You can almost smell the leaves, taste the air.....and it is like champagne....crisp cool and goes straight to your head. |

Thank you Margaret, you’re so kind.
My favourite is the one looking down the path between the trees with Marlene In red walking away. |
Re: Today in pictures
I can't choose a favourite...I like them all
Another thing is....that statue....I would bet my life it is by the same sculptor as the one in Gatty Park....and I love it |
Re: Today in pictures

The memorial in Towneley Park was designed by Walter Henry Gilbert, the lesser known cousin of the famous sculptor Sir Alfred Gilbert.
The one outside Elmfield Hall in Gatty Park was designed by Walter Marsden who was born in Lancashire. He saw active service in the First World War and was awarded the Military Cross. |
Re: Today in pictures
So not the same sculptor.....and yet they look similar in style.
I did not know who the sculptors were and was too idle to search....so Thankyou Ryewolf for furthering my education yet again. You can always learn something on Accyweb....one thing is Never Bet!:) and certainly not with your life(though mine is old and tatty). |
Re: Today in pictures
I only knew because I've photographed them both before, several times, and had researched who the sculptors were. The image of the one outside Elmfield Hall I took earlier this month.
I've also photographed the one in Oak Hill Park, the WWI memorial which was designed by Sir Charles Herbert Reilly, the sculptor was Herbert Tyson Smith. The war memorial in Oswaldtwistle was produced by Louis Frederick Roslyn, he also created the memorials in Clitheroe, Darwen, Haslingden and Rawtenstall. |

While home the other week I visited a good friend (Ex Military mate) who lives down on Mersea Island. On the approach to the Island they've been paying their respects to local lads who fell in the "Great War".
I also eventually managed to visit the National Arboretum in Staffordshire, a very moving & emotional experience (in particular the Bastion memorial wall, KRA Elliot being for me the most significant). |

Forgive my ignorance, but what was the occasion? Cheers |
Re: Today in pictures
It was part of the British Textile Biennial Festival.
This was celebrating the pioneering Blackburn Film-makers Mitchell and Kenyon and the centenary of the Cotton Exchange becoming a cinema. In 1899 Mitchell and Kenyon produced KIDNAPPING BY INDIANS, a film that is now recognised as the first western ever made |

I went to Manchester last week..thought I had better make the most of it while the X41 is still with us.
So there are three pictures from that visit(I did take more)..... and yesterday I took a young man to The St Nicholas Markets in York...we went on a day trip with moving people. If I say it was packed then this is an understatement...could not realy view the wares as there were too many folk milling around. So there are some pics of YORK. Some of these were taken at dusk so they look a bit dark, but that is because it was dark. I hope you enjoy my pics 1) a bauble on the tree outside the Cathedral.....if you look closely you can see Manchester reflected and little me. 2) this sculpture is outside St Anne's Church....and while I am not religious this sculpture makes me feel incredibly sad. 3) the feet of the Sculpture which clearly show it to be a homeless Christ crucified(there is a message in there somewhere) 4) A glorious Christmas Wreath outise an eating establishment in York 5) A christmas Lantern outside the Lamb and Lion by Bootham Gate. 6) Cascade of light on a church nar the minster. 7) the green space near the minster in dusk and lit with festive lights. 8) Shoppers gazing into well lit windows. 9) Warm and cosy glow of the tearooms. 10 Another well lit shop front. |

My partner bought me the best present I have ever had. A day out on a vintage train hauled by the Flying Scotsman, We travelled to Carlisle where we stayed for three hours before returning along the Carlisle Settle line to Blackburn. We were upgraded for nothing to a six seater first class compartment with another couple who we got on with really well. Free coffee was served and both the other couple and ourselves had taken a a wicker hamper for refreshments on the journey.
There were so many photographers pushing and shoving to get photos when we stopped at Carlisle that I only managed to get one shot which didn't have people across the shot. The Flying Scotsman with 14 coaches must have been a fantastic sight as it hurtled up Shap fell on the West Coast line without loosing speed. It runs again this Saturday (21/12/2019) and I think it leaves Blackburn about 0830 hrs heading towards Clitheroe and onwards to Carlisle. |

Fab photos, as ever, Ryewolf.
Last one is beautiful but it’s interesting how the B&W one seems more atmospheric. I wonder if that’s merely the case for those of us old enough to remember when B&W photos, films, and TV were the norm? |
Re: Today in pictures
I agree about the black and white pics....they always seem to have more impact.
Fantastic Shots Ryewolf...well done. |

I spent some time painting this butterfly...and today I framed it. The gold writing on the mount says 'May Your Life be Full of Butterfly Colours' It is not easy to see on this picture....but it is there. |

It is a great picture, but if I am honest I hate the sight of these monstrosities.
They are a blight on the landscape, this would be tolerable if they were efficient, but they aren't. |
Re: Today in pictures
Just out of interest....the blades of these monsters are manufactured on the Isle of Wight on the site that used to produce hovercrafts.
I saw barges ferrying them across the Solent from Cowes to Plymouth(I think). |

Re: Today in pictures
Yes you are right...it was Portsmouth(I get those place mixed up)...I think the blades I saw being shifted were marked Volvo(it surprised me)...but I could be wrong....not sure if it is a subsidiary of the car maker.

To be honest I don't mind them and they are no more a blight on the landscape than electricity pylons you find everywhere... The Tentering Tower or The Wet Tower at Stubbins near Ramsbottom (a Grade II listed building) was a cloth store used by the nearby Porritt's Mill, originally a single storey building, a second storey with battlements on 3 sides was added later. Cloth from the mill would be hung on long tenter-frames in the field to the rear of it. Nearby there is a small quarry, now used as an allotment, that I assume was used for the building material of the tower.
1/ and 2/ Exterior of the Tentering Tower 3/ The Roof Line of the second storey 4/ Post Holes for beams for the second storey floor, also cast iron guttering near the top. 5/ and 6/ At some point the ground floor was converted to a stable, so I'm assuming that these metal objects hammered into the wall were part of the stable fittings 7/ Exterior showing ground floor arched entrance and stairs to the second storey. 8/ On the path to the tower were the remains of a cobbled path with a central gulley. Woollen cloth was attached to the tenter frame by tenterhooks at the selvage ("self-finished" edge of fabric) whilst it was drying to prevent it from becoming misshapen; which is were the phrase 'being on tenterhooks comes from'. |
Re: Today in pictures

Nice shots, Ryewolf, and great that someone is recording this current situation.
In years to come these shots will be part of our history, maybe by then we’ll know a bit more about whether it was (1) necessary, (2) an over-reaction, or (3) the first example of a recurring event. |

Nice photos and a nice walk! Reminds me of a walk I did 4 years ago (aged 73). I was visiting Accrington & friends for the first time in some 20 years or so. As I was staying at the Dunkenhalgh hotel in Clayton, that is where I started my walk: - Blackburn Rd (looking at where I served my apprenticeship English Electric) on to the junction with Whalley Rd. - Whalley Rd. on to Whinny Hill - Over Whinney Hill to Bolton Ave. on to Burnley Rd. - Down to the Cemetery (visiting Mother & father's Grave) - Down to the town centre - Up Church St. to Cotton St. - Belfield Road (looking at the house number 5), where I used to live and no. 1 where Grandad Swain lived. - On to Nuttall St. and Mount St. - Through Priestly Clough (my old playing grounds) - Up and on to St. Georges Playing fields (where we played football & cricket from Woodnook school) - Down to Belfield Rd to Hudson St. (looking at my old school Woodnook) - Down Royds St. to Nuttall St. - On to Manchester Rd. - Down Warner St. on to the Market Hall (had a coffee & sandwich) - Back up to Whalley Rd. - On towards Clayton and back to the hotel. Starting time: 10:00am Finishing time: 16:00 ( 17:00 Cheers |
Re: Today in pictures
That was a very good walk....and took in a lot of the places from my Childhood...especially the Belfield Rd and Priestley clough bits.
I used to tramp up Belfield Rd to school every day...to go to Woodnook school. I used to go to Peel park, but took the Avenue Parade route. Priestly clough was our playground....up as far as the five arches....so thank you for stirring those memories. |
