I think a photographic get together is a good idea, but what gets me to wondering is why when all the photographers on here are wandering about with gay abandon do we not bang into one another all the time.

I don't think that a better camera is always the answer.
Sometimes it is just being very lucky with the subject and having a good eye to capture it to the best advantage.

Today in Pictures is another of those yesterday in pictures posted today. A small mooch through the Dunkenhalgh Estate.

1. It was a cloudy, but still day, the silence only broken by the farmer mowing the field we were in.
2. This is Mill Woods, over the tree tops is the reservoir you can see from the road.(Hermitage Street)
3. Still Mill Woods, with the River Hyndburn meandering to the weir.
4. Its one of those pesky photographers.
5. Standing where the group were in the previous snap, looking back where the first pesky photographer was snapping the second pesky photographer.
6. Wading back to the shore, this is the same view but a tighter crop.
7. Devils Bridge.
8. The Dunkenhalgh Hotel is off to the right and up the hill.
9. Just a bit further along the wet bit.
10. Finally, a shot with my back to Devils Bridge.

I have had a look at the specs for what I think is your camera, is yours a 14 megapixel model.
If it is, then the model you have is absolutely okay, the maximum size we post pictures is 500kb so anything above that is discarded.
If you don't mind me asking a few cheeky questions it may help with why you are not getting the detail you are after.
Are you shooting on the auto setting?
Have you set a ISO setting?
And are you using an auto white balance setting?

Not a one, the farmer was mowing everything that was green so I suspect they had gone away to a field where they wouldn't be disturbed, I didn't see any wildlife at all come to think of it. Apart from the shoal of pigeons fleeing a shotgun.

I think my lens res is about 6.30 Mpixels....I do use the auto settings and don't set the ISO unless I'm doing light trails etc at night. I think it's down to lens quality why I'm losing the finer details.'

gpick24 12-10-2014 21:43

Today in pictures

You'll certainly get better results learning to use manual settings, as Dave said, with a file size limit of 500kb, any increase in mega-pixels will be lost anyway, that said, you can't beat a gadget upgrade.

Margaret Pilkington 12-10-2014 21:57

Re: Today in pictures

Yes, a gadget upgrade is always fun.....half of it is getting to grips with the new controls and doodads, but I think it is easy to lose sight of the skills involved in taking a good shot.

I think you and Dave have got some really great pics because of those skills.....you can see what makes a good shot.
Not that I am saying that others who contribute don't have good skills......they have.

I think it is too easy to get so competitive in who has the best equipment, it really isn't about that....or for that matter who has taken the best shot....because they are all good...they all fulfill the criteria of the thread.

Dave mentioned a few posts back that it is about taking a snapshot of your day...getting out and about with whatever camera you have and snapping something that captures what you have seen, or what you have been doing.

davemac 12-10-2014 21:59

Could I suggest, and I am not an expert, just enthusiastic, trying aperture priority (lower numbers for close up stuff and higher numbers for landscapes), using auto ISO, and setting white balance to cloudy or shade if you have it, unless it is very sunny.
I think the auto setting is fine for average conditions but too much light or dark and it over corrects losing detail as it does. Hope you don't mind me sticking my two pennyworth in, just trying to help.

It`s my own fault, I screwed up a while back. I tried to upload a photo to an album and hadn`t resized it. The upload failed (perhaps due to the upload speed at work) and the pic is stuck in a queue along with a couple of other pics i`ve tried uploading since, so now can`t enter the comps.

It seems to retain good quality shots when I've been out using it's macro function on plants/spiders webs etc just loses its detail over wider shots.

I shall be having a play with that. I, like many others(I guess) tend to leave the camera on automatic settings.
I think I should get a bit braver and do some experimenting.
After all it isn't like it used to be.....no film to buy, no developing costs either.

I sometimes look at pics taken with real good cameras; and I think to myself, "Self, get yourself one of those." Trouble is, there's too much "growing up poor just after the War, during rationing" in me. Too much old fashioned Lancashire thrift. If I don't really need something, I don't buy it. I wouldn't get pleasure out of it because there's that part of me, bred in the bone, that tells me not to waste brass on something I can easily do without. So I make do with what I have. If I knew I would use a camera (almost) every day, experimenting with features, and all that neat stuff, I would have one in a New York minute ... but ... if it would spend a lot of time gathering dust, or taking up space in my glove compartment ... then I can't justify it. However, I do get a lot of pleasure looking at the efforts, the creations, of others who are, let's say, more into it than I will ever be. So, keep up the good work, guys:D Oh ... and let's have more dog pics ... cats too ... and squirrels:alright:;)

The concept of a picture was a foreign thing to folk of early 19th century, folk didn't know how to behave in front of a camera. Pictures were 'posed for' like they would if they were getting a portrait.
It wasn't that long ago it's amazing to see how much taking pictures has developed.
Taking a pic today is so common, it's easily taken for granted by folk like me (click happy).
Times have certainly changed from when folk had stands with neck brasses to keep their head still, although the first 'selfie' was taken around 1840....

...,i wonder if folk are going to look back on my pics in say 100-150 years from now with the same level of curiosity as i do with vintage photo's. By that time my pictures will probably look faded and mysterious so it's possible.:D

Number 1 is gorgeous :)

Those pics have plenty of detail, but a few minor adjustments would improve them a lot. For example, the cat especially is a nice photo but just slightly over exposed, the white fur is too bright and detail in that part of the photo is lost, a slightly faster shutter speed, higher f-stop or lower iso and it would have been spot on (still no exif so can`t see your settings).

Tips like this are welcome - thanks gpick :)

Today in Pictures, Underneath the arches.

1. Martholme Lane, with a view over to Pendle Hill.
2. Once the tree gave out oxygen, now it feeds the fungi.
3. The bench installed in memory of Adrian Shurmer.
4. LISTEN........carefully......you can just hear the sound of a steam train from long ago.
5. And that's what they travelled on, sleepers, with rails as well, or it would have been very bumpy.
6. Then, once upon a time people travelled over that as well.
7. The River Calder as it leaves the viaduct behind.
8. I feel like Flanagan and Allen...........underneath the arches.
9. Martholme Viaduct, construction started in 1870 and finished in 1877, it has 10 arches that span the River Calder each span is 40 feet wide and the viaduct itself is 65 feet high, it is now a grade 2 listed building.
10. Now the walk back up the lane to the car, and a last look across to Pendle.

I rarely analyse pictures....either my own or anyone else's.
My motive for taking pictures is to capture the essence of that moment...to be relived again at some point in the future.

I take pictures from my heart.........I don't often consider the technicalities of a shot.
Maybe this is because my knowledge of the technicalities is pretty slim.
I know what I like though.......and even those pictures that could not be called technically skilled, have their own charm.....and they still have something to tell.

I would hate for anyone to be inhibited from taking shots because they felt they hadn't got the technicalities right.

That said, I too, am grateful for any hints and tips........and I have really had fun today with the DSLR simulator.........thank you G for putting that on here.

Eric, I can identify very strongly with your Lancashire thrift mentality.
I am the eldest of seven children, whereas himself is the youngest of three children.
He has never wanted for much in his life and cannot understand my thriftiness.

Birth order and circumstance make a difference, it's true. But we are all here doing the best we can. I really like your new 'tag line' Margaret ('Always be a little kinder...') it's something I have to remind myself of frequently.

Beautifully shot. What a fine thing you started here with this thread, Davemac. So many people from all over the globe, inspired to see their world a little differently, and share it with others :)

I hope my comments weren't seen as criticism, accyex wanted to improve on his pics, advising how to improve on something does inevitably mean being shown something that needs improving. It was a small point on a good photo that when looking into your cameras settings can be avoided...or shoot RAW and put it right later :D

When I was at pottery boot camp (Sheridan College 3 year program in Ceramics) we were introduced to the idea of the 'Crit' or critique. Our work was subjected to scrutiny by the instructor and all our peers in the class. At first it was hard to be vulnerable, but soon we came to recognize the value of other's opinions, even though our artistic vision was being critiqued. I see your input as being directed at technical issues, and not artistic ones. It's a different animal :)

It was something that someone else did on another thread that triggered a thought, that in turn started this thread, I did think at the time that perhaps I would be the only one putting pictures up on the site. Thankfully it became what it is today, and now has a life of its own and I can say with all honesty now belongs to all those who view and contribute. If you look at the stats for this thread it is among the highest views, also it is one of the only threads that is devoid of nasty negative comments. (I realise posting that comment will get a few jokers posting).

Constructive comments and criticism are always a good thing, none of us have all the solutions to problems. I would like to think if one of my pictures could be improved with a different viewpoint or a different setting then someone would say so, I wouldn't take the "hump" and I don't think anyone else would on here.

No, I hoped you would not take my comment as a criticism......I think most of us have 'upped our game' since this thread began.
I just wanted to make the comment that even those pictures which some might consider need 'tweaking'(and there is lots of post production stuff out there to do this with)they still have a validity and photographs are very subjective.

The more you know, the more you can see which could be improved.
For myself.....I shoot first and ask questions later.

Not had much opportunity the last few days so here are a few I took earlier this week or perhaps it was Sunday, that shows how busy I have been when I lose track of the days. A quick gust of Gatty Park.

There was blue sky so it must have been the weekend.....we haven't had much blue sky over the last couple of days......I know because my washing has languished indoors.

It was indeed Sunday, just checked the exif info, should have done that first but it never dawned on me.

The simplest solutions sometimes elude us.
The only reason I thought it was Sunday was, I got two lines of washing dry and put away before dark.....what a sad life I lead:)
