12. It eased up so I ventured out from under the bridge at Church, managed this.

What time did you go out ,Dave. We went up Longridge Fell this morning and it stopped fine for us although I didn't risk taking my camera as it threatened to rain. Great pic of the snail.

It was about 2.15 this afternoon, got to Church Kirk, Church, when It started, I was at the furthest point then, so soggy kecks were a certainty.

I don't have to be sick to opt for a bed bath, but I'm not doing hand stands to save you bending down.

Part 1. Today in Pictures. Along the canal, quick word with Mrs.P. through the park and across Clayton fields.
No landscape shots as I have posted these views before. For most of it I was sat on wet marshland, or on all fours getting close ups. I get my bum wet so you don't have too.

1. Ripening on the canal towpath, brambles
2. Down hygiene, Hebe.
3. Moss and lichens on a tree in Mercer Park.
4. Does my bum look big in this field.
5. Orchids, these used to be a rare site, now I find them a lot more.
6. meadowsweet, growing in a meadow sweetly
7. Orchids in abundance, in a field, clayton fields.
8. Great Burnet.
9. Water Avens seed head.
10. Clover.

Apologies, couldn't help bits of window frame in some of the shots - the attic this time, not the loo!

Just luck that I happened to be looking out the window at the right time. It was actually better a few minutes earlier but there was a camera malfunction and I had to do a bit of tweaking before I could take any pics.

Its not down to knowledge, its searching for the right flower on identification guides.

I actually had a damp posterior and mucky knees (I was in shorts as Mrs. P. will confirm). You cant get closeup shots without getting down with the flora. So I'm braced ready.

Some brilliant pics there Dave.
I would love to be able to take pictures of insects, but if I am honest they scare the britches off me(I'm a wuss and am afraid they might bite me sting me or worse...run up my trouser leg). I don't mind snails, but slugs are repugnant....another 'boy' thing I guess.
I chickened out today.....the tinlids got mini laptops for getting brilliant school reports, so I was loading them with music, pictures, videos, word processor programs and a couple of games.

Great selection today Dave, especially the slugs and snails! Oh... and the woodlouse is my favourite!

I would say that is definitely not sweet cicely, that flowers much earlier and will have set seeds by now. Easy to recognise when you do fiind it (I have it in my garden, cook it with rhubarb as a sweetener instead of adding a lot of sugar). The leaves smell of aniseed when crushed, and the seeds are about an inch long and taste of aniseed - good to chew if you have an upset stomach.

Having said all that, not easy to work out what it is, could be wild carrot, fool's parsley, hedge parsley etc. Withe umbellifers a lot depends on leaf shape, flower bracts etc - things that need a close scrutiny.

I did go through the ident website, but got a bit stir crazy with all the similar plant. gave up as time was moving on, and had to post the pictures. It was one of those "I wish moments" about not taking a picture of the leaves. I did look at those suggested and they didn't quit measure up. back in an hour, got to go out.

My worry is, that although there is the camera between us, my main urge is to drop it and run(that would be disastrous - for the camera)......I'm a hero really, but on the day they built me, they only had cowards legs left :D

Start with ladybirds ans slow moving stuff, and work up to scary stuff. For some reason today snails had moved up walls and were in the crevices, you could start there.

If ladybirds are a problem then I think insect photos are out, unless you stand back and zoom in, but not ideal

Yes, Dave.....I can't get past their unpredictability...that they move fast and fly off.....that is why my insect pics are few and far between.
I have a picture of a dozy bee on some plants in the Isle of white(it was taken from a good distance with all the zoom on)......and those Mayfly...and I think that's it.
I won't be getting up close and personal woth ants, woodlice or any other six legged crawlies. I'll leave that to you. You do it far better that I ever could.

I understand, if you can't, then you can't, I will look on it as my specialist subject, until I am challenged on the creepy crawly front.

So I suppose I have thrown down the gauntlet for other people to lie on the floor and damp grass to take wickies, but lets be careful out there!

Totally agree with you the ceepy crawly front Margaret -am not a fan at all. Helped my son to catch butterflies and dragon flies etc for a full collection which he killed and pinned out himself for agriculture college some years back -would rather see them flying about preferably at a distance, especially things that buzz!

My gran used to clean at a big house on the outskirts of Sheffield (for some posh people)......on their landing upstairs were cases upon cases of pinned moths, butterflies and beetles from all over the world.......I used to go past them as close to the rail as I could, and on my hands and knees. I was proper scared of them...even though they were dead and in glass cases.

I'm surprised you managed to take that pic of your bedroom spider the other day Margaret - didn't realise you and Dianne were such wusses! You'd never make a bee keeper then (we had a few hives in our garden when we lived in the country doing our Good Life thing).

Seriously, it's strange how certain things can get people so worked up isn't it. For my part I love the butterflies and moths and I'll never forget how after I dug my pond in my country garden and had literally just finished filling it with water, as I was sitting there a huge dragonfly turned up from out of nowhere. I like seeing the bugs in the veg garden as well, and the caterpillars. The one thing thing I'm not keen on is worms, never liked them as a child when others were playing with them in the mud.

Yes, I've had my brushes with the insect world, had a horsefly bite on my eyelid once, and earlier this year a lovely set of fleabites on my lower legs even though my cat had been dead for several months! The piece de resistance was in Italy a few years ago, we were camping in our motorhome between a freshwater lagoon and the sea and the campsite was over run with mosquitoes. Actually I escaped unscathed but Richard the silly sod refused to put any insect repellent on and I think he lived to regret it... see attached pic which was taken several days later. Once bitten twice shy I hope.

After all that I wouldn't avoid insects, the vast majority will do you no harm at all and in my view are part of Nature red in tooth and claw... And I'm loving Dave's pics - and Frank's cheeky slug above! or is it a snail...

The spider was taken a few feet away with a good whack of zoom. I can't kill insects.....I just don't like them.(I don't go screaming and running for the nearest male - I suppose my fear, or dislike is controlled in that respect)
I accept that many of them have a job to do....even if that job is only to provde food for friends of the garden.
I couldn't be a bee keeper. I know my limitations.

Good for you Margaret - at least you don't turn into a wilting female - and many people's reactions would be to kill indiscriminately. And don't forget, without insects such as bees we wouldn't have many of our fruit crops etc - so they really do have a job to do.

I haven't ever been that Sue.
I think most of my dislike of insects stems from having five younger brothers.
They once collected hundreds of insects, moths, butterflies Daddy longlegs and the like(we lived in a very rural area and they were easy to come by)...these they released into my attic bedroom....and I had to go up the stairs to my room to switch on the light. Once the light was on all these insects sprang to life.
You can imagine the scene with all these insects flying round my head.....boy did they get a 'leathering' off my dad.

They used to have a small case of pinned moths and butterflies in one of the dining rooms at the Walton Arms - I couldn't go into the room! I have a total phobia about moths and go into a major panic if one is in the house - I can't bear to even look at photos or drawings of them. I'm also of the same mind but not as bad about all flying things including birds, and I can't bear bluebottles. If I sit outside in the sun I have to have a can of fly spray handy! Perhaps I have 'issues'!

I suppose looking back it was quite funny...the lads certainly thought so...they were watching as I switched the lights on...I don't think they found it quite so funny when Dad was paddling their back sides with a slipper.

Glad to hear someone finds my present home town worth visiting... and yes it has been a lovely day here. Shame I had to spend half of it in Preston!

I did in 2010, it was the only place that had a tackle shop selling the "Preston X6 seat box" & he only charged me 300 quid instead of 350, so I'm not so averse to the place. :)

Mind you, it was a proper nightmare trying to get out again & back to Liverpool.

I guess you're talking about the road through to Lancaster and the M6. That's the main reason we chose to live in Morecambe rather than Lancaster - my other half works at the power station in Heysham and now he only has to drive a few miles along the sea front rather than through from Lancaster.

BTW was the tackle shop a little place next to a Spar shop just off the northern end of the prom? If so it's just round the corner from our house!

My one and only visit to Formby was a couple of hours in 2008 during a week's holiday in Southport, shortly after we moved to Morecambe. We spent more time at Crosby admiring the statues on the beach and most of the holiday we spent in Liverpool as my other half, being a southerner, had not been there before. I spent quite a lot of time in the city when I was a student in Preston way back in the Middle Ages.

Can't really remember, as my observer (Marion) wasn't ! So I had to try & drive - locate - assess parking all at once. It's was Gerrys on Parliament st off Regent rd. And to keep the old baggage happy we did the touristy bit too, round the market, along the Beach with an Ice cream & some retail therapy (Couldn't really say no when I'd just given out 300 notes on Fishing gear now could I). :)

Anyways, while I'm on this thread & talking about that somewhat tarnished jewel that is Morecambe, some piccys. :)

Cormorant figure on prom - Beach looking South - Witchy one, looking for ingredients from the bumper book of spells - Roundabout & figures - Close up of the figures.

Used to take ours (Hounds) out that way when I lived in England, also down to Delamere Forest. Not been there for over 27 years or so, so I couldn't say whether or not you can still let the Hound have free reign, but it was allowed way back when & the Muttleys enjoyed it. :)

Today in Pictures is a very short posting today, due to shopping.

1. Started the short walk and it started with a barge.
2. The next three shots are of the same insect, which was all along the canal towpath on the wall side.
3. they were on Thistles and Nettles when I saw them.
4. And it is Grypocoris Stysi, the Mirid Bug, I bet that impressed your socks off. Dont be, I looked it up.

At the time I didn't have my reading glasses with me, so wasn't sure just what they were, I thought initially they were spiders, bit of a shock when I got them on the computer.

I just love that Tigger - reminds me of a cat we had years ago - his back legs were so fluffy, from the back it looked like he was wearing furry plus fours or jodhpurs!
