15. You can see Pendle Hill fron every location.
16. This was as far up as we went, so dont know where it goes.
17. Moo Cows.
18. Pendle again.

I've walked that way a long while since, up the fell to the trig point and back down the same way .(about 8 miles) Very nice walk

Don't think that bridge is Roman, Dave. We visited that area a lot when I was young as my auntie had the post office at Hurst Green. We always called it Cromwell's bridge.

Engineering Timelines - Cromwell's Bridge

You are both correct, I was just repeating what my guide told me. I have just knocked a nail through the end of a 2"x2" piece of wood for when I see him again.

We went up as far as the old house, I think it is something to do with camping, we then hung a left down the lane to the T junction, left again, and eventually back to our start point

No it's just his hobby. Mind you he has a very expensive camera and a massive zoom lens. He has been out with pros to pick up tips. He is waiting to go out with one of Springwatch photographers.

You managed to get out before it rained? It was absolutely chucking it down when we went out so no pics. How far do you normally walk in a day, Dave?

It was doing a bit of rain when we were out, but not enough to put my cap on. or cause any problems. Just looked out of the window, its belting down, so will be out, but I might give the photos a miss if it doesn't ease up.

I am not sure how far we walk,( I do have a pedometer, so might put it on) but we can be out for two hours as an average, apart from Wednesday and Friday both days for shopping, Wed "The Big Shop", and Fri, down town for my tripe and black pudding.

Today in Morecambe the rain is coming down in stair rods and there's a driving wind, so the conditions are ideal NOT for the Olympic torch relay going round Morecambe Bay from Carnforth and then into Lancaster. I could have stayed indoors and watched on the BBC website or the red button on the TV, or even caught a glimpse from the house, but having seen what all those involved were putting up with from the start in Kendal I thought it would be churlish not to support them so off I went.

I didn't think to put my wellies on so 45 minutes and two soaked feet later I am back to report. Glad I went out, there were quite a few folks about, but with cars parked on both sides of the prom it was difficult to get shots without going into the road. And some shots were blurred by rain on the lens, plus camera batteries were running low. Anyway here is what I managed to capture on film.

They paused at the Town Hall which is virtually next to our house but it really was too wet to stick around. Watching now on the BBC website there are lots of people about as the torch makes its way through Morecambe, stopping at the Eric Morecambe statue where the mayor was waiting, then making its way out of town to Lancaster. All in all it was a good show from the town considering the weather, hope Accy has better luck tomorrow.

1 I could have watched from the bedroom window as they went past the gap between the houses on the front
2 Or stood on the loo and got a slightly closer view from the lavatory window
3 But I went out... a bit early - ten minutes or so to go
4 He's not in the torch relay
5 Getting nearer
6 Bus with mascot and previous/future torch bearers
7 A sponsor
8 Another sponsor
9 Nearly there
10 At last - well done that man! Keep going! It was all over so quickly...

Just a year ago I visited the Joseph Heller gardens in Gardone Riviera on Lake Garda. Amazing variety of plants and habitats are recreated -all integrated with sculptures whci have been donated by friends of his - there are a couple of Keth Harings, the totem and the dog plus the sign at the entrance which is an original he produced when he visited the gardens. There is also a Jean Miro sheep! Will have to look out the brochure to name the others:)

What a lovely garden - don't think it appeared in Monty Don's TV series on Italian gardens. The first picture in the second set reminds me of the 16th century Mouth of Hell at Bomarzo

Yes I'm glad I went down to the prom, it was good to feel I was supporting all those who help to keep this whole thing on the road, so to speak.

Well Done Sue for going out and getting the pics...and getting wet in the process.
The
Torch is due round our way tomorrow...but if it is fine we will be out at the crack of Sparrow trump(the sparrows trump at 8am here)..Bury, Bolton or perhaps even Preston....so I doubt very much I will be in the throngs lining Eastgate.

I don't like taking my camera out in the rain anyway.

One day I might be able to post a picture of Morecambe in the sunshine!

My camera is so knackered I don't think about the weather when I take it out. It had a baptism of fire in 2007- I was walking along a pavement in Cork with it hanging from my wrist and held in my hand, didn't notice a large kerb coming up, stepped off it without knowing and fell flat - my hand landed on the camera so I didn't break my wrist but the camera was pretty battered. Still worked though!

Margaret Pilkington 22-06-2012 14:44

Re: Today in pictures

I had a Nikon Camera that was bought for me in Oz...it cost quite a bit(a thousand Aussie Dollars)...I loved that little camera. A few years ago I was getting ready to go away with Ma.....put my camera into its little bag unaware that the clasp was not properly closed...the camera fell out - no more than a 12inch drop and landed on the bedroom carpet. It was damaged beyond economic repair. I did get what was considered a better camera(on my house insurance)...but although the specs were better, I would happily have swopped it for my little Nikon.

I am quite careful with my camera's( I have a few). They bring me many hours of enjoyment. Taking pictures, then looking at them and editing them. So I think I get my moneys worth out of them.

Now, I want one like Davemac has...it seems to take him everywhere:).
I hoped I would get one for my birthday...but(sigh) no luck so far. I might have to do the buying for myself. At least that way I will know I have got what I wanted.

Margaret, forgot to add to last post (the garden gnome disturbed me by bringing a cuppa) that a camera like Dave's is going for £99.95 at Jessops -£150 or more elsewhere. Seems a bargain to me.

Are there floats with the torch like a carnival? I didn't take any pics today as the rain was driving down on me and Max

I see your name is Frank as you put it in a post the other day, hope you don't mind if I call you that, saves me mixing you up with Max! ((had to ask, some people prefer to be known by their user name.)

No, there are no floats as such, think I got pics most of the vehicles that passed:

Police motorcycles
Some official cars and a bus transporting torchbearers
Samsung sponsor vehicle (missed taking a pic of this as the camera had shut down)
Coca Cola vehicle
LLoyds vehicle

The sponsor vehicles had little stages on the back and top and were playing music to jolly people up. Sometimes they give out freebies too I believe. Too wet today!
A big gap after these, then

A big yellow and white support vehicle, followed by the torchbearer in a white tracksuit flanked by several of the torch security team wearing grey shorts and top
A yellow car
Another bus

That's it, over in the blink of an eye. Before all this there is the usual police vehicle toing and froing to try and clear traffic, and there may be more going on in better weather, but no carnival floats today. There are also a few cyclists who I think are doing liaison between the various groups on the road at handover time.

Some of my local pictures are also in The Accrington Group on flickr...and MENMedia use these and showcase them in the newspaper.....so they aren't actually submitted to the paper, but put into a group that the paper can use.

As for the camera......I have my eye on a couple on Fleabay.....next model up to Dave's is £99....and the model above that is £120(both are bargains).......I am cogitating about it...I don't make rash decisions...i will probably decide when someone else buys them from under me.

Great Pics Margaret. I'm not good enough to put mine on flickr yet. I'm still experimenting with my camera. Our son ,Steven posts on flickr . He takes a lot of bird pics www.flickr.com/photos/spguk

Frank, get posting on Flickr - you don't have to be good. It is the enthusiasm that counts.
I have had a look at your son's page and wow, he is impressive.
You have to have something to aim for - and there is room for abilities of all kinds.
Thank you for your kind comments on my pictures. They are appreciated.

Yes, she used to but is now retired - it's my Aunt Diane -we have the same name and surname but she only has one "n"! Causes confusion in the family - in Italy you use your maiden name mostly otherwise I'd be Bertolotti! (There's a clue there to my username!):D

Thought I would take you to Verona today - photos of the Giardino Giusti - a beautiful classical Italianate garden just across the river which takes you up to a terrace with fantastic views of the town -forget Juliet's balcony-you won't see much for the hordes of Japanese tourists and it is quite disappointing anyway! Was there just a year ago with my Aunt and Uncle for the "Prima" (fist night) of Aida, 5 hrs sitting on the stone steps of the Arena the evening before - it was worth it! We got to bed at two and were up and out early to get across town and visit the gardens before going on by train to Lake Garda.
It was a magical morning as in the little red house (features in the photos) the windows were open and a man was playing a baby grand piano accompanying the main characters out of that night's opera -La Traviata - they were practising as we walked around the gardens and it was fantastic!
We walked along the river afterwards back into town.
Have put a couple of pics taken in the Arena at the end.

I worked for the council for a year or two myself, don't think I ever spoke to her, but going in and out of buildings, came across her.

What can I say about the pictures, we don't stand a chance for scenery like that around here, breathtaking.

Part 1. Today in Pictures, another wet sock day, but half way up my trousers as well. Castle clough revisited, under flood conditions.
1. Before we reach the ford.
2. A bit further down
3. Close to the bridge.
4. Quick check before crossing the road.
5. Where the road meets the water.
6. On we go, to the waterfall.
7. Just before we dropped down to water level, you can smell the wet wall, and wet trees.
8. A bit more water than last time.
9. The weeping tree of Perpignoly, apparently if you see the tree weeping you will see your ancestors. This legend goes all the way back to this afternoon, when I made it up.
10. The water from another angle.

Dave you are indomitable.......anyone else would have looked out of the window and told the dog to go and pee in the yard.

Part 2. Today in Pictures, I should have know better.
11. All that silt build up should have told me, go back the way you came.
12. It doesn't look to bad, will go this way.
13. A fallen tree and the footpath washed away. did I take any notice.
14. Stinking heck, another tree down, and in the way.
15. Another one, and no footpath.
16. Looks like I'm paddling.
17. Had to use this as a bridge, I'm getting to old to behave like this.
18. Back to the ford.

Water in my boots, soggy pants, and a very wet dog, why did I enjoy this? Big kid I suppose.

Ah Dave...what has sanity got to do with the pursuit of a good pic...absolutely nothing.
Although I must admit I am getting just a bit more chary about climbing on wet green stones to get a picture of rushing water......did that in Betws-y-coed and nearly filleted my kipper.(thank goodness my camera was alright)

I think that is a good excuse, I am pursuing my art.

Didnt stop my boots filling with water though, as I walked back to the car my boots made a loud squelch every time I put my foot down, and it was pants off as soon as I went through the front door.

I hope that mental picture is not too much.

Its the world famous Castle Clough, I looked for the remains of the castle in a casual sort of way..........zilch.

Its not any tree, its the Weeping tree of Perpignoly.

I didn't want to say I was at the computer in just my Keck's, but I think I just did.

Its a big place, with more than a few trees, the article that you linked to said "it is a two foot high wall between two trees" .
I assumed that it would be on the high ground as a defensive option, and I have trod paths on both sides without a smattering of a small wall, but due to its size it could be under a patch of nettles, or whatever.

If anyone has a location I will return and take a picture for posting on here, and to finish my quest .

Incidentally I followed another link you posted from the English Heritage site, and I think I know the approximate location now. I cant say at this moment, as people will be rushing to the site to dig up the treasure.

What is it with men and water and men and fire?!:D

Heard that you'd had 4 inches of rain in 4 hours -the pics give a good idea of what that means. You were very intrepid Dave - hope you haven't caught a rotten cold with having wet feet, or worse, that it's given you trench foot!

Not sure about the water "thing" because as a child I was very reluctant to get in the tin bath in front of the coal fire.
But now I am drawn to water, either the canal or waterfalls, and yes we had a months rain in 24 hours.
As you can see by the pictures, the Clough I was wading through had lost its footpath completely, and was blocked by fallen trees.

Today we went to the dogs...

Coincidentally Frank after you posted the pics of Max we were off to a dog agility event at the Westmorland showground near Kendal. A friend of ours was there with his young dog Jessie aka Caledonian Flier (Paul's Scottish) who is a small smooth haired collie with very long legs. Never been to anything like this before and it was a lovely day weatherwise. Lots of collies of course but many other kinds of dogs as well. Not many action pics but a few of various pooches.

1 The car park - we must have arrived at a dog show
2 Walking the course
3 Waiting to perform
4 I'm hungry too!
5 One of Dougal's relatives I think
6 Our friend Paul and his dog Jessie having some down time together
7 Clouds over the showground
8 More clouds with garden gnome in rh corner wearing his best hat
9 The sky in this direction looks a bit threatening - perhaps this is for shelter if it rains
10 We did see some action!
