thank you for that info.
Expeditions have been firmly curtailed by things being done at the house....and dark nights also get in the way of my venturing out.
I am also pretty tied to routes that are available by bus......Hoghton tower was on my list last year, but things kept getting in the way......I will carry that one over to this years venturing.

I always take my phone, although if I did require the emergency services it may be difficult telling them where I am if I don't really know myself.

I am drawn to this area as it was the epicentre of quarrying for the area around Helmshore. It is littered with abandoned farmhouses, weavers cottages, workers cottages and other stone remains that sometimes are not apparent as to their real use. They all appear to be on old long gone cart tracks that spider web the area, some of the cart tracks end up at the top end of Oswaldtwistle so gives the impression that they were "A" roads of their time.

The sun was shining, and winter always looks better that way to me! I've been passing by these Sumac bushes almost daily, and normally they look to be a dull red colour. In the sun, however, they perk right up. Also, some more silliness with icicles. The last one is looking up from the bottom of one. No I didn't get right under it to do this, only the camera did  If you look closely, you'll see water droplets.

I think you have cornered the icicle market, nothing over here comes anywhere close, and I can tell something got wet.

Today in Pictures is a walk of mystery to me, but I had a guide.

1. Starting on Old Coal Staithe, there must be a story attached to that name, but it is the lane down to Read Garden Centre, we headed in the direction of Read Hall.
2. Entering what would have been the estate attached to the hall we headed for the hall.
3.I think the area is now called Read Hall Park.
4. The trees now provide shade and shelter for the sheep.
5. The sun is low in the sky, and watery, even my sun has a moisture content.
6. At this point we have taken a left turn and are heading in the direction of the Old Roman Road.
7. Great Harwood is centre left, and the trees in the distance are Dean Clough.
8. We reach the Roman Road, have a bit of a paddle in a tributary to the calder, it enters the Calder on Old Coal Staithe.
9. We are heading back now down through Read Hall Park.
10. And back down the lane to the car. Next time we come this way we will head in the direction of the viaduct as I have never seen the other side.

Today in Pictures, with low lying cloud sitting over the region for 24 hours I thought I would head to the cemetery to get some moody, misty shots of the church and headstones, got there using headlights and fog lights, arrived, not a mist or moody shot to be had, the only place in the region cloud free, Ood a thowt it.

1. Most of todays' pictures will be facing in the same direction.
2. That's as misty as it gets.
3. Looking out from the church.
4. There is a slight mist around the pylons, almost making them vanish.
5. Wet knees a go-go.
6. Heading back down the perimeter wall.
7.There are a million stories in this cemetery, that headstone belongs to a family from Peel Park Gardens.
8. Todays' headstones are not a patch on Victorian ones.
9. Although the lack of maintenance makes them susceptible to gravity.
10. I am sure they are supposed to be "G's" but they do look like "C's"

Today in Pictures, setting off up plantation Road I didn't realise how I would be drawn into the history of the area, or realise how complex the area was.

1. All that remains of the once proud Arden Hall, built in 1846 for Benjamin Hargreaves.
2. Up thill, Plantation Road, the longest un restored cobbled (stone setts) road in England.
3. The rear entrance pillars to Plantation House occupied by William Denham Grimshaw.
4. To the rear of Plantation House, all that remains of the service buildings and the greenhouse complex.
5. The stream that once powered the 36' waterwheel(one of two) that provided power into the mill complex. Higher up it was sluiced to provide constant water.
6. This is the water that flowed from the 4 reservoirs, it provided the water to undertake the calico printing.
7. The waterfall still provides a useful amount of water.
8. This building is within sight of the waterwheels and there is a small lodge behind, so I am guessing it had something to do with the water supply.
9. Here is where the water enters the mill area to be put to use.
10. Here is the top of the gate post that once stood on the road through the mill complex. There is one either side of the path and gives some idea how much the land has been filled in.

This film is local history walk around the area by Lee Aaron and Mike Dickinson, I should have watched this before I went on my travels, it would have made more sense of the area.

I wasn't able to watch the video from your link, but found it on YouTube directly. It was nice to learn a bit about Benjamin Hargreaves school, as I went there as a youngster.

I always enjoy seeing evidence of Accrington's industrial past in your photos. It's great to have some perspective given as to what the half buried and decayed objects once were :)

I didn't intend to get so caught up in the history but all the indications of grand houses that remained set me off on a quest. In the late 18th century and early 19th the area must have been awash with mill owners houses and the mills themselves. Having watched the video when I got home, I had walked most of the areas covered, and a few more, and noticed the remnants of styles and gas lamp bases but without knowing what they were when I was there.
The information that there were two 36' waterwheels powering the mill complex was new to me, so next time I go I will look for the evidence.

Plantation Road is one of Acrington's most famous roads, during the 19th century it was home to two families of the era (Hargreaves and Grimshaw)..
Between them i think they employed 50-60% of the working population in the printing and cotton industries.
The last person to live at Arden Hall was Alderman Bury,a former Mayor of Accrington.I believe they had a Archaeological Dig around that area too.

Since I was last up there they have put footpaths through the area, and on the side of plantation house as well. If you go off piste there are piles of stones all around the area where they just dropped the houses and buildings.

Today in Pictures, I am not totaly sure where I am, nothing new there then I here you say, however it was a tad close to Green Haworth, and Priestly Clough in equal distance.

1. An old cart track that when I was a lad went down to Priestly clough over the railway bridge and onto Hollins Lane.
2. Same track, further up and facing the other way, the Coppice is off to the right.
3. As we head up the track Baxenden is off to the right.
4. Looking across to the other side, this track used to go up the other side until a mad farmer knocked the bridge down that goes through Priestly clough. (allegedly) .
5. Decisions decisions.
6. Visible from many areas around town, but never really noticed.
7. A row of cottages so far from the road you would not know they were here, I didn't.
8. Far to many windows for it to be just a barn.
9. Plus the number and size of the doors suggest to me possible farm hand accommodation.
10. Final shot, then its back down the way we came.

Hey ... guess what .... more snow:eek: Again, random, unplanned, un-aimed shots ... I'm too cold, too shoveled out, and too p.o.'d. Good new is: it's a tad warmer. Bad news is: following the low that brought the snow is another Arctic front. Down to -25+ tonite.:alright:

Today in Pictures started off from Read Hall again, but this time through the buildings complex and out the other side.

1. Up the main drive to the Hall, now separately owned buildings.
2. With the buildings behind me a look back down the drive.
3. Through the estate and out the other side brings us to Old Roman Road..
4. We are now dropping down in the vicinity of Sabden.
5. Looking in the direction of the Nab.
6. There's always a wet bit.
7. This stream is sourced back to the overflow from Churn Clough Reservoir and the streams that filter off Pendle Hill.
8. Looking at the erosion of the banking it must get a large amount of water flowing down when its at capacity.
9. Then as we headed up the next hill to Whalley these came over to see what we were doing.
10. Then as the sun was skimming the horizon we dropped down to Spring Wood

Left the car on the Black Abbey car park last night so a misty walk back to get it this morning over Whinney Hill and the Coppice.

Hambledon and the Coppice in the morning mist.
Huncoat railway crossing and station.
The Railway pub (Atarah sowed the seeds by telling me the Blockade was being demolished this week)
The Black Bull
The White Bull not a pub any more but a magnificent building.
Griffins Head.
One of the 3 Lodges, to think we swam in there as kids !!
The bridge over the Pleck Ravine.
Pleck Ravine.
The cobbles on Plantation Road down past Arden Hall. Is there a longer or finer stretch of cobble sets remaining in the town?
Back to the Abbey (looks better outside than in)

"see next post for the last 2 pics"

Today in Pictures, should have been a quick once around the wet bit, but I got distracted again.

1. Driving down to Foxhill Bank I was drawn to this street, I have photographed it before but the cobbles draw me back.
2. Straight to the wet bit.
3. This is the point I went off piste, the people that wore away the steps on their way to Foxhill Mill are long gone as is the Mill.
4. Foxhill Bank House, there is little that remains that gives any sense of its former glory, or the famous people that visited it.
5. This should have been a standard railway bridge, but it was beautified so that the mill owners that had to pass under it with their horse and carriage had something a bit posher than the norm, notice the terracotta columns and recesses whose use escapes people.
6. Mooching around the site that was once Foxhill House very little remains apart from piles of stones and the odd random wall that is more likely to be service buildings.
7. Back to the wet bit.
8. There doesnt appear to be the numbers of water birds that I observed on other visits.
9. This is the most visited part of the nature reserve, with a steady stream of mums and dads with kids and a bag of bread bits.
10. The second reservoir, both were used to feed the mill, this section of the reserve is not as easily accessed as the other. There is in the distance a metal mound that was installed to entice Kingfishers to nest, I have never seen one here so don't know if it worked.

Nay Frank too much effort involved in lifting them, the members of the err "travelling community" look for easier pickings.
Not that I am suggesting the men in white vans and transit pick-ups running on red diesel are all "tea leafs"
I alway chuckle when I drive past the Whinny Hill site with this red post box at the entrance, even if it is "retro" as I suspect, it is still cast iron and if it was anywhere else in the borough it would be long gone and remelted and cast agin' as a manhole cover to replace those that mysteriously disappear in the night.
(A bit like some of my posts on here)

Today in Pictures, a walk on the slopes between Musbury Heights and Calf Hey Reservoir.

1. A long forgotten graveyard, last internments were in the late 1800's and no evidence of anyone caring for the site.
2. Finally making the slopes, vanishing evidence that a road was once here dotted with buildings, now just piles of stones covered in grass and moss.
3. One of the many streams that percolate their way down to the reservoir.
4. Another of those many streams heading for the reservoir, how am I going to get down there from up this tree.
5. BANG.
6. Yet another wet bit heading down hill, some wall that's use is now history.
7. Peppered around are the posts that say this was an entrance to some hamlet or other.
8. Same stream as in 6 but a bit further down stream.
9. This is the point the stream enters the channels that filter the water either into the reservoir or past it if there is enough water in the res.
10. Now up the other side and past the preserved foundations of farming and weaving communities.

Nothing special, more learning the shutter speeds and exposure settings because I bought a tripod.I could never hold it still enough for the pictures not to be blurred beforehand.

It was a nice day, the sun was shining, it was one of those outings that I enjoyed more than some others despite all that scrambling up and down the slopes.

you must be getting serious if you have bought a tripod.

I found that carting a tripod around was a bit too much like hard work so I bought a monopod which can double as a walking pole.
A tip for accyexplorer regarding playing around with exposure or shutter speeds. Have a look at the camera instruction book to see how to set it up for bracketing, that way you can compare three or five pictures taken at the same time with one press of the shutter each with slightly different exposures.

Hope I'm not teaching my granny to suck eggs !

Not at all G, as a greenhorn, any and all advice Re photography is much appreciated.

I think I've got the hang of it now,if it's dark when taking a pic the iso needs to be higher and vice versa. However, it would be good to be able to choose from a set of different exposures rather than having to take seperate shots.
I'm not sure if my (bridge) camera is fancy enough to have that feature though I'll have to have a read later....cheers :)

These photographs are a very simple example of bracketing. One click, five photographs all slightly different exposures.
I set it on a low setting but I could have had the same photo range from dark to very bright.
The middle photo was the one I set the camera for and the others were two over and two under exposed.
The plate was given to my mother in 1938 by her mother. My mum died in 1948 and is one of only two things of hers I posses, apart from lots of photos.

Nice vintage plate, is it converted to be wall mounted?
fruit was on everything from wallpaper to plates in that era.
I want to get experience in "light trails/painting" as I've come across quite a few amazing pics using this technique with burning wire wool being a particular favourite of mine.
