My partner's cousin has just bought a very nice new caravan near Prestatyn so we had a few days there. that's another free holiday lined up.

Maybe some of you who used the coast road to Prestatyn will remember a ship being run aground 40 odd years ago and made into a night club. Its been derelict for 30 years and inaccessible but its slowly being tarted up a bit.

1 and 2, Views from the van.
3 to 9 around the ship. It totally fenced in with security guards.
Finally we had a run into Rhyl.

Please forgive the watermark... I posted a few photos recently on a lorry site and they have since been copied and put up for sale on ebay so now every downloaded photo has my mark on it.

Rob....I know that sentiment.
Pasha(my lovely late tuxedo cat) used to look at what we were giving her and give us the look that said 'if you don't eat it...then I don't eat it'

With the kittens...we have started how we mean to go on and they much prefer dry biscuits...although Rufus does like ice cream and cream....though he only gets to lick out a dish now and then as this stuff is not good for him.

This is him playing in a carrier bag...he has a fscination for them.

Re: Today in pictures

Rob, they are strictly house cats.
They are not allowed out without one of us being there...and then only in the Yard.
We have a very large neutered male tabby and white cat who has taken up residence in our garage.
I feed him and Rufus goes out to see him...lies on his cushion and they groom each other.
Ruby is the escape artist and lurks at the back door waiting to dart through the tiniest crack...she has made it into the yard, but she doesn't go into the garage as she is not keen on Samson(the name I have given to the tabby).

I know you aren't supposed to let children play with plastic bags...but I was watching them :)
1) Ruby lying on our bed
2) Rufus in the plastic bag
3) Rufus in the bag and Ruby telling over him(can't you just see it in her face 'mama, Rufus is in the plastic bag!...OK I know I am nuts)
4) Rufus out of the bag

As for Zeus...yes he was knocked down on Blackburn road...his owner was looking all over for him. Himself found him and took him back to them...they were heartbroken...he was a lovely cat. Very gentle.

Russell loved your pics of Portmeirion.
It brought back some very happy memories of taking Ma down there...and going there with a work colleague.
We laughed a lot and Ma brought back the ugliest plant I have ever seen....a Gunnera(I hope I have spelled that right).

The conditions weren`t great for the sky, I try to get as close to realistic as possible (most of the time;)) but when the sun lights up the clouds like it does my camera needs a little help. Even bracketing didn`t work that well, so they are what they are, just a bit of fun for me while excercising the dogs.
4 pics here are the attempt at bracketing, skies still not great even on the photo exposed for the sky.

I will admit the image of the cloud behind the kite wasn't planned.
It was a gusty day and the kite was whizzing everywhere and I was trying to track it with the camera. I had one or two very crisp shorts but that was just a lucky one which I didnt know I'd got until later, pity it's not as sharp as the others.

My time in foreign parts gave me a healthy awareness of the damage one of Boris' cousins could do(if you were not careful, that is). :)
It gave the Oz phrase 'go bite your bum' (the paler version of go forth and reproduce)a whole new meaning.
If you got bit on the behind by a red back, lurking under the dunny seat...you would soon find out who your friends were...especially if you asked them to 'suck the poison out of this'.

To be honest, there's no great mystery or secret to producing 'professional' looking photographs and almost everyone can do it, to take your image from 'happy snaps' to 'professional looking'.

A good lens is useful the one I used for these was £800 3 1/2 years ago (Canon Zoom EF 24-105mm f4L).

Understanding how you camera works and moving beyond simiply setting it to Auto (stuff like depth of field, exposure compensation, Auto Focus Points etc etc).

A lot of practice - I've taken 70,000+ in the 3 years 8 months I've had my DSLR.

Post processing your image once you've taken it - this can included everything from changing from colour to mono, to framing the final image.

A good eye, though is probably the most important, seeing a potential in any subject - not just the most obvious.

Have a look at the top of the page, there's a search box, have a look for uploading pictures & you'll be presented with numerous threads on how to get your pictures on site without distorting the parameters of the page. :)

Margaret Pilkington 14-09-2017 06:23

Re: Today in pictures

I think most of us have done something like this in the past.
I know I certainly have.
I posted instructions on how to put thumbnails on here not so very long ago.

As for getting professional results...yes what you say is true...but I think the beauty of this thread is...Everyone feels that they can post their pictures here.

I also think that to be a decent photographer you have to have a 'good eye'...the ability to pick a subject and capture it so that it makes people go 'wow'.
There are a few members on here with that ability in spades...and I often post of my envy of their shots.
It is also about having the opportunity, of being in the right place at the right time with your camera at the ready.

1 Hawker Dragonfly - just much closer
2 Ichneumon Wasp - most likely female extesorius
3 Speckled Wood
4 Shield Bug
5 Ladybirds - don't usually see them in groups like this
6 Lacewing larvae - fercious predators - the debris on it is the thinks it's eaten
7 Mystery - other than there's a Ladybird in there

I love the ladybird picture.
The shield bug gives me the creeps....quite like the dragonfly picture too...so perhaps bugs could grow on me.(well, only the pictures of them, I mean)
Oh and well done for cracking the thumbnail thing.

Nice one on the lizard - speaking of which I saw my first ever Common Lizard this year, at the back of Pendle Hill of all places.

Todays OADED - 15th Sept 2017

Troilus luridus - Bronze Shield Bug Final instar - with it's dinner. If you're a bit squeamish when it comes to bugs (or just about to eat), you might want to give this one a miss.

I've photographed Shield Bugs many times over the last 3 years, but never knew what they ate or how... I guess that is now answered... also another first for me..

Whilst that is certainly true, you can also hone that 'eye', most professional photographers when they go out have a specific set of images they're looking for. However it's something all photographers can use, regardless of skill level..

For example there was a photographer on the BBC news website this week that liked photographing abandoned buildings (Urb-exing or Urban Exploring).

So you could set yourself a weekly challange and say 'This week I'll photograph things that are 'Red' (as an example). Run it from Monday to Sunday and give yourself 30-60 minutes each day. Make it a realistic challange, something you could achieve. (if you're stuck for a theme Google Photography Themes and you'll find plenty of ideas.)

The first one I did was a set of 5 square images with a white border of things I'd photographed around Accrington that were mostly Shades of Grey (including black and white) and posted on a photograhy forum and someone asked were the other 45 where.... Which did lead to a 50 Shades of Grey, 50 Shades More.. And Further More Shades of Grey..

If you do this every week, it's amazing how much your photography improves, because you're constantly honing the eye so you're always looking....

Plus the most important thing - always have your camera with you - I take it even if I'm just going into town to pay a bill. I'm not a professional photographer, so I don't make money from my images 99.9% is just done for sheer fun.

If you do see photographers out with camera's ask them what they've been photographing, almost all will tell you places to go, things they've seen.

Earlier this year, there was a Cormorant on Platts Lodge in Accrington, it got so used to people that you could get within 12ft of it..

The mystery bug could possibly be an early moult female Earwig but only a guess.

Yes, you can hone your skills.
Good photographers also have a keen eye for opportunities too....and sometimes they see things a little differently.
You can set out with an aim in mind and come back with something completely different to what you were looking for.
I have a camera in my bag all the time. You never know when an opportunity to get a good picture will present itself to you.

That did occur to me also, it didn't look like the front end of a bug, to be honest it's why macro/bug hunting is so fascinating, you just never know what you might see.

Exactly my point, but not just limited to professional photographers, almost anyone has that ability, good photographers aren't born - yes to some it comes naturally - just like being able to paint pictures or compose music or are great at science or math.

It really is a case of honing 'your eye', the opportunities just comes down to having your camera at the right time, and some times a hellava lot of luck...

Not sure if anyone has seen this but a photographer captured a stoat/weasel on a woodpeckers back as it was flying:
