Yesterday in Pictures, fossicking around the Coppice.

1. This hill gets steeper as I get older, so we are going off to the right.
2. Were gonna need a bigger coat.
3. The needles of the Larch are now yellow and falling to the floor.
4. The third reservoir down from the top, looking toward Moleside.
5. This is the fourth reservoir, from here it fed into Plantation Mill.
6. It now flows away from the area without having powered a thing.
7. Accy in the distance.
8. One of the newer paths that traverse the slopes.
9. This path has been here for a while, just a new surface.
10. This once hard to find red jobbie (Amanita muscaria) now peppers the slopes of the Coppice, I found 5 different clumps without much fossicking, I can only guess that all the recent activity around the area has proved beneficial to this variety.

Still playing catch up, another batch from yesterday.

1. Starting at Altham Lane and heading along the canal.
2. Despite the low temperatures during the night flowers are still giving it one last push.
3. Not sure if this is a boat yard or just a selection of moorings, but there is a woman to the left of the lifeboat sweeping leaves up, I just thought King Canute.
4. Still on the waters edge looking across to Pendle Hill.
5. Another lost community, this is a set of buildings with a wall all the way around, and a road also walled that goes up to the canal.
6. Two buildings that look to have its own gate posts.
7. This is the perimeter wall, the buildings look to be either side of a storage area, it doesn't look big enough to be a barn.
8. The view must have been spectacular as those trees either wouldn't be there or not as tall as they are now.
9. The other side of the wall that was along the edge of the road.
10. Finally, time to head back, the white building in the first shot is also in the last.

The white building is usually where we start and finish our canal walk.

I have no explanation either, just that some strange craft appear there for a while then are replaced by something just as strange.

A mixed bag from walks a few days back - we've been kept in by driving rain since. Final shot is of a fresh-water crayfish which came acorss behind my recycling bins yesterday where it was feeding on worms that had come out with the heavy rains. He was quite an agressive creature and gave me a bit of a fright!

Off to Cremona shortly, on a wet and wild afternoon, where this exhibition of photography is showing at the Violin Museum. Looks like there will be some great photos - all B&W -photojournalism - a bit of photo-culture!

Today in Pictures is almost every photo from the same spot, well almost.

1. Its difficult to find a different way to photograph a spot you have traversed so many times before.
2. Its just the Autumn colours that make the difference.
3. The edge of the woodlands that run along the edge of Wilson's Playing Field.
4. Pilkington Bridge.
5. All that remains of Doctor Lovelace floating soap factory, its not the factory that floated, it was the soap.
6. With that, just around the bend and home, today is the BIG SHOP day. I'm so excited I may just run.

Was planning to post yesterday's rainy pics around Cremona taken when I went to see the excellent photography exhibition at the museum. Todays pics are better and quite unexpected, I donned my wellies and risked my life to bring them to you ;):D.
All the heavy rain recently has battered the North of Italy causing widespread flooding. Bit of respite today but more heavy rain is on it's way so we are on alert. We are quite lucky here as we are just far enough away from The Po but our local river, The Morbasco, just up the lane has burst it's banks so my usual walk will be off the cards for a while as you will see!

Number 8 shows the old bridge behind the farm completely submerged.

It has been bucketing down for days but last night's rain was particularly intense. The North of Italy has been really hammered - many rivers have flooded and there have been some deaths as a result :(

We are luckily on the protected side of this small river but it has caused some havoc in Cremona with basements flooding in some areas...

Have had a bit of a magic mushroom day :D Spotted some on a verge near home and found loads of different kinds when I went to investigate. I think Dave would have been in his element. Donna Nook National Nature Reserve | Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust
on the way there I went past RAF Waddington.

1. Surprised how close this is kept to the road.
2. First Seal pup.
3. Keeping cool.
4. Having a cuddle.
5-7. Guessing this one hasn`t been born long, still has part of it`s umbilical cord.
8. With mum.
9. Two mums arguing.
10. Yet another pup.

Number 8 catches a real bonding moment but I love 3 (comic) and 4 (very human) too! Lovely photos. They took me back to when aged 12 we visited a seal sanctuary down in Cornwall - I bought a cuddly toy seal which stayed on my bed until the day I got married! Knowing my mum it probably disappeaed soon after in one of her famous clear-outs.

Today in Pictures, a tootle around Spring Wood.

1. If your gonna have a photo of fungi, its good to start with a big-un.
2. And then one that's hiding.
3. Its the same every year, you just get used to seeing them green and up a tree, then in a flash they are brown and on the ground.
4. Its very peaceful, you would hardly know its so close to Accrington Road.
5. The carpet of leaves appears to go on forever.
6. Looking over the top of Whalley toward Longridge Fell.
7. A cheeky little fungi showing its gills.
8. Another view of Whalley, well sort of.
9. We are trundling down the other side now.
10. And almost back at the car park.

Today in Pictures, a mash up of two days, one in Memorial park, the second, today, Milnshaw Park.

1. You just know at some stage you are going to get wet.
2. A little woods off to the right.
3. No one around, so down on the floor, well I thought there was no one around, there was.
4. Heading back out to the open spaces.
5. And here it is, looking down the park.
6. Hagg Lodge, I never walk past without taking a reflective shot.
7. Looking over the top of the bowling green, in the distance the turbines.
8. A trunk full of Trametes.
9. Another day at the Beech.
10. And finally back at Hagg Lodge.

Cremona is famous for it's nougat production Dave and claims to be the place where it was invented - along with Montelimar in France!

"Cremona, 25th of October 1441: Bianca Maria Visconti married Francesco Sforza. The wedding, which allowed Sforza family to dominate the Duchy of Milan for over half a century, is strictly related to the birth of nougat. According to the legend nougat was made for the first time in occasion of the wedding feast and it had the shape of the Torrazzo, the bell tower of Cremona cathedral. It can be stated that “torrone”, the Italian word for nougat, etymologically derives from “Torrazzo”."

The festival will finish next Sunday with a re-evocation of Bianca-Maria's wedding in the cathedral sqaure -I hope to go along to see it and get a few more pics!

After yesterday's excursion to the Nougat Festival in Cremona and a nice lunch out I went on a country walk - meeting a shepherd and shepherdess from Val Camonica who spend their winters grazing their flock of 1000 sheep on the plains, the rest of the year they are up in The Alps. I had met them before for a chat a few weeks ago and saw them last year too when we were moving house...got some nice photos. He is 23 and she is 20, they have 5 dogs ( 3 are pups who are learning) and a number of donkeys who they use for transporting the new-born lambs and leading the flock - the dominant donkey has a bell and they all follow!

Today in Pictures, its getting to that time of year when you go out in the sunshine and the sun starts to go down if you start faffing and lose track of time.

1.This location always has a few fungi.
2. They are usually on the edge as the center is a bit on the dark side.
3. I spy with my little eye something beginning with T.
4. I said it gets a bit dark inside the woods.
5. That's the wet bit we are heading for.
6. Pendle in the distance, with heavy clouds.
7. The dense clouds are reflecting the sun as it sits low in the sky.
8. Although the clouds are of a dense nature they are moving at speed so the colours are changing.
9. Time to head back to the car before we lose the light.
10. Getting back to the car the sky was on fire, if I had more time I would have moved position to find a better foreground.

I wouldn't trust my ability to get it right, I have read that most of the fungi we come across are edible, but the poisonous ones are similar looking to edible ones, so I keep away. On the plus side I am glad other people don't pick them either as they are my photographic subjects.

8. Although the clouds are of a dense nature they are moving at speed so the colours are changing.
9. Time to head back to the car before we lose the light.
10. Getting back to the car the sky was on fire, if I had more time I would have moved position to find a better foreground.

Some real stunners there, davemac! Thank you :)

Thanks, I wasn't intending to stop out as long as I did, it was two and a half hours before I got home, but the next subject, then the next kept me out there. Then the light started to go and the sun changed the colours of the sky. I was heading home when the sky went bright red,I would have done another hour if I wasn't supposed to be somewhere else.

You were there, engaged with your surroundings. And captured beauty. That's art. :)

As Charley Partanna said: "Art who"?;)

But more seriously: you might enjoy "The Art Instinct: Beauty, Pleasure, and Human Evolution." (Denis Dutton.) It suggests possible reasons why so many of us enjoy "Today in pictures."

Re: Today in pictures

Thank you, Eric. I haven't read Dutton's book, but found some descriptions and reviews on line. His notion that our appreciation of art stems from our cave-dwelling ancestors is interesting.
I've long been skeptical of academics, and their notion that artists are godlike creatures that have something we 'common folk' don't have. That kind of snobbery makes my blood boil. So Dutton's ideas have some appeal for me!
I prefer to maintain my personal definition of art close to heart: I see, I react, I express how I feel about it, I share with others. Isn't that what we're trying to do in this thread? Maybe. Room for discussion I think :)

There's always room for discussion ... and you could consider that your "personal definition" isn't really all that "personal" ... and, like a fear of heights, or snakes, or turtles, it certainly isn't unique.;)

I bumped into them again yesterday afternoon as they have moved behind our farm now - they moved the flock in driving rain the day before and I felt guily about being inside in the warm. They live quite basically but also both have an I-pads as they have asked me send them my photos. A few more of them in today's selection of funghi which I'm about to post...more of the donkey for Margaret too ;)

Another walk on a beautiful sunny day which came after one of driving rain - plenty of funghi around including another stinkhorn - they really do stink!

Last 4 of the herd and shepherd's - the drawing on the door of their caravan of a donkey was executed by Luca it says " Shepherd is not a job it's a way of life" the word Pastore is Shepherd it's written on the back of their caravan to warn drivers when they are moving the flock with the jeep on long road stretches. The shepherdess is called Gabriella.

There are still quite a lot of wild flowers around over here too because of the mild weather this autumn. Some nice splashes of colour there and number 7 is a really interesting composition.

As you said the word Pastore is shepherd. I wondered why border collies are classed as pastorial.

Today in Pictures, yesterday around Huncoat Pit, today around the woods to the rear of Wilson's Playing Field and toward the bottom of Bell Lanes.

1. This area when it was a pit was used to store the coal, it was off to the right, the train line followed roughly the footpath you see, and some of it appears to have a base of the fill used between the sleepers. Roughly where I am standing was a lever that diverted the trains onto a second line that went off to the left of where I am.
2. Pendle Hill, it dominates the area.
3. A quick visit to the teazel fields, used in the 19th century to clean, align and raise the nap on fabrics, especially wool. They were inserted into rotating teazel frames.
4. Looking down the site, top right is Whinney Hill.
5. Looking across the site from the once busy railway line, looking across the M65, to the left is dean clough, following it right is Whalley Nab, and in the mist you can just see Longridge Fell.
6. Now to the woods, this stream skirts the edge of the site, I have no idea if it has a name but must eventually feed into the River Hyndburn as that is its direction.
7. The priests walk, once paved to keep the clothes of the clergy clean from the mud as he went between his two churches. For the most part the flags have long since been purloined for other uses, just a small section remains as it passes Wilson's Playing Field.
8. 9. & 10 big brown Beech trees as they skirt the farmers fields off to the right.

Today in Pictures, a site I have not visited for some time, not a big site but on a clear day the views are worth the visit.

1. Thats a nice bit of fencing.
2. Once a busy opening, one entrance to Top O'Slate quarry.
3. A dusky and overcast day.
4. You wouldnt get me up in one of those.
5. A place to stand and take in the view.
6. You are either going up hill or down hill around here.
7. If I could just sit with you a while-If you could just hold me.............(Dennis Jernigan).
8. L.S. Lowry once said....I saw the industrial scene and I was affected by it.........................
9. Time to get going, things to do.
10. On the way home in heavy traffic I noticed this off to the left, and had to stop to soak up the fiery sky.....I managed a few shots but time was passing and had to be elsewhere.....turning back to the line of traffic I noticed that no one was looking at it. It was invisible to them as they stared at the exhaust pipe of the car in front and staying as close as they could so no one would steal their place.

1. Turn the fan on will you.
2. I dont know where the water comes from, but the level never seems to change.
3. This is the rock that helped build the town and pave the streets.
4. Stone from times past and windmills of tomorrow.
5. There are 6 in these fields, thats half the number that cover Oswaldtwistle Moor.
6. The old firing range, these are the mechanisms that were used to hoist the targets into the air.
7. Looking in the direction of "Accy".
8. The farmhouse in the first picture, this time under heavy clouds.
9. And finally Accrington bathing in the last rays of the sun.

Numbers 2 and 3 do it for me. I prefer to see landscapes without the windmills, but can appreciate the need for 'green' power. The use of windmills is controversial here too.

Really lovely - thank you! The weather here in southern Ontario has been topsy turvey this week. Minus 12 and snow one minute, and plus 12 degrees with dangerous winds at the moment. Your Lancashire landscapes are a joy to behold :)

I rather like the windmills (turbines), close up I find them impresive, and I have been right up to them on "Ossy" moors, although they do tend to dominate the skyline around here.

The forcast here is to take a turn for the worst, they say wet stormy weather is heading this way, but it never reaches the extremes you seem to have to live with.

I've been busy lately spearheading the Christmas sale for my local artisan's group, so haven't posted any pics for a while. It's all over with now, thank goodness, and life can get back to normal! :alright:

Here are a couple of shots from the sale just before we let the public in, and a couple off my balcony to show the first snowfall of the year so far.

The snow has all gone now, but it's grey, damp and cold. More white stuff to come before too long - just glad I don't live in Buffalo USA, only a few hours south of me. They had over 7 feet of snow in a record short time, poor beggars!

Today in Pictures, I woke up this morning and found someone had replaced my nose with a big red bugle, my lungs with a set of leather bellows, and a wheeze that sounds like a seagull is following me.
