Yes, I know Sue...and I have got better with a little exposure to some bugs.......as long as I have the zoom on and I don't have to get too close...but they are ugly.....ugly, but fascinating too.

Awww...I like those.
I sat in a park on the Isle of White and watched the red squirrels playing.....but as soon as I got my camera out, they disappeared up into the topmost branches of the trees...it was almost like they were teasing me.
I never got one useable picture.

I like your pics...but I don't like that shield bug....and a trip to the site that I have posted gave me the heebies.

Thats a useful site, its gone into my favourites. I have been able to locate the specific bug on there, Its the Red Legged Shieldbug.
I thought the Mayfly more creepy crawlie due to its long "things" on its bum, I saw something like that on Matrix.

It took the week-end putting out nuts (in the foreground) lying nearby on the grass where they came in under the fence & all to convince the little ratbags I wasn't a threat & enable me to get a few halfway decent pics. :)

Its a syrup seam here, they found it when the brickworks closed.

What you can see on bob is, first he went in the Hyndburn brook up to his plimpsole line, then we came back up a very dusty path, the dust then stuck to his wet bits and there were a lot of those. The end result is the same, but it wasn't wet dirt it was dry dirt. Although he still required a hosing down at home

Glad folks liked my pics of Iceland yesterday. Here's some more of that amazing landscape.

1 The Gullfoss waterfall disappearing
2 It ends up down here in this crack in the rocks
3 The rock face at the side of the chasm
4 Close up of the water as it disappears
5 The water does a 90degree turn to end up in the river below
6 Moving on to Thingvellir, the site of the original outdoor Icelandic parliament a thousand years ago. The rock outcrops provided good acoustics for the reading out of the laws. This is a place where two tectonic plates are pulling the Earth's surface aprt.
7 Close up of rock formation at Thingvellir
8 View across the area, the lines of rocks are where the plates are separating and creating new land in between
9 River and lake at Thingvellir
10 Patterns made in molten rock as it cools

We appear to be living in the middle of a building site -danger at every turn with heavy machinery and vehicles thundering through and men on all the roofs! They are making progress as you will see.

Another large consignment of solar panels today -on the photo of the boxes you can just make out "Made in China" -surely a German investor should be buying European goods! Have found out that we have rented this investor our roof space for something like a cool 400K Euros upfront - that's for 20 years. Plus the farm will be getting it's electricity supply free...that's what is coming over on the jungle drums here:D

Final photo -business as usual on the farm - a newborn calf.

It was actually quite a hot day when we were there - mid August but I think the lack of much vegetation gives the impression of a cool climate. That view with the church is very pretty but not that typical of the landscape! Actually Iceland is not quite in the Arctic Circle so its climate is not that harsh, especially with all the geothermal activity.

The thermal activity would not affect the climate. The population live near to the coast where it would be warmer but once you get inland it can be very harsh.

Today in Pictures, is a walk done many times before, so no landscape shots, just the opposite.

1. Green-veined butterfly, although it does look a little blue to me!
2. Spider protecting her young.
3. Still protecting her young, from me.
4. Small Skipper butterfly.
5. Same Small Skipper.
6.Rush hour at Fosters Swing Bridge.
7. Fuchsia in St Mary's Burial Ground.
8. Ladybird on a Thistle, with a collection of smaller wickthings lower down.

Nice photos posted from others from around the world.

Some pictures today taken from the upstairs windows of our house over the last two or three days, playing with the zoom in some of them.

1 Cauliflower clouds over Morecambe bay
2 There's a bird in that tree...
3 Yes there is...
4 It's spreading its wings
5 Long shot over the garden and the plum tree to the cemetery gate in the lane behind, from second-floor window
6 Close up at last, with digital zoom
7 Bird, Photoscaped
8 And again
9 Spot the neighbour's cat, no her name is Seren (she had a sister called Dipity) asleep on our shed roof
10 Seren zoomed in

I can see you are playing with the textures, sometimes it just changes the picture into something else.

Didn't set out for wickthings, but as it was a walk I have done many times and posted them, there was nothing different view wise, so looked down, or accross in some cases.

I was tempted to buy a macro lens myself but don't take any close up of tiny things so I didn't think it worth it.

Today in Pictures, not a notable selection, but it is my day none the less.

1. Rain on a Rose Bay Willow herb flower.
2. Golden Rod, the reason I am looking up at this, is as I walked towards it to take a picture, the ditch in front of it was covered by weeds, and I didn't see it.
3. Bulrush growing in a wet bit.
4. There is a sale on at the shoe tree.
5. You don't see this all that much on the canal, Hemp Agrimony.
6. My weekend retreat, I was working in the lab late one night.......
7. Fosters Swing Bridge, now heading home, me, not the bridge.
8. Himalayan Balsam seed heads, ready to boing.
9. And finally, I think its a bath today.

The macro option is built into the camera, I just choose the option in auto mode, and then get on my hands and knees, thats the hard bit.

I use a fujifilm finepix F500exr, I chose that, as the first option for my camera was it must fit into my top pocket.

FinePix F550EXR | Fujifilm Global this is the same as mine, the only difference is this one has GPS, not an option I wanted.

One or two more pics playing with the zoom out of the upstairs window. Not got a very steady hand at the moment but I'll keep trying.

The statue is in the cemetery behind the house, two dead elm tree trunks were turned into a fisherman and a shrimp woman by a champion chain saw carver a couple of years ago.

The roofscape is the back of buildings on the prom, on the other side of the yacht club pound and car park which features often in my photos taken from the house. The iron pinnacle is taken with max optical and digital zoom.

Re: Today in pictures

Thanks Dave, I have looked your camera up, it seems to have a decent spec, it certainly takes good photos.
I had a Fujifilm 9500 but it was much bigger than yours and wouldn't fit in my pocket.
I sold it to a mate when I bought the Nikon DSLR, that's even bigger with the interchangeable lenses and needs a camera bag to cart it around.
I also had a Fujifilm compact, not as good as yours but still a decent camera but it didn't have a veiwfinder and I can't do with quinting at the screen, especially if the sun is behind me.
I hadn't bothered with it for a while so I sold it to another mate far too cheaply.

I have priced a macro lens on Amazon for my Nikon and they are upwards of £350, I will leave the macro shots to you Dave, otherwise my wife would imprint my head on the back of a the frying pan.

Don't know if you've seen some of the posts on here where I was talking recently about upgrading my compact camera - I had an old Fujifilm compact with optical viewfinder but not much zoom. The problem is that hardly any of the compacts about now have the optical viewfinder and like you I don't like the screen.

But I have settled for an Olympus with 10x optical zoom and am having to get used to using the screen. It's a nice little camera, very easy to use and good enough for me, I'm not into bells and whistles. I did look at one like Dave's - and Marg P has got one as well... but didn't like the pop up flash and that angled knob on the top RHS. Each to his (her) own!

Its horses for courses really, I probably wouldn't post as many photos as I do if it had to be carried in a bag.
A viewfinder would not work for me especially in macro mode, a viewfinder would look past the subject, and you would have to fiddle with offset correction. My shots close up, are at ground level a lot of the time and looking through a viewfinder would not be possible, also my head would be in contact with the camera and the camera is an inch away from the subject. With a screen the camera can be at arms length, and I can still centre the subject. As I said though, its what works for you.

As Susie said though the flash pops up on turn on, but it can be pushed in if you wish to disable the flash.

I have not walked around the building before, but found a path that saved me climbing over barbed wire, so couldn't resist a mooch.

I had not come across the Hemp Agrimony before on the canal, so had to look it up, no butterflies though, perhaps as it opens fully

A selection from a walk round the farm this morning - showing some of the architecture of the old farm ( built 1700's) there are an amazing number of arches -must have taken some building.

There's a photo of one of our Border Collies for Max -she is grey and white with pale blue eyes, she's called Chicca(pronounced Keeka!) -is this a pecularity or is a part of the breed like this -her mother is identical.

The first solar panels went on this morning and I took a few other shots of interest including an old grape vine and some grapes (love the shadows on the photo of the grapes, wonderful leaf shape!), an old bell and finally our two cute donkeys for DiG!!:D

A nice range of pics today Dianne! that first one looks more like a monastery than a farm!

Your collie is known as a merle, that's the term for that sort of coat colour, it's a genetic thing, can be blue, red or other colours I think and it affects eye colour as well.

Merle (dog coat) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I first came across one a few years ago up here, it was a red one, very unusual, and I don't know if you remember me posting pics from dog agility trials a few weeks ago, there were quite a few there. I think they are becoming more popular.

Here's a pic from the dog trials of a red merle collie.

Thanks for that Sue -so Chicca is a blue merle! (Nicer than the red one I think) She is a lovely sweet dog and very friendly. Doesn't seem to be deaf either which I read is frequently a problem for these kinds of dogs.

The first solar panels went on this morning and I took a few other shots of interest including an old grape vine and some grapes (love the shadows on the photo of the grapes, wonderful leaf shape!), an old bell and finally our two cute donkeys for DiG!!:D

Some very photogenic structures there, you must give us more

The very same Dave, they invite viewers to send in their pics, they're put up for the public to choose the best 12 & they turn them into a Calender. These are then printed & sold with money going to good causes. Think there were some other bits to the prize winners as well but can't quite remember.

I wouldnt know the difference, but now I know I will pay more attention to markings, its just that its back end kept going in the water and sort of gave the impression it was laying eggs. That way it gave me a moment to snap it.

I think I agree with that, and the standard is very high. I do it for fun, if it got too serious it would spoil it for me. I probably would as kestrelx says, put one in just for the hell of it.

It's worth bearing it in mind as you go about, perhaps seeing shots that could be used for it. Also you can put in 3 photos to the competition.

You may have already seen this, the rules for 2012. You can put in up to four photos. They don't mention categories but last year there were twelve, and presumably the BBC and/or the judges decide which photo goes in which category - twelve as they are going to make a calendar from the winners.

Just re-read this year's rules and there is only one category, or theme - Walk on the Wild Side. Would have suited Davemac very well!

That is the weather we come to accept in Scotland, even in April, two days after it was almost gone and the sun shone warmly.
No fun when the drive is blocked though and we had to get the farmer next door to hack away at the tree with his chain saw.

The tree is on the lawn of Lord and Lady Vaux's mansion, they own the cottage we rent in their grounds.

7. All this was part of the quarry.
8. Looking back down the direction we just came up.
9. Part of the stream close to the road.

Jen having seen yours not sure I want to post my sunset pictures - we're supposed to get spectacular ones in Morecambe but can't see the actual sun from our house cos of the buildings along the prom. Anyway today's the first time I've seen one for ages so caught the tail end of it using the sunset setting on my new camera - not wonderful really. The first pic is through the famous loo window...

Yes you defo took yours earlier than I did - I didn't look out the window till it was nearly too late - was rushing from window to window trying to find the colours before they faded! And we're definitely on the flat here... :)

A selection taken this morning round the farm again -following up the arches theme in the architecture of the old farm.
1 New roofing
2 Original old milking barm (finished 1760 note old terracotta tiles on the floor)
3 Under the arches -surprising what you can find!
4 Old tackle!
5 The Stables (Original cobbled floor and beams)
6 The courtyard looking towards my house
7 More arches - the pile of wood in the background is what came out during the re-roofing on the opposite side of the courtyard.
8 Original roofing - contrast with photo 1 - the old tiles drop through sometimes, very dangerous!
9 Entrance to the farm
10 Courtyard looking towards the owners house.

Lovely - presume that tree with pink flowers is the Lagerstroemia you showed us recently? When I showed Richard the picture of the arched roof you posted earlier he asked me if it was Roman!

Have been looking at Castelverde on Google satellite and an educated guess tells me that your farm is on the Via Enrico Fermi/Via Livrasco - I know you have mentioned Livrasco in the past. Interesting that there are all those fields and not a single animal to be seen - not even your donkeys! I couldn't work out where the castle is even though I know what it looks like...

Ha ha I wondered if anyone would pick up on that! They are shells, probably very large barnacles, left behind there by the previous owner... don't think they came from Morecambe beach, more likely the shell shop on the prom! I have added to the collection of seaside related things on the windowsill and if we ever get round to decorating the room I have loads of old prints of crabs etc from an old book of anatomical drawings of sea creatures. Plenty of wall space - the room's only about 3 feet square but ten feet high!

So as I have nothing else to post today, my day in pictures is - my loo windowsill! and the things on it

1, 2, 3, 4 The big barnacles
5 Picture of yachts through a window by Matisse - my view from that window is yachts in the yacht club pound
6 Glass shrimps and a toy ship
7 Shells and souvenir china from Morecambe
8 Shrimp up close
9 Magnetic lobster on the mirror bracket

I love the barnacles (now I know what they are!) -could they be used as tea-light holders or perhaps for flower arrangements?

We are on Via Livrasco - great detective work! Yes , it is the Lagerstroemia -there are about 6 of them in front of the houses.

Not many animals in the fields -we have a few on the green spaces around inside the farm but it's very unusual here to see them out. Reason : extreme pressure for land -it's very intensively cultivated and mostly used for maize in this area and some hay. A lot of building is going on in Italy too (so much for the recession!) which has pushed land prices through the roof therefore it is not economically viable to have livestock out on grass!

The Castle is at Cascina Breda dei Bugni - outside the village between Castleverde and Cremona (less than 1 km I think) it could be called Via Breda but i'm not 100% sure.

Have been trying some seppia effects on some of my shots round the farm -very effective -makes it looks like they could have been taken 100 yrs ago! Will post some tomorrow...:hothothot

I retired from my job at 60 and a friend in Read who owned Dunkirk farm knew I was a good with mechanical things and a good machine man, more or less talked me in to tractor driving, I spent the next 10 or 11 years on the farm by the Calder and gave it up about 3 years ago.

Gremlin, glad I made your day! Sounds like you enjoyed it and I imagine it can be quite satisfying, working on the land like that. We used to live in a cottage on the edge of a big estate in Wiltshire, surrounded by fields, and the only traffic past our front door was tractors most of the time.

Funnily enough today we were driving from Morecambe into Lancaster and came across a sponsored tractor drive from John O'Groats to Land's End - with a woman at the wheel!

Best bit was listening to the traffic reports in the heated cab on a frosty morning, I would hear reports of miles of tail backs on the motorways and roads blocked by bits of frost and all I could see were the herons on the fence post and other wild life. There were two families of deer which would stand still near there edge of the next field watching as I past. I always made sure not to cover them in slurry.

I wish I had took the offer of a job years earlier and get away from the rat race.

There were two families of deer which would stand still near there edge of the next field watching as I past. I always made sure not to cover them in slurry.

I wish I had took the offer of a job years earlier and get away from the rat race.

Sounds like a great job.

Nothing from me today, been a bit helter skelter of a day, but have just spent 30 minutes looking, and re-looking at all the pictures posted yesterday and today, and the stories that went with them, very enjoyable, and so variable, thanks everybody.

The Castle is at Cascina Breda dei Bugni - outside the village between Castleverde and Cremona (less than 1 km I think) it could be called Via Breda but i'm not 100% sure.

Yep discovered the castle once I knew where to look...

You couldn't get tea lights in the barnacles, the holes at the top are too small - I suppose you could take the bottom out and just use them as a cover over the flame. They would look nice with flowers in though.

Could just see you in that little two wheeled trap pulled by one of your donkeys!
