Today in Pictures, Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.

1. All this nature and not a soul in sight.
2. When you look at it properly you can imagine all the men building this by hand with no mechanisation whatsoever.
3. Time to gain a bit of altitude.
4. A minute ago I was looking up at this, now I am level with the top, trying to breath.
5. Still people-less as far as the eye can see.
6. Strange alien craft discovered.
7. I wonder if anybody heard it.
8. When it's no longer a tree nature puts it to another use.
9. This is all that remains of the underpass that permitted access once the railway came to town.
10. One of the older sections of the woods that lined the railway tracks, and time to head back, and without meeting another person.

What model Lumix is it?
I have three Lumix cameras. My husband has been trying to,persuade me to sell a couple of them......but I can't. They are like friends to me.

It's a Panasonic DMC -TZ30 Lumix with a Leica lens. It is Full high definition and 20 optical zoom. Usually I use it in manual mode but always leave it on auto when it's in my pocket in case I suddenly see something worthwhile to capture and don't have time to get the manual setting right.
It was a brand new model when I got it and it was about £200 but a newer model has come out which is dearer and the only difference is the new one has Wi fi. It is a very handy pocket camera as you can see by some of the photos I take with it.
The Nikon D7100 is a fantastic camera and I have plenty of lenses and accessories with it but a big lump to cart around unless I am doing something special.
The Nikon links to the iphone and is handy at parties etc when you can put it down pointing at a group and sit away from it watching the iphone until you want to take a remote photo shown on the phone, very handy to stop people looking self conscious when you are pointing a big camera at them.
I don't use it for pervy snaps before anybody thinks different..!!

The Olympus DSLR with two lenses and accessories is still in the box unused and for sale.
I might give it an airing tomorrow just to make change.

Russell, I have A lumix G with a variety of lenses(they are micro four thirds) and I have a lumix FZ18...and then the newest of the bunch is the lumix FZ72.
My little camera(which I carry in my bag...along with two spare batteries) is a Fuji EXR 600.
The FZ72 has an impressive Zoom lens. I like taking pictures of people from a distance....natural shots. People are better when they don't know they are being snapped.
I am always looking at cameras. Himself cannot understand it. He reckons they all do the same thing.
He says that I could sell two of them and not miss them at all.
I won't tell you what my response to that suggestion is.:D

My best lens for long zooms is the Nikon 400mm, viabration reduction and auto focus bla bla .
The workman told me the top of the turbine motor, not blade, was 375 feet and I was stood about that distance away. Working on the square of the hypotenuse the camera was about 467 feet away from the subject. I was sat in the car resting the lens on the window bottom, manual mode including focus.

I had donned a high visibility vest and while on site I had my four way indicator winkers going on the car hoping they would think I was an official, I got away with it. I would not have attempted to go on site in a two wheel drive car, the track was really bad and chewed up with the heavy equipment they were using.

To say I was a bit chuffed with the outcome is an understatement.

I have never been much cop at the nature sort of stuff such as the ones Davemac and others post, mainly because my interest doesn't really cover that, unless there is a tractor or steam engine ploughing a field then I all for it.

Russell, you have put you finger on what gets us out of the house and taking pictures, its having an interest in the subject that is being taken. I spent my working life in and around nature, and as such understand the subject, and hope that my insight displays itself in my output.
This is the same for other subjects such as mechanical things, someone who empathises with engines and other things power driven can see the subject in a fashion that would never be apparent to me, and can photograph them with an understanding of the subject.
So the idea of a theme becomes apparent in the type of photographs that we are all taking, some nature, some engines, some people, some birds, and it is this "theme" that sometimes we are not even aware of that shows itself in our photographs, and to other people sometimes before we know it.

Some photographers have people in every photo, mine have none (usually), so what I am saying is play to your strengths, show us your passion, and each of us should work on the theme that inspires.
I tried taking photos of everything, everywhere and mastered none, now an open question to all contributors to this thread "What is Your theme"

Dave I think you are spot on.

Photography is good because it gets you out and about...but you can do it indoors if the weather is inclement.

It is an interest which is so very broad...and has places for all manners of skill...so it is inclusive. No-one is ever going to take the same shot as you so it has a uniqueness about it...and artistic quality

I don't think it matters what you like to photograph, there will always be someone who has an interest in your pictures.
I think you are also right in playing to your own personal strengths and tastes.

For myself I like most subject matter. People, Places, Architecture, Nature and landscapes.light, shadow, reflections......a very broad spectrum.
If I see something and think it might make a good picture I snap it. Most pictures I have in my head...of how I think the pic should look. Sometimes this works and sometimes it does not..but I am happy to give it a try.

I enjoy taking photographs of anything anywhere but I have always had an interest in machinery, steam, diesel, petrol, engines, rail or otherwise and I do like portrait photography and have done a few for people.

The photographs here are not "today in pictures" but taken with a film camera long before the digi age.
The chimney was demolished a few weeks after I took that photo, it was the old Barrow in Furness power station and I had the job of removing all the gas oil and transporting it to Padiham power station.
The station engineer asked me to take the photo, he saw my camera and he didn't have one, he wanted a memento of the stack. I was on the job for three weeks so plenty of time to go to Garth's and get it processed.
Others were taken at Ellen road ring mill soon after the engine had been restored to working order, about 1980, the 3rd photo is the Lancashire boiler which has had an automatic stoker fitted.
The scans from the original were almost 2Mb and resizing them has lost a bit of quality.

The camera was a old Ricoh.

The last one is a model I built earlier, it runs well but I doubt it would power 200 looms like the big ones.
Now if the weather improves I am off to take some nature photos and try to match the "masters". Failing that I know a place in Walsden where there are a few motor cars in the process of restoration so I might call and see the chap there.

I think I'm quite similar to Margaret in that I like a broad range of things - I do love taking photos of people going about their business when they are unaware of being photographed -that's when you see them at their most natural.
I think that I want to capture and share what I see as the feel and the beauty of all that surrounds me - as it is, in the eye of the beholder so to speak - in this case in mine!

The other thing which is good about photography is that it brings all manner of people together.....and there are no language barriers. It is a peaceful pursuit...can be solitary or you can roam in groups.

Quite a while ago I took a picture of the texture of a wall on the opposite side of the canal.
There is nothing very special about it......and if you want to see it you can see it here...
https://www.flickr.com/photos/16506530@N07/7501709566/

Every day this picture gets lots of 'hits'...and over the course of the time it has been on Flicker it has been viewed some 1300+ times.

So whatever you photograph...carry on doing it. Somebody, somewhere is getting pleasure from looking at what you have photographed.

I decided to go to Walsden today to take some nature photographs. I finished up with 225, I was so happy to be around my old haunts again.
No. 1 A very rare plant only grows in the red ground of Walsden, the only photo I got out of the car for in that batch.
No. 2 A black and white tree, location only know to a few, mainly the ones out on day release without a carer.
No. 3 Heading back to the village.
No. 4 Not a bad road for Walsden.

I think that's my 10 for today, more to follow.

More from my visit to my old playground.

No. 1 The little village school I attemded from 3 Y/O until I passed my eleven plus, Sir John Cockroft was educated there long before me, he lived close by and his family owned the local cotton mill.
No. 2 The wickets were still painted on the wall, they were there when I started in 1942, no gates or fences though, left handers couldn't be caught behind wicket. There is a grave just behind the nearest tree belonging to a local family who's son was killed at Rouke's Drift and his name is on the stone.
No.3 The local woods, notice how far I have walked. I excelled myself.
No. 4 It wouldn't be me if I didn't get a photo with something mechanical in it.
No.5 The pipe line in the background fed the boiler for Cockrofts mill from Copthurst dam, we used to shuffle across on our bottoms and when we got brave enough we would walk on it.
No. 6 Taken from the other side of the valley, the woods in the middle are where I took the last photo.
No. 7 Walsden water with the white cottage Margaret P used to visit in her younger days. The river was the original border between Lancashire and Yorkshire until 1889. Margaret's aunty's house is in Yorkshire, the river runs under a few houses and joins the Calder in Todmorden when once again the river was the boundary. I lived close by but by then it was all Yorkshire, the boundary shares the same boundary as the Borough of Todmorden,

No. 8, The last time I went up that lane I was riding a Triumph motorcycle sat backwards on the saddle. It was a favourite pastime for the local nutters ( I said it) They built a new road to by pass it many years ago and that is where I took the photo of the lorry.

I have a few more for later which I can post if the pants haven't already been bored off you.

ps, you may notice the electricity cables over head in some photos. It is still a novelty for the locals. They are still a bit wary of the TV, thinking maybe the people on the screen can see them. They always turn it off when they get undressed. I never had a TV when I lived there.

As much as I frown upon 'criminal behaviour' in this case the person(s) responsible get a thumbs up from me.
I believe councils want to make them card only machines in a bid to make them less of a target.

Unfortunately g, I don't think "honesty boxes" are as effective as they once were.
Perhaps if they put a sign up telling car park users what their money will be used for (toilets etc) then more people would be incline to contribute

The one i`ve been to a few times (Barley Green) does tell you that the money collected goes to the upkeep of the toilets. No doubt there will be plenty who don`t put there money in, but it`s probably unlikely to get set on fire.

Today in Pictures, Spring Wood, I don't know how many more times I will be able to visit this site as planning permission has been granted to make this a pay and display car park charging £1 a pop.

1. Stumps are fuel for other things, and drive the bio-diversity.
2. Usually they go about the business of fuelling the forest without much notice.
3. Cuckoo Pint shouting its colour tucked down in the long grass.
4. Ivy, trying to look like big trees.
5. Here I found a fork in the road..............space left so you can finish the joke.
6. Here are some big trees.
7. And some more big trees.
8. Here is a bench made of wood.......so you can sit and enjoy the woods.
9. A break in the canopy gives enough light for the taller weeds to made a dash for height, and dominance of the surroundings.
10. Right, time to head back down hill to the car park, wondering will the machines have taken over by my next visit.

All looking very green over there too.
What is it with this charging for parking in public places...it's already an expense to get there if you have to go by car. How do they think amenities will be used if they make them more and more expensive for people to use...
It's like the removal of "Common land" - that which as owned by all for the use of all...

It may be common land for the use of the people but the people who use it don't maintain it. Someone has to look after the toilets, fill the potholes in build that nice new bridge, keep the paths tidy and pick up the rubbish the visitors leave behind. That's where the small charge goes.
I agree, it would be nice if it was free but a quid is not bad.
I hope it doesn't stop you taking photos there Dave, I enjoy looking at places I haven't walked round although I have parked there a few times with June and fed the birds and then sat with a nice ice cream.

Personally, I take an exceptional dislike to paying out my hard earned cash in stealth taxes on my leisure time and (sometimes) refuse to comply with the 'rules'. I'm a bad boy and make no exuses for that fact, I simply hate being taken for a mug by those council leeches.

Councils are charging so much for parking that these ticket machines are a target for criminals and such so their now trying to make a lot of them card only machines......or is that just a scheme to keep the poorest folk (like me) away?

If I lived in Whalley, or Barley Green for example, I wouldn`t want my council tax paying for the upkeep of a car park that is mainly for the use of people from out of town.

Re: Today in pictures

There are three places due for ticket machines, I can't remember the third but two are Spring Wood and Wycoller.
This site and others are maintained by Lancashire County Council, plus volunteer groups, I already pay my dues and demands to L.C.C. for the maintenance of these things and the element is added to my council tax to be able to support all the projects they undertake.
So the question is do they have a right to add an extra levy to the people who support these facilities, having already paid. We are already taxed three times on our purchases, is this not another way to tax us into submission. For example I pay tax on my income, then I pay VAT when I buy diesel for the car, and the price of diesel has an element of fuel tax that determines the price, I pay Road tax to be able to have my vehicle on the road, now when I want to take some leisure time and get away from the hustle and bustle I am then taxed again to to leave my car in designated areas.
I for one do not think this is acceptable, and to repeat what I said originally, if this machine is installed I will no longer frequent this facility that already belongs to the public, as this is the only protest that I am able to make.
A side issue, a man makes a living selling tutti frutties from this area, his living is placed in peril if people stay away from the car park, has this man been given any consideration?

I remember, many moons back on one occasion someone seen me at the ticket machine and pulled up offering me their ticket which still had a hour or so left on it.
Nowadays I try to do the same for others (even if that means sticking my ticket to the ticket machine), Of course, this only works if it's the pay when you park system and not one of the pay when you go out at the barrier systems.
I'd rather get the money in copper change and skim them across the Res,pond etc than pay LCC.

Couldn't have put it better myself - charging folk a pound to park in a public area and then proposing to spend millions on a new bus station in Accrington - how does LCC work that one out?

Why Not?
The people who come in from out of town will often bring trade and business into those places(boosting the local economy). They may go and enjoy a pub lunch or visit somewhere that sells stuff produced locally........when places charge exorbitant fees, so that people from out of town have to pay, then sometimes it will put those people off.

Also these charges aren't just taken from the people from out of town, they are taken from everyone...including locals.
It seems to me that councils think that the driver is a very handy form of getting extra cash for their coffers.

Dave, do you have a bus pass? If so then you can still visit Cut Wood Park by getting on the bus.......it is free as long as you don't go before 9.30...and if you did want to go earlier, it is still only 50p.

That pub was built before the railway and was right in the path of the forthcoming construction of the bridge.
It was pulled down and rebuilt before 1842 and is very much the same today, apart from moving the communal loo outside to separate facilities for him and her indoors.
I still like to listen to the song "Four in the morning" sung by Faron Young which the landlady played when she wanted us out, usually at 4AM.

Picture number 2 is the little lane I walked up and down to school every weekday and Sunday morning for Church.
No. 3 That's the road that led to the lane.
By the looks if the over grown lane it seems the kids from the hills will be taken to and from the school in motor vehicles in this modern age.

The 2 and 3 were taken where the road ends and the lane starts, just enough room to turn my car around, you don't think I walked up there, did you?

Re: Today in pictures

If it was town centre car parks then i`d agree with you Margaret, but when it`s more isolated like the car parks here, then I don`t think the visitors will bring that much income into the local economy (except previously mentioned ice cream van)
I didn`t expect to get many agreeing with me, and don`t want to get into a heavy debate about it, it`s just my take on it. I keep a few pound coins in the car for car parks, if I don`t need them then that`s a bonus, but if I do then I`m OK with paying it.
I certainly wouldn`t miss out on going to places I like for the sake of a pound.

Margaret Pilkington 01-08-2014 10:21

Re: Today in pictures

I am not getting at you because of course you are entitled to your opinion and to voice that...just pointing out that these charges affect everyone... Although a pound may not seem very much, what Dave has said is true. We already pay for these areas through local taxes...and what starts off at a pound very often doesn't stay at a pound.

Places like Whalley and Barley and rural places like them, do depend on people coming in and spending money...even if it is only an ice cream or a cup of tea and a sticky bun.

I was walking up to see Ma this morning and he was on the path in front of me......he was very dozy and needed me to prod him(very gently) with the toe of my sandal a couple of times before he hopped off to the safety ofr the long grass.
Had he stayed where he was, he would have been walked on.

10. Right, time to head back down hill to the car park, wondering will the machines have taken over by my next visit.

Lovely woodland shots. About the charging for parking issue, over here we have Agreement Forests with free parking, and Conservation Areas with an Admittance Fee. It can get expensive ($7 each person or $12 maximum per car load of people if I'm not mistaken) or $129 a year. I tend to go on the off season anyway, when the honour box is working and I pay what I can. Fewer mozzies then too :)

I just think its the thin edge of a very big wedge, if they can charge me to visit something I already own in a collective fashion, then what follows, charging to go in the library, art galleries, parks, what about walking on the canal tow path, and don't get me started about paying to visit the sick in hospital. Dont roll over and just pay what they say, anyone who can say its only a pound has too much money, Spring Wood which started this subversive tax debate has a donation box for those that wish to support the site, and I bet some of those people that say pay for a ticket never put twopence in the box, deciding instead to keep their hand on their twopence. Right point made, back to business.

Today in Pictures, a wet walk down "t" cut.

1. Cut Lane as it goes over the canal, notice the "hump" that looks like a spoil pile.
2. The direction we are heading.
3. Our journey so far.
4. I'm just sitting watching flowers in the rain, hey...... that would make a good song.
5. A small oasis of habitation set in farmland.
6. Now that's a heavy duty barge.
7. Time to turn around.
8. A long gone railway, all that remains is the bridge that the trains went over and the underpass linking a farmer with his livestock. On a day like today, wet and still, you can hear the distant whistle of the steam train as it leaves our conciousness and heads for the only place it can be observed, photographs, and if you really strain the cerebellum you can still evoke the smells of steam, metal on metal, coal, and warm oil, with the merest hint of a Woodbine.

Well you are to be commended then, and if more people undertook to make a donation then we would not be placed in the position where we have to pay and display, a ticket machine takes away the option, you will pay or be fined.

It can be difficult visiting places that have memories attached, eventually when it doesn't hurt as much you may want to visit and smile at times gone bye, or you may never go again, either way is right for you.

Yes, it is a slippery slope, even over here. Most hospitals have exorbitant parking costs, so we are in effect paying to visit the sick. It's part of their funding formulae. I avoid parking there whenever possible, as we pay enough tax to support them, I think.

Its not easy parking off site, especially if there is a need to use the disabled parking, and at peak times queuing on the main road is possible, and getting onto the car park can involve waiting at the barrier until someone exits the site, and for this stress and strain you are charged almost £2, this was almost what I earned per week as an apprentice.

Wow. That's just not good enough for folk already in distress with sick and poorly relatives, or going in themselves for their own issues. I can see that I'm fortunate in where I live, there is usually a shopping mall with a huge parking lot fairly near to the hospital. A bit of a hike is ok, and so far the mall in question has turned a blind eye. It isn't always the case.

Unfortunately, the car park isn`t owned by the NHS (not 100%, but I don`t think the hospital building is either), even hospital staff get charged, and that amount is about to increase by approx 130%
