Lovely bluebells again. The stand of trees up above the reservoir looks like the one you could see in the distance from the kitchen window of our old house on Cranbourne Drive. There was a gap in the terraces on Dill Hall Lane behind it and you could see across the allotments and fields and up onto the hill beyond. Pretty sure it's there! :)

Could be the same, the pine trees to the right are the woods I walk through to get down to Dean Clough reservoir, and are visible from most of the high parts of the borough.

I had a drive to Walsden today to see my sister and thought I would take a photo of Stile House for Moberto.

The first 4 were taken through the windscreen. I admit to being lazy.

1 Stile House
2 Looking back down from Stile House.
3 The old factory house up Meadow Bottom Road
4 Coming back down Meadow Bottom.
5 Cliviger from Deerplay
6 looking further down the Todmorden Valley from Deerplay
7 The Cliviger Wind turbines from Deerplay
8 Burnley from Deerplay

9 & 10 Flora stuff for the nature lovers.

No wet knickers for me Dave.

Today in Pictures, an early start and a late finish, I hope I get overtime for all this.

1. Parked up and off to the left.
2. From here you can see the Coppice, Moleside, and Hameldon.
3. Thats the blunt end of "Ossy" moors, the bit that looks down on Haslingden.
4. Can you tell where I am yet. (The Halo, Haslingden.)
5. Gazing down the valley, you can just see Manchester in the distance.
6. Hours later I'm skipping through the woodlands.
7.Its still a poor show for the bluebells.
8. That gate was the turnaround point.
9. Down the slope to the car.
10. Here we are back on the path out of Hameldon woods.

Lovely photo of the house Russell, thank you so much, how thoughtful of you. There was a huge tree in front, to the left, which they had to have removed for safety reasons about 15 years ago. Nice view down into Tod from there- gives some idea just how steep it is to get up there. :)

As promised, a few photos from the 40's weekend on the East Lancs Railway.
I found it hard to make up my mind to go, me and my late wife were regulars on the East Lancs Railway and a lot of the staff knew us through taking the guide dog puppies there, one or two asked where she was which was very upsetting for me.
One consolation was I got to ride up and down for nothing as I still have a few complimentary tickets we had given.

The two ladies saw my point my camera through the carriage window and obliged with a wave.

Photo 1 was taken at Bury and photo 6 at Ramsbottom, both very good singers who were singing the old war time favourites.

I took a lot more photographs but I have posted my quota for today.

Wow I would have loved to have been there and have a chance to wear my fox fur!! What a lot of work must have gone into it all.

Russell I'm glad you plucked up your courage to go, that's another step along the road for you. Keep at it, sorry I haven't been in touch but I haven't been too good myself as you will see if you read my thread in Anything Goes.

Today in Pictures, A walk I thought would only be about an hour turned into over two, and even then I didn't cover all the area. More of a surprise was that I didn't know it was here, and how big an area it covered.

1. Start point, the signal box at Huncoat.
2. A left turn takes you into the Colliery site.
3. Some fragments of buildings remain, but not enough to say what they were.
4. Taking a right turn over a style, it opens up to huge area.
5. Wild flowers abound.
6. Not many Buttercups though.
7. Grass seed heads, I have no idea what variety.
8. Mayflowers.
9. I found a wooded stream.
10. A hidden gem, that requires a return visit.

I have used my allocation for today, so as I will be busy for the next two days will post the remainder then, the stream and beyond. (check the panoramic thread for a few more)

Nice action photos shillelagh, I missed the re enactment on Sunday PM, my train got into Rawtenstall just after they had cleaned the track up and the soldiers disbanded.

I really had a good day out at Bury, Ramsbottom and back to Rawtenstall where my car was parked.
The entertainment on the platforms at Bury and Rawtenstall with people joining in the songs was really good. As my train pulled out they all waved and sang "Wish me luck as you wave me goodbye".

Got my bike back today and rode over to the other side of Castelverde to Regione Fornace where there are some beautiful old mill houses. There's a view to Cremona (about 2.5km as the crow flies) where the tall tower you can see is right in the center of town. All the other shots show the mill house area. They have an interesting collection of old agricultural machinery, a restored gun from WW2 and one of the old mill wheels in the gardens of the mill. My son has been inside as his friend's girlfriend lives there -he told me the old millstones are inside the house as a feature.

Beautiful close-ups of the flowers -it's all looking lovely and green now. Look forward to seeing some more shots of the Woodlands if GPick gets there with his dogs and camera ;)

I have happy memories of the Woodlands as I often got a "Get out of School free" card at junior school (St Mary's) as my best friend Andrea had terrible hayfever and this time of year she often got sent home and I had to accompany her -we lingered in the Woodlands on our way to her house despite the hayfever!! :D

There are two sections to the woodlands, the official woodlands area that runs alongside Whalley Road. It contains the stone, and wood carvings, and the paths are tarmaced. Then there is the wooded area that runs around the outside of Wilson's Playing Field, you can walk all around the playing field keeping to the woods and end up back at the start point. So it can be a bigger walk than you would think at the start point.

Yesterday evening saw the start of the annual Literature/Music festival in Cremona which will be on all weekend. The weather stayed fine after a stormy week and the following are a series of photos showing the event. The festival is called Le Corde dell'anima -which means "The Chords of the Soul" and combines literature with music.

I did get up there, but it`s so difficult to get decent pics when one of them just doesn`t stop still for more than a couple of seconds and the other always has his tongue hanging out, but here are the best of the ones I took today. The last one wasn`t in the woodlands, it was on the way home past rishton waterfalls.

We`ve had one of them as well, was a great combination, collies are so clever, and springers will just go anywhere, no matter how muddy or prickly.

Re: Today in pictures

Good to see the photos of the woodlands. When I was growing up the area was all grass right over to Bell lane and there were four football pitches and a cricket pitch, when we played on them we were in the Accy combination it cost us eleven shillings a game paid to the council. There was also a large pond down in the field with large trees all around.
Before the council owned it I think it belonged to the miners and there was a very large wooden building which was later used for players changing. I would have been about six when my Mother and Dad went there every Saturday night for dancing and drinking and a good social evening out. Three full size snooker tables and at the back of the building two bowling greens. That was when people new how to enjoy there selves, Happy Days still remembered.

The setting is inspirational

Their names are Daisy ( the hyperactice one ) and Duke ( Fathead ), can`t believe I got that shot of the cricketer , only took four pics of that game and I got him being bowled out.

A series of shots around the side streets of Cremona -mostly round the back of the Cathedral. Final one shows an mid-1800's factory which is just outside the center and has been preserved -could almost be in Accrington with the red-brick and chimneys!

More of the center of town and the festival tomorrow...

Those narrow streets are more than interesting, I would be there for hours, days, snapping them, especially when the street lights are on.

Yes it is. We got Daisy first, she already had that name and we kept it. When we got Duke, it seemed a good name for him.

I love all the pastel-coloured buildings and the way they are all individual and slightly different in height etc. All those streets are just behind the Cathedral.

1. The cherry blossom is just going over now.
2. The bowling green.
3. The Rhododendrons are taking over as the flower of the moment.
4. And close up they are very delicate looking.
5. Its a weed, but very striking.
6. Chives are starting to bloom.
7. Its a baby strawberry.
8. The museum, I don't know whats in, its closed when I visit the park.
9. The Bluebells are at full tilt, so enjoy before they have gone.
10. Pinkbells are not as scarce as I thought, but you have to look hard to find them among the blue ones.

My day in pictures is not very exciting.
Starting with a trip to Rivington Barn, a place I have never been before, where there were hundreds of motorcyclists coming and going.

Then on the way back a quick trip to Houghton Towers which was closed.
Onwards to Riley Green marina, not much doing so I took a photo of a bush by the canal side and a radio mast I could see through the trees.

Back home and a quick snap of the windturbines.
Then after a quick brew I decided to take a picture of a flower to show the people who bought the plant that I am looking after it. Anybody tell me what it is?

I passed away what would have been a dull day.

Thanks for the information on the plant Susie.
Some friends bought it for my late wife's birthday last June and the kind lady who does the gardening for me took it to her greenhouse for the winter.

I bought a Fuschia recently from a gypsy lady knocking on my door. Have never had one before and they are quite delicate plants but with beautiful flowers. That's a lovely close-up of the flower...

More photos from around the center of Cremona during this weekends festival. The first 4 are taken at the recently opened Violin Museum in Piazza Marconi. The lady in pink playing a violin is American crime novelist Tess Gerritsen. The next 4 are some feaures of Cortile Federico II (a little courtyard in the Town Hall): statue of Antonio Stradivari, Visconti Coat of arms showing the black serpent, Water fountain and the side passage with frescoes. The last 2 pics are in Piazza del Duomo first the student assistents at the festival looking like they're sitting on a bus! Last, I treated myself to an iced coffee at the Bar dei Portici while listening to a soprano on the main stage. (I am such a culture vulture! ;) :D )

I think it is a case of once you see one you then see them all over the place, I have spotted them in Padiham, Rawtenstall, and Rishton.

I think you're right Dave, most people walk round oblivious to what's above eye-level - you also never really appreciate what you see on a daily basis either. The courtyard has a walkway like that around every side and they are full of frescoes, commemorative plaques, statues and other features which have been applied over the years. The Town Hall is built around this courtyard and it was completed in 1206 so plenty of time for things to have been added. The cathedral across the square was completed 99 yrs earlier in 1107!!!
Unfortunately some additions are not wanted -like the grafitti you can see in this link...Imbrattati i muri del Comune in Cortile Federico II - Cremona Oggi - Libero 24x7
The man in the photo was caught on the cctv cameras...
This is a good photo showing what the courtyard is like - through the arches you can see the white marble face of the cathedral across the square. Risultato della ricerca immagini di Google per http://www.giuseppenicoloro.com/wordpress/wp-content/main/2012_06/NIK_0293.jpg

Looking at Dave's excellent pictures made me think of taking a few flora and fauna in my garden.
Honestly I don't know a flower from a weed and June and her gardener planned it all.
June wanted a little rough corner so the hedgehogs and other wild beasties could have a nice haven and she also wanted a little rockery.
I am determined to keep it nice in June's memory and with the help of Kate the gardener I will do.

It really is a nice tribute to your wife -what a lovely big garden. The photo of the tulips and the fuschia buds are lovely close-ups. Even though I don't like insects -the photo of the fly is very clever.

Thanks Dianne, Just over two years ago when the bungalow was built the "garden" was just builders rubble with a bit of turf thrown on it.
June and Kate worked wonders with it.

I was walking along the canal bank and heard this almighty splashing as a swan was running along the water surface to pick up speed for take off. I just managed to whip my camera round quick as it looked as though it was going to hit our heads. The Heron obliged when it saw max stalking it.
