We had a visit this morning from this little Furry ratbag, after grubbing around in the flower beds for his "stash", he then scuttled up the apple tree to scoff his goodies, when that was gone it was off to the feeding station for a bit of "Self service". :)

Re: Today in pictures
Aww.......I want one like thast in my back yard.
Not much chance of that, though Ma has an abundance of the grey ones coming to her backyard for a feast. |

I haven't been to Southport for weeks and weeks(sorry Gordon)......but today seeing as it was fine this morning I was roused from my bed and told to 'Stir my stumps'.
Only a few pics taken. Here they are. 1-3 A wooden horse Sculpture outside the Bold Boutique Hotel. don't know if this is made of driftwood. It is very similar(though smaller) to one at The Eden Project in cornwall 4) enjoying spring sunshine by the boating lake(it was not as warm as it looked) 5) A swan that had just chased two mallard ducks from its territory. 6) a family enjoying a leisurely boat ride...though at least one member looks bored to tears. |

Ah Sunday, time for a spot of D.I.Y, as the Summer is creeping up on us a new BBQ was required .....
The Furry Ratbag was back again this morning for his Brunch - The New BBQ, this is what was bought = This is what I got = Just over 2 hours later .... TADAH! Best design feature ever, a built in bottle opener :D |
Re: Today in pictures
Looks like a well built BBQ. I'm curious about the use of the word "Ottawa" in photo 3 - the name of Canada's capital city. The squirrels you have are adorable - I love the tufts on their ears :)

After reading Margaret's recent blog entry in which she told the story of her mother adopting a new doggie friend, I thought I'd share a photo of my mum with her pup Lexi. Our furry friends give us so much joy, and we do our best to give them the best life we can.
|
Re: Today in pictures
Awwwww, she is beautiful.
Your mum looks very happy too. |

these are mine from yesterday.
Ma asked me to make cards for the family who gave up their much loved pet(never an easy thing to do, whatever the circumstances)....one from Roxy and one from Ma...so this is what I did. I also composed the verse inside the card from Roxy(now look away guys, this might just be a bit too schmaltzy for you to stomach....but I know it will mean a lot to the family). Also a picture of Roxy...now renamed Princess Roxy of Riley Villa(tongue in cheek) Last but not least is Ma and Roxy.......looking very pleased with herself |
Re: Today in pictures
What a lovely idea to send (and make) the cards! Princess Roxy is a doll, and your Mum is too :)

Re: Today in pictures
Ma is looking well on there.

Thank you Carolyn and Frank.....though she thinks she looks like the witch of Endor.
I will tell her of your compliments. I might even show her if I can latch onto a wireless signal tomorrow. |

Spring is here in southern Ontario, but tenuously so. It's still quite cold at night (minus 3 this morning), but the days are sunny and almost warm :)
This native plant has arrived again - my friends say it is 'Mayapple'. All I know is it seems like an old friend: pops up every year and brings a smile. |

Today was a mooch around Hameldon Woods, the Bluebells are not as good as they used to be due to scrambler bikes using it as part of a route.
|
Re: Today in pictures
Still beautiful....and I can imagine the scent of them too.
When we were little we used to pick bluebells....But Ma would never allow them in the house. They had to sit in the milk bottle or jam jar on the window bottom outside.....and they never lasted more than a day or so. Much better left to grow. |

For some reason or other they've got a thing about bears (x3) - Fruit, sweeties, cakes & an owd Baggage scoffing cake! :) - Didn't fancy enquiring to deeply - Hengelo And to finish off, some Furries (3 different ones I believe judging by their colouring) that have been visiting us of late to grapple me nuts ..... that we put out for them. |

Ive once again been a guest at the British Legion Hotel in Southport, fantastic hotel and staff all free with trips out to Liverpool cathedral one day and Chester another.
I drove home via Formby to see the red squirrels which are far to quick to get a decent photo and Crosby to see the Antony Gormley iron men statues. |
Re: Today in pictures
Love the shots of the Cathedral.
One day I will get to see it in the stone(rather tham flesh). When I visit the great cathedrals I am in awe of the men who worked on them(even though this Cathedral is modern by Cathedral standards)...knowing that they would never see the finished building, but having the faith that it would be majestic, beautiful and inspire folk like me with awe. All this wonderful work was done by the hands of men, to the glory of their maker...and religious or not, you have to give them respect for that. |
Re: Today in pictures
I agree Margaret. I like taking photographs of the features inside.
The red stone is the Liverpool and lighter stone the Chester cathedral. |
Re: Today in pictures
Thank you for letting me visit both of them through your pictures Russell.
I love your other pictures too, but architecture does it for me...especially Church architecture. |
Re: Today in pictures

The camera is 'full frame' and files too large for posting here so I will resize them tomorrow. We spent almost two hours in each cathedral, one Monday and one Friday. I just sat down taking in all the architecture and thinking about the men who worked there and the skills involved, how they raised the large stones and made the arched roof without supports. |
Re: Today in pictures
Yes.....I do much the same.....and I am struck by their craftsmanship.....and the fact that they did it without any heavy machinery.
I wish the stones could talk. What stories they would no doubt tell. |

This week the weather is a sunny hot and humid 30 degrees - quite a change from the snow flakes flying around two weeks ago! We took full advantage and drove to a conservation area for a picnic. We had it all to ourselves - just the way I like it. There was a nice breeze to keep the bugs away.
Then while I was in the basement at the Pottery Guild, a couple of toads peered through the window - they'd fallen down the window well and couldn't get out. Of course I had to rescue them and they went on their merry way :) Finally, I had to sneak one in of Miss Pris sniffing out a container of home made BBQd burgers (I gave her a bit and she didn't like it after all!) |

On these hot mornings we like to take our breakfast to a nice breezy spot, and around here the best place for that is the Glen Williams graveyard on a hill overlooking the valley. It's not very old by English standards, being founded in 1833. The inmates are very quiet, leaving us to enjoy our Eccles cake and Tim Horton's beverages in peace.
Today, coming home I had a surprise: a snapping turtle had come up from the ponds, on the march looking for a nesting ground, and being closely inspected by a local cat. Fearing for both their safety (those turtles pack a mean bite!) I shovelled said turtle into a bucket and put it where I thought it might prefer to lay its eggs. The cat stalked off in disgust. After about an hour, that silly beast had resumed its climb up the roadway - the turtle, not the cat :) |

Today it was the first day of the1940's weekend at Ramsbottom.
We were there farily early.....before it got going.....but by lunch time the place was bumping. I took over 200 pictures.......so it has been hard trying to choose just ten for today. 1) Not the Andrews sisters. 2) Kiss him Goodbye. 3) A vintage Rover with the Viking mascot. Thought the boys on here might just like this one. 4) A 1939 Royal enfield motorbike...the owner said it is a rare model and he did tell me what it was......but I was mesmerised by his moustache and have forgotten what he sadi. 5)You aren't listening to me are you? I am not sure that is what they are saying, but that is my spin. 6) Gladys and Gertie.....Ladies who 'do' 7) We'll meet again.......Vera type songs on the station platform. 8) the Frenchman left his bike. 9) a very young looking airman and a boy scout. 10) another for the lads.......can't beat a steam train...the smell of hot metal, coal burning.......very masculine. |
Re: Today in pictures
I'm going tomorrow Margaret.
Parking at Rawtenstall and station hopping. I've been a few times but lost the file with the photos. I'll be there snapping away tomorrow. I'm down to my last two complimentary tickets. We used to get lots when June was training the puppy guide dogs. I had ten left when she passed away. |
Re: Today in pictures
Russell, I hope it is a lovely day for you.
I thoroughly enjoyed myself......and wanted to stay longer, but old grumble guts was getting a bit restless......and he said he had a square bum from sitting down. I left him to sit while I ran about like a dog at a fair. |

I had a laugh last year when I asked three ladies if I could take their photos because they were very well dressed in 40's style. They turned round with their backs to me bent forward and lifted their skirts to reveal long bloomers and seamed stockings. Very tastefully done of course. |
Re: Today in pictures
I think that would have made a brilliant picture.
I will be going through mine today and resizing them so that they load easily. |
Re: Today in pictures
I put a selection of pictures on my Flickr page and within a short space of time it had reached 775 views......this might not be a lot for some Flickr posters, but it beats anything I have had for my pictures.
It just shows how popular this kind of event is. The shops and cafes benefit from the extra trade it brings to the place too. |

Some more from yesterday.
1940's weekend in Ramsbottom. 1) that'll scare the wind out of the baby! 2) A briefing(or maybe they are discussing racing odds) Monochrome for effect. 3) Never miss a chance to lie down in the sun. 4) overpaid, oversexed and Over Here...well isn't that what they said about the GI's(some of these look like school uniform would be more appropriate. 5) Vintage cars. It is really sad that i am able to say i remember these bein a coomon sight on the roads. 6) taking five. 7) Have you got your gas mask dear? 8) Swanking in whites 9) I salute you. 10) Winner, winner, chicken dinner...alas not southern fried...English roast! |
