So I might get my piece of amber then?

A few years ago Richard and I were at Sidmouth folk festival and sat down on a large tree stump to eat our lunch. We ended up sticking to everything else for the rest of the day and the resin never did wash out of my trousers properly.

Whilst I was in Brighton I stopped at a cafe on the beach. I bought a cheese&bacon toastie and a cappuccino. I was carrying my tray and the biggest bee I have ever seen was hovering over my tray. Me & Bees are not friends. I tried to get away and it was having none of it. I jerked a little and my cappuccino went everywhere. Everbody at the cafe went about their day and the staff didn't speak English; I never got a replacement. I dumped my tray and took my plate onto the beach and sat down.

The pebbles seemed to be grinning at me and my misfortune. Hmm. I placed my plate on the pebbles and with cheese and ham toastie part in hand and part in mouth; I glanced again at the pebbles. They certainly was be grinning at me (check the pic)

when I took the photo the resin had the consistency of a half sucked wine gum, and was still being exuded, you couldn't wear it like this, as the flies would stick to it.

Looks like a nice day around the college.

Didn't know that, thanks-it's a really good walk -especially on a day like the one we had in April - sunny but not too hot. Stopped for a nice lunch half-way at The Shireburn Arms in Hurst Green too! Tea later in Mitton at the Three Fishes like to visit my favourite old haunts when i'm over and you have to keep your strength up for walking!;)

He used to visit Stonyhurst , and from there he would walk down to the river. Its walk have done for years, but as a walk its got more popular with the Tolkien connection.

As for middle earth, that could be anywhere really, Tolkien travelled a lot. It may only have existed of course in Tolkiens mind.

I do like Tolkein - not always easy reading but an incredibly fertile mind.

Didn't realise the old bridge was called Cromwell's bridge, sat on it once for a picnic with my friend Jacqui when we were walking over to Stonyhurst from Gt Harwood (Edge End) to see our boyfriends!

No he is a different Bull. There are a lot of Cattle farms where we were staying in Dumfries and Galloway. We syaed in a cottage in Girthon and a farm about 200 yards from us up the track has diversified and converted a lot of his farm buildings to holiday lets. We went to have a look last week and they are done tastefully as it is still a working beef farm.

Great people up that way -a few years back I spent 4 days as interpreter and guide for a group of 20 farmers from there visiting farms etc over here. Very boisterous lot (all men!) took some handling and they liked a drink...we had a great time and I got paid!

Sorry... I'm not a coffee drinker but I know you are esp now that alcohol is a no-no:(

Just don't think of cappuccino as a "real" coffee - it's all the frothy stuff and chocolate sprinkles etc. If I do have coffee it's an espresso the smaller and stronger the better! I like the caffeine high but couldn't cope with it more than once in a blue moon - don't need it just now anyway as the drugs I'm on send me up to the ceiling!

Today I'm posting towers from Ravenna in Italy. This city was the second most important city in the Byzantine world in the 5th and 6th centuries and still has many churches from that period, with stunning mosaics. many of the churches acquired bell towers (campaniles) in the 9th to 11th centuries

The ancient churches of Ravenna

1 -3 Basilica of San Giovanni Evangelista
4 & 5 San Apollinare Nuovo. This has some of the best mosaics
6 Base of the tower in 4
7 & 8 Santa Maria Maggiore
9 San Giovanni Battista, with a rather incongruous later Baroque facade

I always thought there was a connection between Tolkien's son and Stonyhurst. I thought he was student there, but it would seem he taught at the college. Stonyhurst also claim that Tolkien himself wrote part of Lord of the rings at the college.

When I look at these pictures I am so envious!
Wish I could teleport myself to some of these places...with my camera of course. Not that i think I could better these shots of yours...but just so they could be MY shots.
I don't quite know if that makes sense to anyone other than me.

that would infringe the copyright if you posted them on here....and it wouldn't do for me...for the reasons I have stated in a previous post.
I take pictures even if they look a bit dark...you can sometimes retrieve them with a good editing tool.
The digital camera's of today usually have a setting for low light, but sometimes they just don't do what they are supposed to...or at least no to the level the manufacturers tell you they do.

Di think yourself lucky I didn't have a camera with me when we went to Venice otherwise I'd be boring everyone rigid with my pics! It has to be one of my favourite places ever.

Margaret's twisted my arm so I am going to post some of the mosaic pics - they're not wonderful but I've tweaked them to best advantage on photoscape. I think one of the reasons I didn't get good pics is that the mosaics are high up and there was not much zoom on the camera I was using.

1-5 are in San Apollinare Nuovo. The mosaics run in bands along the top of the walls and are quite easy to see if you crane your neck like Richard is doing.

6-10 are in the basilica of San Vitale. This has a much more complicated architecture - it's octagonal in shape with a dome and is very high as shown on one of the pics. The mosaics are very difficult to get in shot and one of these pics doesn't have mosaics - it's just there to show the architecture with the lovely double headed Byzantine columns like two cushions one on top of the other.

Bear in mind that all this dates from the sixth century.

Very beautiful Sue -and hard to capture. Amazing colours and architecture. Have you tried chopping them a bit to maximise the mosaics?

As to Venice it's one of those places that people either love or hate -no middle ground as far as I can tell from what different people have told me.

Thank you both, glad you liked them, they turned out better than I expected and no I haven't played about with them any more.

No plans to go back Margaret, we very rarely revisit places, there are too many new ones to see... Though I do have a suitcase just about big enough for a body but that only goes on cruises with me. Or you could sit in the shower in our camper van...

Di we went to Venice in March when there was still snow on the ground at the Lido. Not sure I would have been so enamoured in the height of summer but maybe the buildings and atmosphere might even conquer the effect of hordes of tourists. You could almost do a day trip from Garda, just to dip your toe in the water, so to speak...

Thanks Russell, that is the best photo of the Yacht Club I have ever seen - I usually take it from the other side so you don't get that fantastic background. And you were only a few yards from our house!

When you said you were going to Pine Lakes I hadn't connected the name with that place near Carnforth! Hope you and June had a lovely break and she wasn't too exhausted by it.

Thanks for the compliment Susie, the Yacht club photo was taken from the side of the Midland Hotel with a 300mm lens.
Yes June was exhausted but we took our time and she went back to the lodge to sleep for a while in the afternoon. The little mobo scooter makes life easier, the best thing i ever bought her.
Pine lakes is a lovely place, very peaceful and the lodges are much bigger than I expected.

I took loads of photos all around the area. The trouble is that I have to downsize the photos and it takes time so I only do a few for the forum. I suppose I should set the resolution a bit lower. Apart from that I never do any manipulating of my photos, they are straight from the card.

My last two for todays quota.
The Lodge and the night view.

Dianne you suggested I play around with the mosaic shots and having done so only one came out well - the others are either too blurred or shot at funny angles to make good closeups. Here it is together with a few more tower shots.

1 The mosaic closeup -Three wise men and the star (note their names are picked out above), 6th century in San Apollinare Nuovo. Thought this might make a good Christmas card... Love their fancy leggings - and they are wearing Phrygian caps, symbol of freedom and liberty, adopted also during the French Revolution
2 - 4 Torre Civico (town tower in Ravenna) still standing - just.
This visibly leaning tower is the sole survivor of many mediaeval towers that once dotted the city of Ravenna. It was built in the 12th century, when prominent families raced to build such towers to assert their power and dominance all over central Italy. The towers of Ravenna were deliberately destroyed in the 13th century when the city came under papal rule, as a way to exert control over the city. Only la Torre Civica was spared because it had been taken over by the local government of Ravenna. The tower rises 39 metres and is reinforced with steel in order to prevent it from collapsing.
Fun Things To Do in Ravenna - Attractions & Must See - VirtualTourist
5 San Marino, Palazzo Pubblico -town hall and government building
6 Tower of 5, seen above the rooftops
7 Urbino, Ducal Palace
8 Close up of above
9 Torre del Mangia, Siena at dusk. The name, (meaning "Tower of the Eater") derives from its first guardian, Giovanni di Balduccio, nicknamed Mangiaguadagni for his tendency to spend all his money on food. Built in 1338-1348, it is located in the Piazza del Campo, adjacent to the Palazzo Pubblica. When built it was one of the tallest secular towers in medieval Italy. At 88 m, it is now second only to Cremona's Torrazzo - Dianne, over to you!
10 San Gimignano - the medieval Manhattan - this is where most tourists go to see towers but we couldn't get closer than 2km in our motorhome, even to park so we didn't bother. Same in Assisi, but other paces such as Loreto (pilgrimage centre), Pienza (Renaissance gem) and San Marino, were positively welcoming. Could do a whole post of pics of our van parked in various Italian towns!

Today in Pictures, a wet slippy muddy day, up to 5 arches and back down the other side, I fell over twice in the mud. The things I go through, at my age.

1. The start point, the last bit of the Ashton Frost Engine.
2. On the way up a view across the Clough, its going brown now.
3. What was once 5 arches, there is a large amount of water today.
4. I just cant stop myself, I used to go to school with her.
5. Shoe mill on a wet day.
6. Another look across the clough on the way back down.
7.This is what's called an Oak Apple, its actualy the Gall wasp injecting the Oak bud with an egg, and the tree forms this gall as protection.
8. Bath night again.
9. I know, another one, this time I'm up a tree, and one of my "fall over" points.
10.Almost out of the clough, this is behind the area that was once Highams bleach works.

Yes - he gives a good scale to the Urbino pic. Panama is better than the back of his bald head in the previous Ravenna shots!

Am investigating the Christmas card angle - have done it before with one of my Greenland shots.

Yes I did didn't I... remember saying someone's pic ought to be on the front of a calendar - but can't remember who or what!

Getting it made wouldn't be a problem but there are other issues - finance, distribution, numbers, subject - Accy, wildlife, people & places...???

Some things to mull over, probably a bit late for this year (I mean 2013) but could be thought about for next.

The number of widgets on that picture is impressive, it must have taken ages to put in and light all the candles, also all the stairs to climb as well

OK today the last of my towers (do I hear a sigh of relief all round?). very touristy today, sorry...

2 Campanile (bell tower) of the Duomo (cathedral), Florence. Completed 1359, decorated with polychrome marble panels
3 You can go up the campanile but we went up the dome of the Duomo next door, which is slightly higher. This is the view from up there

Well Dave I have studied the original photo and enlarged it but I cannot see the face without body behind the patio doors.

Can you crop it and just show the piece you mean?

Could it be the ghost of one of the workmen who died when the place was a gravel pit. Certainly not, ghosts don't exist in my mind.

Well I still can't make it out, must be his vivid imagination.
There is an ornament on a shelf half way up close to the left side edge. Could it be the reflection of a seagull of bird? I give up.

I am hoping to go there again soon so I will have a real good look around.

You are welcome to one of my allocation, take two if you want.

Look at the first picture you posted in post 2451. There is a lamp post with a few rocks behind it on the edge of the path, then the lake. Now look at the close up pic I posted. You can see the reflection of the bottom of the lamp post, then next to it is a round shape on the right. That is one of the rocks which Dave is interpreting as the top of a head, and below it on the grass is a vaguer round shape makig up the bottom of the head. The "eyes" are a whitish splodge on the bottom LH of the rock where it meets the grass.

Gosh I must have a lot of time on my hands to work all this out! At least there's no ghost (not that I believe in them...)

Right, I will believe you all, it must be the Stella Artois which is affecting my eye sight tonight.

Let's see if you can find anything unusual in the next batch of photos I took last week.

The first four or my kind of photos, mechanical muck.
Next a picture taken at Grange over Sands (more like grass) taken from a distance.
then another shot from the Lodge, a nosy and noisy duck thing which kept tapping on the patio doors, once my wife fed it it brought all it's mates.
Finally the last bit of sunset, I will leave it at eight cos I allowed Susie to have two of mine.

I know I am harping on about the face, but I dont think you are seeing the same face that I am seeing, the eyes are actualy blue and the right eye (as you look at it) is just below the left hand corner of the table top seen in the patio window. The rock and grass dont form part of the picture I can see, if you look at it again you have to tell me if I should go into my darkened room for a while.

Russell you could have had another one, I didn't post any more! We were at Grange the other week, it's a shame how the beach has all trned to grss because the river changed its channel, but it's a nice photo of the Promenade.

Think your "nosy and noisy duck thing" is a Canada Goose, sounds like typical behaviour for that species, pity Kestrel's not here to put us straight!

5. Looking across to Pendle Hill the clouds had moved over.

I've taken up Gremlin's last picture allocation and tried to delineate the two faces without obliterating them too much. The yellow dots are the one dave saw and the orange dots (which don't go into the other face cos I didn't want to spoil it) are the head I saw, lower down.

You can have the rest of my allocation (4) as you have found the face

Well think I have cracked it this time... Look again at pic 1 in post 2451. The two blue eyes are reflections in a puddle in the path, surrounded by a round shape which is the shadow of the top of the lamp post, if you look there is a stalk coming out of the bottom of the round shape which leads back to the bottom of the lamp post, with a bend in it where it hits the flagstone round the base of the lamp post.

And I thought I had better things to do tonight!

Yeah I love that picture - don't think there any candle widgets on that tower though! Took a lot of puff to get me up that dome but it was worth it - I could do two days worth of posts of the views from up there... maybe one day when I run out of pics...

Your shots today - I love the raindrops - and the furry fungus - and I took lots of shots of ivy flowers on the canal in Lancaster yesterday!

You are right there are three faces superimposed over each other, could we have found the ghosts of the Beverly Sisters?

I did check for widgets, but today you posted widget free. You made the right choice of towers to ascend, the tower in view is impressive as its a downward view, not often seen that way.
You must have an impressive back catalogue, something I don't have, when shooting with film it was to expensive to play with shots, so tended to take more family snaps, and I gave most of those away as well.
Now though, I have turned into a photo monster, and a bit weird, although I might have been weird before, but now I have a reason.
