I think some pats on the back are deserved to someone (don`t know who though), it`s not that long ago this river was known as the river stink, now look what we have. A half mile (guessing that) of river that if other areas knew we had would have them green with envy. Kingfishers all down that stretch, wagtails, herons, buzzards (not sure if everyone would welcome them) and now dippers. A bit further up there are also sand martins. This has now become my favourite walk, and it`s 15 minutes walk away.

Yes, you are right. We have an area which is rich in bird life.....and I sometimes think we do not appreciate the full value of this......it takes some stunning pictures to make us realise what is on our doorstep......it is only about five minutes walk for me.

Re: Today in pictures

I believe Egrets have also been seen down there, but it`s not just birds, if you go early enough you`d be unlucky not to bump into a deer.
When did this area get cleaned up and by who?

How to combat boredom.
Fill a sink with water, add a drop of red cordial, pull the plug out and watch the water run down the hole.

I won't have to wait much longer for the white coated men to come for me.

Before they do can any of you expert flower power photographers tell me what the plant is.
My late wife had it given two years ago and I keep it well watered on the window bottom, cutting bits off it as it gets too big. It's about two feet high now. No one who calls has a clue or how to look after it for the best.

Serious now, my clothes gave just been returned (11.10 am), from the lady who does my ironing. I am going to my cousin's at Silsden for a barbeque and I would look well in just long grey Mac. Or would I?
She lives in a rambling old vicarage with a large outbuilding so I think we will be having the party indoors, it's absolutely pouring down there, I just rung her to see if it is still on.
My jam butties have been made so I can't let her down.

Somebody mentioned parks and cemeteries the other day.
For those who don't get to see Accrington Cemetery here is a section of it.
last week when I was putting flowers on June's grave.

Have a great day Russell......even if the festivities are indoors(there is not a remote chance they would have a barbecue outdoors in this downpour) you can still have a fine time chatting and socialising...and to me that is better than barbecued food(for barbecued it should read 'cremated and tasting of charcoal' - not my favourite flavours).
I will stick with the traditional Sunday Roast.

Poinsettia, grown for the Christmas market due to its red bracts, it will only get red bracts again when it has 12 hours of darkness and the same of daylight. It is best kept short, cut back about 8 to 12 inches from the base, it will however bleed, so don't do it all at once.

I don't know if the plant is of any attachment to yourself, but they are usually thrown after the bracts have gone, they are part of the grow and throw market, Poinsettias, and Potmums, are some that require specific light regimes to flower at a specific time so are discarded when the flowers, bracts, have gone.

I agree Margaret, when ever I pass a barbecue it smells like a dustbin on fire.
I will probably have had a salad butty made, they know me well.

Thanks for the advice Dave. I will heed it and act accordingly. I assume it is OK to be kept in the kitchen on the window bottom facing West, with lots of light and direct sun from about four PM this time of year.
I hopefully will have a a photo or two later if things go according to the maestro.

Couldn't have put it better - I have managed to keep a Poinsettia going for a few years. They do like light and you have to be careful not to overwater as the leaves drop easily I find. They grow all year round in Tenerife - I have a nice photo with them on taken by the pool where my parents live - I made the photo into a Xmas card for them one year. (There are 2 versions!)

A selection of pics of Vintage cars which were on display in a nearby village for the opening of a new bar/eatery yesterday evening. Number 2 and 5 are both umbeliferous plants, I think 2 is just 5 before it gets its flower head "up" over here there are that many different varieties that look the same they get lumped under the name of Cow Parsley. I remember Susie123 and myself had a go at specific identification of some of these, we never managed it. Just to prove I am a mine of useless information, umbelliferous plants fall under an umbrella of a Genus of over 300, which sub divides into over 3000 species, so its probably best to call it Cow Parsley.

Have discovered the plant is commonly known as Ink-berry or Poke Root in the US - it's correct latin name is Phytolacca decandra. It has a number of uses as a herbal rememdy but the berries are poisonous in large quantites and it acts as a purge!

My day at the barbecue went very well indeed.
We had a hour of sunshine so my cousin got his car out he has built up from scratch based on a three wheel Morgan. Apart from the Guzzi engine and Citroen steering rack and gear box it's all his own work, he even formed the panels. Dash board was on old mahogany table top cut to shape, cut out for the clocks and polished, End of the bonnet is from an old copper immersion heater. It passed it's fit for use test, got a registration number and then the MOT less than a month ago.
We had a nice run around and then it rained again. The barbecue was abandoned and we had a civilized meal indoors. That was until some one served my grog from a warm can into a warm glass, that's really is immoral.
No. 1 A tree for the nature lovers but no barbecue.
No. 3 I brought it out of the workshop but no further.

Today in Pictures, a day that warms the cockles. Therefore; be at peace with god, whatever you conceive him to be, and whatever your labours and aspirations in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace with your soul, with all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world, be cheerful, strive to be happy. (Max Ehrmann 1927).

1. A day Lilly, it won't be here tomorrow.
2. Remembering those that went before their time.
3. Another example of bracts, the flower is the small blue jobby in the middle.
4. Once budgies lived here, now a magnet for cheeky monkeys.
5. Hydrangea giving its "all"
6. It must have been a good turnout, there is candle wax all over the path.
7. It's SPITTING.
8. Memorial Park.
9. Bad hair day.
10. It looks wetter over there than here.

Yesterday I took my Aunt to the Art Gallery in Burlington. It was a lovely warm sunny day, but a bit too hot for us to walk along the lakeshore. Pity!
Aunty was amused by some of the artworks, as you can see!
Then today, I happened upon a native Canadian ceremonial drum and healing prayer circle. It didn't feel right snapping photos as the participants took it quite seriously, but I managed a couple. It's not easy keeping rhythm with one's drum, swatting mozzies, and trying to do justice to the ceremony :)

That's the sort of country event I like Dianne.

It's a Fiat Abarth, 500cc engine, really only enough power to run a Horlick's whisk.
Trust me, I took a cousin (sister of mine host today) to buy one but although she said it was "a nice girly car" it struggled going up the hill in Hebden Bridge where she lived so she left it.
I finished up towing it to a scrap yard a year later after my mate bought it and thrashed it until bits of a piston and rod made a quick exit out of side of the engine block.
The little gauge on the dash which had "Oilio" on never seem to want to move off the bottom stop.

Not really very good photos as they are night-time shots and my camera doesn't have the credentials. I don't have a tripod so it's hard to stay still for the long exposure. Tried some resting the camera on the back of a chair but the best result came from me sitting on the chair and holding my breathe!

Last night's full moon which was the biggest we've had for 20 years apparently. It appeared in a nice spot in front of my house photographically speaking being framed by poplar trees and the roof of the farm chapel. Shame they aren't a bit clearer but you'll get the idea!

If that's the airshow, when you've finished for the day take a trundle down the bypass towards Liverpool, you'll pass RAF Woodvale & if you're lucky the Lanc & other classic aircraft will be parked on the apron. This was from a couple of years ago.

We were in Southport on Saturday and I am sure one of the Lancaster bombers flew overhead.
I had just put the camera away and got the two zip openers tangled up and couldn't get the camera out of the bag quickly enough. I stood for a good while hoping to see it fly back, it didn't happen. Was kicking myself all the way along the pier.
I would have loved to get a shot of the plane in the air.

A wet day here, too ... I guess I could've taken a few pics; but I can't find my camera:confused: Not to worry, I'll pour a stiff one ... smoke a little black in my Bob Marley pipe ... and enjoy a welcome, cool, wet break from the heat of the last four days.:alright: Feeling a little melancholy ... time for a little a la recherce du temps perdu.

And those are really great pics.

Number four is an absolute stunner! I also like number three, as the line of trees across the top of the hill is a typical Lancashire scene, to me. Occasionally I see something like that over here, and it reminds me of home :)

I said I loved number 7...the bird......I didn't say that number 7 was the helicopter!
What I said was the helicopter was flying overhead as I pegged out my two lines of washing......didn't say I liked it or disliked it(OK...I'm just being peevish now...it was a good shot, but I cant operate a camera with my arms loaded with wet washing)

My friends' plane was late landing in Bergamo so I had a wander and observed what people were doing as they had to wait around. Switched flash off to be inobtrusive so some shots a bit out of focus...
There were lots of touching moments when people were meeting up with friends/family coming through arrivals but I didn't take pics as it wouldn't have been right somehow...
We arrived at Lake Garda quite late because of bank holiday traffic -hopefully will have some good photos from here tomorrow!

Looking very stormy out over the lake this morning - they had a deluge yesterday morning apparently. Forecast is for it to improve. Was beautiful when we arrived yesterday evening - snapped this from the balcony.

No they were mostly dark heavies.....it was breezy and they dried nicely.
I like your unobtrusive pics at the airport....they are just the kind of shots I would go for......and I would have snapped those the you felt were 'not right '.
Capturing emotions and feelings is part of the flesh of photography.....otherwise no one would employ photographers at weddings.

Rotated and cropped - what are you tutting about?

I wasn't going to risk dropping my phone or falling into the brambles just so you can see a non-photoshopped picture.

I am just very envious of that shot. I have seen far fewer butterflies this year.......and the ones I have seen have been the Cabbage white variety.
The colours and the definition are pin sharp....well shot
