- Woody Nightshade

I should have known that, as I posted the flowers of the very same woody nightshade earlier on, I was just typing without really thinking about it.

As for the butterfly, I haven't seen any so far this year and today I came across three, all flying in a buttery fashion, and not wanting to sit down.

I have added that site as one of my favourites, it all adds to the collective knowledge

It was every ware, today we walked through the woods from Bell Lane end walked towards Wilson's Playing Field. It had recently been used for a cross country run and it was as muddy as a very muddy thing in a big muddy field, with extra mud.

The hose pipe didn't get close, so it was a carry upstairs and straight in the bath, the water went instantly black, there was sticky Willie seed heads floating on the water from his coat, grit, other stuff I had no idea about. I know how to have fun me!.

Ha ha I went to the hosp today for chemo session (yes blood levels more than OK this week) and discovered sticky willy seeds all over my top when I got there! Must have brushed up against them when getting into the car. Had to ask before putting them in the waste bin on the nurse's trolley just in case she wondered what they were!

PS have you thought about a power washer for Bob?

Tongue in cheek of course - we have one and it's taken a fair amount of muck off our garden walls, paint and concrete as well as moss etc...

Then again I might have been suggesting a part exchange for the dog...

I did try the local car wash, but he kept jumping off the car when the brushes started up.
I hope you didn't say to the nurse you had sticky willie seeds all over your top, they just wouldn't understand.

Max has his own personal outdoor shower. We have a tap just inside the garage fed from a mixer valve ( not too hot, not too cold) with a short length of garden hose on it and a shower head.

If I get mine dropped off by parcel force, any chance you could return him all buffed and fluffed.

Today's subject is windows, taken on a trip to Sheffield and the Peak District. I had my first job at Sheffield University in 1972, had only been back briefly till this visit in 2008. Still basically the same city in a lovely setting but now with a metro which I travelled from end to end on my bus pass!

Couple of doors in here too.

1 I used to have a flat on the upper floor of this building in 1972. Originally the local police station, it became a dentist's. The surgeries were downstairs in the old cells with tunnel vaulted brick ceilings and heavy barred doors! I think the words "Police Station" have been chiselled out above the doorcase.
2 Side door of the building above
3 Pub near the university. I spent a lot of time in here! The elaborate roof at top left is on the old church next door which is now the university's Drama Studio
4 University building
5 Indian restaurant, Glossop road. In my day this was a lovely old fashioned grocer, Mr Pollard's, where you could buy loose tea and other goodies
6 Park House flats, a landmark on the hill behind the railway station, hailed as revolutionary when opened in 1961 and listed grade II* in 1998. The largest listed building in Europe. Undergoing renovation which is why you can see right through parts of it.
7 Hyde Park flats, taken from the Metro train. Another very large block of flats
8 Wetherspoons, Hillsborough - used to be a swimming baths
9 House at Bradfield, in the Peak District near Sheffield

Thanks, it is a pretty picture isn't it? Don't think they use that gate, I think there is a way to the door from the parking area/back yard which is on the LHS out of shot.

I see you have posted a pic of the cemetery chapel just off Bolingbroke Grove if I'm not mistaken. Is that your local area? I used to live just off Nightingale Lane in the mid seventies, just about the time you were doing your punk thing in Accy! Worked for a housing association in Balham and we had lots of properties in the Battersea/Wandsworth area.

Oh yes it was my local - I lived near the Clapham Common end of Endlesham Road and the pub was on the next corner. Happy Days!

Had to check up on that photo on Google images but I noticed you had put Wandsworth in the title!

Some more windows and doors today and a few pics which while loosely related to the theme were prompted by a BBC news article.

1 Beamish brewery, Cork
2 Christian Brothers school for poor children, Sullivan's Quay on the River Lee, Cork
3 Georgian window, Cork
4 Windows and doors, old warehouse, Liverpool
5 I was prompted to include the next shots by a BBC news article about the research station at Ny Alesund, Spitsbergen, Norway. I have posed some shots from here previously on this thread.
BBC News - So remote, it could pass for Mars
We stopped there while on a cruise in July 2010. This photo show Richard posing with a copy of our local mag which was running a holiday photos competition where you had to have a copy of the mag in the photo and prove where you had been. He was on the landing stage outside this building with the details on. We didn't win!
6 These are the lions outside the door of the Chinese building, as mentioned in the BBC article
7 The North Pole hotel
8 Windows, doors and steps - the Polar Research Institute
9 Nothing but windows - but not sure there's anything growing in there!

Today in Pictures, at 100 miles an hour.

1. A brown Hawker Dragonfly.
2. You don't think they will be so dominant until they are up, this is from the canal just short of Riley's Swing Bridge.
3. Thistle seeds now old enough to leave home, and set up a family of their own.
4. A Marmalade Hoverfly, on a Field Bindweed.
5. Common Darter Dragonflies in the process of mating and laying eggs, this was a difficult shot due to their speed, check out the wings, almost invisible.
6. From the junction at Church, just short of the Dunkenhalgh Way. There was something a bit out of sync here. A gridlocked junction and the installation of wind turbines !
7. This is the caterpillar of the Lime Hawk Moth.

You can say what you like about this thread, but you learn some stuff, get taken around the world, and get to see whats right under your nose. This is Dave Mac for News at Ten handing you back to the studio.

Think they are all of the same period, it's just the design. Brewery sadly closed in 2009, don't know the current state of play but probably sold for residential development.

It's sort of South-east.:D From that position you'll never get the sun coming up behind those buildings, if that's what you mean?

You may have to blow up the picture a bit to see it but the life belt is held on the wall by a wire cradle at the bottom and a wire hook at the top. The thing wot looks like a club is actually the device for throwing the belt out to sea. Grab hold of the bit that looks like a hand hold and pull the "club" out of the belt. The fat end of the club contains a rope the end of which which you can see attached to the life belt as a black lop at about eleven o'clock. My other half worked this out and then I found some pics on google images to confirm.

Nest question?

8 Windows, doors and steps - the Polar Research Institute
9 Nothing but windows - but not sure there's anything growing in there!

Are all these photos in Cork or some in Iceland? :D

No, hold the club in one hand and throw the life belt with the other. The rope is there so you can pull the belt back hopefully with rescued person inside. My other half tells me he once threw one that just had a rope without a fancy container like this and forgot to hold on to the end of the rope!

This one seems to be a Scandinavian design and they do like to keep things tidy!

Well what i was going to say is they both have very similar architecture - or is it just the buildings you've chosen to photograph? Cheers.

Sorry not with it last night, the first three were Cork and no 4 was Liverpool, the rest Norway.

Wouldn't say the Arctic buildings were similar to the rest being mainly more of the more modern practical shack type of building you see up there, in Greenland as well. But there are similarities certainly between Cork and Liverpool maybe that's what you mean. And maybe it's just what I chose to select for this particular batch of pics. Later today I'll post some more from Liverpool.

Today in Pictures, has the Coppice got steeper?

1. Before the ascent a glance sideways.
2. A path I've never walked before around the base (runs parallel to Burnley Road, but not closely )
3. Bracket fungus on a dead tree, still upright.
4. This is why I've never used this path, the end is almost vertical to the top, I am halfway up at this point and cant talk or breath.
5. After a walk around the top we walk past the lodges and find the area that is having new paths installed.
6. Before the descent, we sit on the new benches, taking in the view, in the warm sunshine.
7. Walking through the heather, then down the hill.
8. A view across to Whinney Hill.
9. Down the slope, how did he get so dirty? ( note the new haircut )
10. Parked the car in the cemetery, just a quick photo of a bee on Sea Holly.

Thats it, time for a lie down with a cup of Complan and a couple of Fig Newtons.

I've noticed the hills are getting steeper as well. Glad you like the benches. Peel and Huncoat area council money that. The footpaths on the coppice are looking good as well.

It was just what was required, the only place to sit before was the monument steps. There is of course a seat facing roughly towards Huncoat but that is close to the easterly bypass.

More Italian windows today, from Florence, showing the Vasari Corridor. The pictures show the windows of this structure on the tops of the buildings as it makes its way through the streets and over the river. The Corridor was built in 1564 by Giorgio Vasari in only five months at the time of the wedding between Francesco I de' Medici and Giovanna of Austria; it served to link up the Pitti Palace, where the Grand Duke resided, with the Uffizi (or offices) where he worked.

It is a covered walk, almost a kilometre in length, an overhead passageway that starts out from the Uffizi, heads towards the Arno and then, raised up by huge arches, follows the river as far as the Ponte Vecchio, which it crosses by passing on top of the shops. The meat market on the bridge was at this time transferred elsewhere, so as not to offend the Grand Duke's sensitive nose with unpleasant smells on his walk, and replaced (from 1593) with the goldsmiths who continue to work there today.

On the other side of the Arno, the corridor passes through the interior of the church of Santa Felicita, down the tops of the houses and the gardens of the Guicciardini family until it finally reaches the Boboli gardens and the apartments in the Pitti Palace.

Vasari thus created a monumental urban "footpath" that took the absolute power of the ruler right into the historic heart of the city. In fact, a second corridor above Via della Ninna links the other side of the palace of the Uffizi with Palazzo Vecchio, the seat of Florentine government since the 13th century.

The Corridor was restored and reopened to the public in 1973 but can only be visited by appointment or in groups. Apart from the fact that the visitor can enjoy some magnificent and little-known views over the city from its round windows, the passageway contains over 1000 paintings, all dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as the important collection of self-portraits by some of the most famous masters of painting from the 16th to the 20th century.

Vasari Corridor

1 Starting point: the Palazzo Vecchio
2 The Uffizi, originally the offices, now a famous art gallery
3 The windows of the corridor carried on arches along the north bank of the river
4 The Ponte Vecchio: the windows in the middle of the bridge were enlarged by Mussolini in WWII so Hitler could see the panorama of the river. It is said he admired the view so much he ordered the bridge not to be bombed
5 On the Ponte Vecchio. The tall building on the far left is a medieveal tower - the corridor went through several of these on its way but the owners of this one refused to let it pass through and the builders had to go round it
6 The corridor built out round the tower
7 Nearing the end of the corridor
8 Final destination, the Pitti Palace

I had a look around Todmorden park today.
First picture is the gate house roof and chimney.
Then a few general shots of the park.
As I passed the cricket ground I snapped a batsman clipping the ball for two runs.

Then the first pub I ever had a drink in, it's nice to see it being done up.
We were allowed in once we were wearing long trousers, remember in the 50's boys didn't get long trousers as young as they do today. All the boys in the first form of Todmorden Grammar school wore short trousers.

My allowance is up for today so I have a few more for tomorrow.

Today in Pictures, Dean Clough Reservoirs, right round the edge, with a bit of mooching.

1.The walk through the woods to get to the reservoir has become a disappointment, lots of "campfires" discarded stuff, and for some reason people take axes and chop down trees.
2. On the way round the bottom res. a view across to Pendle Hill.
3. Strange sight on the top res. I thought they looked like cormorants, is that possible?
4. Down passed the top res.
5. 6.7.8. a selection of fungi, some I have never seen before.
9. another view across the top res.
10. Where did this steep bit come from, it wasn't there on the way down.

Me and my macro shots, nowt to do with the picture in question but another macro shot, I was on my hands and knees, taking a shot of a fungi at ground level in the woods mentioned previously. I was so absorbed in the moment and Bob was sat beside me waiting, I failed to notice a couple with a dog had walked up behind me and come to a standstill when they spotted me. Well I just had to explain, but the truth sounded a bit "iffy" I was taking a picture of a fungi ! Oh Yes!

I am still playing 'catch up' with this thread.
I have a few pics to post. Not taken today, but taken over the last few days.
You all know how I like sunsets......I have had a feast of them.....to many to put on here.
1) The sun slipping down into the horizon.
2) Last golden rays filtered by the framework of the pier.
3) I never really knew what this structure was - turns out it was part of the pier...gilded with sunset
4) Lytham Windmaill and the expanse of green - unencumbered by structures this time.
5) Last light filtered through the clouds.
6) Bee on a flower - Seen in Ashton Park.
7) Silhouette of a young lady walking on the prom.
8) Statue on the War Memorial in Ashton Park. I really like this memorial. Will post more pics another day.

That is my offering for today. If you would like to see more...there are more pics on my Flickr page.

8) Statue on the War Memorial in Ashton Park. I really like this memorial. Will post more pics another day.
Thats a very good photo, has me puzzled though never seen ammo pouches on a shoulder belt like that before, and the top fastening on his webbing gaiters is a new one on me. Where exactly is Ashton Park.
Retlaw.

Re: Today in pictures

Ashton Park is in St Annes.
I don't know how old the statues and the friezes are, on the monument, but the soldier looks very 'present day'....not at all in the style of the second world war era.

Churchfcrules........I'm glad you liked the sunsets.......and I didn't really have a 'wobble on'.........I was in an exposed(weatherwise) position and it was a bit breezy.
I have some more of these in a similar vein.......I will check if they are the same.
I have a little tripod(gorillapod) but there was nothing suitable to anchor it to to get the same viewpoint.
I don't mind constructive criticism. It is how we learn and improve.

Many thanks Dave for posting that link.

I'm wondering if perhaps the statues are newer than the actual obelisk...Haven't read your links Sue.

Quick answer to that is no! All of a piece. To me they look right in period.

Have a look at the links - will take little time.

I will enjoy doing that...but later, then I can read them in peace.

Shouldn't really be here. :D

Many thanks Margaret all those freezes are WW1. Uniform, rifles, equpiment & the nurses uniform, the odd one out it the main seated soldier, the name of the sculptor is on the base, that should give date.

By Walter Marsden from Church, 1924, who also did the memorial in Gatty Park and others. No suggestion that the contorted soldier “with twisting body and clenched fist” is of a different date. See the clip in my previous links showing the unveiling.

On the opposite side of the memorial is a seated mother with a baby.......I took this to be - soldier is the face of war.....Mother and babe - the face of peace and hope for the future.
It may not be meant to convey that, but that is how I read it.

I really like the memorial and spent quite a long time reading the plaque and looking at the friezes. and yet the young soldier looks somehow not of the era.
He looked more current.

I thought the statue on the top looked a lot like the one in Gatty park....now I know the same sulptor was involved in both of them, it does make sense

Carvings today, from northern climes...

1 and 2 Adam and Eve on the doors, craft shop in Iceland
3 Watermelon carved by a crew member on our cruise ship
4 Harpoon fisherman, Tromso, Norway
5 Brewery sign, Flam, Norway
6 and 7 Wood carvings from the Old Pharmacy, Alesund, Norway. Now a museum. The town was destroyed in a fire in 1904 and rebult in Art Nouveau style. This building is full of superb craftsmanship of the period
8 Plaster frieze, Alesund. Many of the houses reconstructed after the fire have similar decoration on the outside
