatever I do.

Do you get a lot of butterflies in your garden with such a variety of flowers?

No I took all my clothes off first, I didn't want mud on my dickey bow tie.

I would say it's water avens, Geum rivale, enter it in google images and you will get some lovely pics.

I see from your profile you used to work for the council, were you in Parks & Gardens or whatever it's called?

Yes - quite a few - saw a small blue one the other day that I hadn't seen before. There is also an old cemetery behind the house, with a lot of wild flowers, which helps with the wildlife.

You are correct I think, it was growing down by Hyndburn Brook in a waterlogged area. I would never have said Geum. It was mixed with the ground elder so couldn't see a leaf. Yes I worked for Parks Dept, then Recreation and Amenities, then Parks and Open Spaces, then Parks and Cemeteries, then Parks and Playing fields. All the same department but it changed with the politics of the council. You put me to shame with your knowledge of wild stuff.
Have to do a family taxi job, will post my pictures when I get back.

Well apart from my mum's knowledge when I was young, I lived in the depths of the country, virtually in the middle of a field, for 18 years till 2000. I learnt quite a lot about wild flowers then.

Its due to the tropical climate we enjoy in Hyndburn, we are mucked up with peacocks, they are a bit of a pest really, and lets not talk about the flocks of parrots

Margaret Pilkington 06-06-2012 10:08

Re: Today in pictures

I don't know, but I have heard them calling when I have been going to Lidl....so there must be at least two of them........and if I remember rightly Less put something on the forum about the noise and the nuisance that cause.

They might be a nuisance, but they are really beautiful.
I went to Leeds castle and I followed the peacocks around trying to get one to display his magnificent tail feathers for me......to no avail. And I go and capture this picture in Accrington......maybe this should be in 'ood a thowt it'.

Probably the one at the bus stop by the Forts, if it's still there ... the bus stop that is, not the Forts. That was one disgusting bog. Worse even than the bogs at Accy Grammar.:D

Hey ... what's happnin'? I really don't know the answer. I'm def. a bottom ender ... but one theory has it that the Load was the dividing line. That describes me to a T.......but I have got to the point in my life where it really doesn't matter that much anymore.......dogs, cats and animals in general don't really care what you look like - they appreciate your kindness.
It is only some humans who measure you by how you look.

Are you sure about the Bottom Club? ... I seem to remember its being on Bayley St., just down from the Village Blacksmith. Was in there a couple of times with Basil Brierly and his lad. I know the Middle Club ... used to go on their annual outing to Blackpool.:D

I remember the Top club opposite the Greyhound. When I was very young we used to go and visit my aged great great uncle who lived in the row of houses joined on to it. We used to wait for the bus outside the club and I remember the bronze bust of Edward VII in the front garden of the club.

Me too Cashy! My Uncle Ted lived at number 14, between the chippy and the greengrocer. He died in 1957 and I remember watching Six Five Special in the greengrocers with the boy who lived there. That prog started Feb 1957 - I was ten at the time.

No, it was Tony. I forget how many kids Basil and his old lady had ... but, they were Catholics;):D Basil was a real character. I remember him and his horse and cart ... and the stuff he had in his junk yard off Lower Barnes St. would be worth a fortune today. I remember that he had a whole bunch of those cast iron fire places ... that would be at the time when folks were tossing those in favour of those little tiled things:mad: A great guy that Basil ... used to buy me the odd pint (good Dutton's ale) in the Village. Sometimes he smelled a little ripe, but that was only when he had been mucking out the pigs he used to keep on his allotment back of our place on Rishton Rd.:D

I always thought that the top end finished at the canal bridge, the middle went down to the Forts and that is where the bottom started.
At Mount Pleasant the school was divided into two houses Enfield which finished at the canal bridge, and Hyndburn which covered all below.
Does anyone remember going on trips with the clubs if your dad was a member usually Southport.

You know, hon, I don't think I would like it now. I believe that I prefer the memories to the realities. Just took a walk thru Mercer Park with Mr. Google ... and those swings:eek: How can the kids of fun on tame things like they have now? In my day (ok., I'm getting a little Old Fartish, I know) they had real things for us to play on. And I still have a scar between my eyes to prove it. And I got my arse tanned for getting hurt;) Some of the things we did (I think I mentioned waxing the slide in another thread) would have the health and safety nazis soiling their gotchies:D

Used to walk those fields all the time ... they still had a stile at the end of Rishton Rd. so that folks wouldn't have to open the gate. In my day, there was still a working farm there ... Ringstonhalgh ... maybe it's still there. There used to be wild blackberries to pick, and the birds nesting was fun ... and there was another danger waiting down by the Stink: an old frayed rope you could swing on out over the toxic waste.
