dave hdr is just taking 3 or more photos at different exposure levels, so for example a sky that is "white out" but the foreground is clear then with a lower exposure you get the clouds but the foreground is dark and lose detail, you then use photoshop to "merge HDR", it then merges all of the photos together so you get all of the detail

i use cs6 on my mac and it does it all for me, quite happy to meet up some time and show you.

a lot of cameras now have an AEB (auto exposure bracketing) so you set the exposure to the correct one for a normal photo, then the camera will take one either side, i have mine set to 5 so it takes 2 either side, at 1/4 stop each photo, hope i have explained it.

as i say if you want to nip round or meet up sometime will show you

good for landscapes, but i dont use it all of the time just on the odd ones, but it comes in handy sometimes if you have got the exposure wrong, i also use raw rather than jpg, but thats another waffle sometime

Thanks for the photos max, they bring back happy memories. I have moored at the locks there a few times over night. The Lock Inn does good grub and decent ale, I remember the landlord has LOK1N as his car registration.
The cottage must be popular, we tried to book it a few years ago and it was fully booked. The year after my wife had the heart failure so we never got chance to try again.

I was offered a tutorial by someone who seems to have acquired these skills, but I declined as life was just a bit full on at the time......and I'm not entirely sure I would actually want to use the skill...but I hate to be beaten.

I think that is my reason for the question, I don't have the facility on my camera to bracket the shots automatically, and to do the same manually would require a tripod, if I have understood the method. Three shots, one at the right exposure one stepped down and one stepped up.

Church I thank you for the explanation, and yes you explained it to a point that I understood, and the offer to instruct me as to the workings of the world of HDR, I thank you for both.
However, and this is the rub, I am not a fan of a lot of the HDR's I think they are, shall we say "not for me" and some I have seen , I don't like at all. I was just curious how the end result was arrived at.
Some sites I have looked at, some photographers use HDR all the time, and some shots look very "chocolate box" to me. I do however respect people who choose to use the method and would not want to sway people away from using the method if they chose to do so, but not me.

Margaret Pilkington 06-11-2012 20:38

Re: Today in pictures

I second that Dave.......I have seen some pics which look OK, if you like that sort of thing, some of them look very 'artificial'(for want of a better word)... I prefer most of my shots as nature intended them...although I do like to play around a little bit with effects...sepia and mono.
While this can be effective, it can never take anything away from the original.

I just thought I would give it a go to see if I could do it......and I understand the principles, but I haven't had any good results.

Hiya everyone,

Wow, this has been a busy thread the past two days. I have been out and about so not had much time to check in until tonight and hence spent a good hour or so looking at all the recent posts on this thread.

Some great photos been uploaded and also discussion about HDR processing, which I think has pretty much been covered. I do some HDR processing, but I used a program called Photomatix Pro 3.

I sit on the fence regards "to process or not to process" .... however, I do tend to spend some time editing my photos, mainly because the camera does not always take the photo as I see it with my own eyes. I guess each of us sees something in a different way. Take for instance a sunset .... what I see may not necessarily be what the person standing next to me sees, because of many reasons [i.e., physical make up (eyes) and emotions (feelings) about a particular vista/scene etc).

By processing an image I can aim to create an image the way I see it, and share that with others so they see a different perspective.

Anyway .... enough about processing for now from me. I want to share with you some of the photos I took of a bonfire we had in our neighbourhood.

Cheers

Dawn :)

Davemac and I have had this discussion about what each of us sees in a photograph.......and I am glad that you have said some of the things that we have said......it underlines our thoughts precisely.
Which is why I wish some of the National Heritage properties would sell us snappers a licence to photograph the loveliness of their buildings, instead of an expensively produced glossy brochure.

These days you can take good pictures without using flash - they don't like you to use flash as it may cause light damge to artefacts. I would have loved to take pictures inside Osborne House, but it was forbidden - but I could have paid almost ten quid for a brochure with pictures, to which I had no personal connection....and personal connection is the key to your own photo's.

Re: Today in pictures

I should have said English Heritage and National Trust properties...it was early and my brain was still a bit foggy with sleep.

These national bodies do not realise that selling a licence to an amateur photographer is all profit......there is no outlay for printing and marketing.....and they would still sell those glossy brochures to people who had visited without a camera....so it is a win win situation for them.

I would happily have paid a tenner for a licence to take pics in Osborne House.......as it is, I did sneak a picture inside the house, but it was of an outside view - an elevated position that allowed me to capture the Solent that runs past the bottom of the very vast grounds of this place......but taking pictures of any of the inside was impossble because there were vigilant staff in every room...watching out for transgressors.

It is a shame when they stop you from taking photographs like you say Margaret, professional photos are generally a bit like a catalogue of contents in stately homes etc. and don't capture the feelings a place gives uniquely to you as an individual. We all "see" things differently and catch aspects of certain things with our own eye. That I suppose is the "art" in photography and it's individualism.

I really must get my camera out and get out and about again - for now I will just post one picture which is the view I've been seeing the most of recently. It's the view from my laptop on a grey day -we've been having a lot of fog but it's glorious today!:hothothot

I'm telling you, they watch you like hawks and any hint of a bit of kit that would take a photograph and they are onto you.
I have been in Osborne House a few times.......my last point and shoot camera was quite small but I got spotted trying to take a picture of the Royal bathroom.......I was made to feel like a five year old......I almost went and sat on the naughty step.

Yet we went to Plas Newydd on Anglesey and we were allowed to take pictures as long as we did not activate the flash......there were attendants dotted about the place, but nothing like the numbers in Osborne House - where there were two or three to a room.

methinks it is more to protect their "copyright" than the effects of flash, which to my knowledge most if not all modern flash have UV filtering glass and its UV light that does the damage, (although a study has shown that it only does the same as a musuems electric light sources)

just another way of creaming us of some more of our hard earned, bet f i wanted to do a private photo session and was willing to make "a substantial" contribution, that would be ok'd by the curator

Re: Today in pictures

I'm sure you are right, but as I say, I would be quite willing to pay for a snappers licence -(they do this in some of the large cathedrals) because it is money for the coffers with very little in the way of outlay...they just put a sticky badge on your coat.
They would still sell their glossy brochures, as some people do not want to take pics and prefer to have the sanitised product( when I say that I mean with no people in the shot).

The pictures I take are personal to me...they mean something...they have the essence of the visit...and they provide a wonderful diversion for my elderly disabled Mum when we get back home......I put them onto disc and she can watch them on her TV...this way she gets to visit places that are sometimes inaccesible to wheelchairs.

In Plas Newydd we were not allowed to photograph the very large Whistler Mural......that was because it is still under copyright.

Thank you Margaret, and I am so happy that they have been inspirational for you. I agree, one does become a bit complacent with the beauty that surrounds us and this is why I try, through my photography, to remind people of what we have in front of us. Clayton is a beautiful place with so much splendor on offer. I love it here.

Hello everyone yes I'm back from my travels safe and sound if a little exhausted. Got about 1000 pics to sort through so will bore you with ten a day for a while! This first batch are before we got going on the ship, we stopped overnight in Woodstock near Oxford on our way to Dover and I took a few snaps of Blenheim Palace which is there.

More tomorrow...

  1. Imposing gatepost at Blenheim Palace
  2. It was a very misty morning - shame about the ticket box on the main drive
  3. The building from the other side, with autumn colours
  4. Startled lion in the courtyard
  5. More autumn colour on a building in Woodstock
  6. First sight of the ship at Dover
  7. Loading supplies for the voyage
  8. The last of England - with Dover Castle on the hill
  9. No it's not Monet but a sunrise over the Bay of Biscay through a wet porthole
  10. Rain in the distance and the wash from the ship

Darren, Dianne, thanks for the welcome back.

Today I'm posting pics from our first stop, Funchal, Madeira. Rough weather delayed our arrival and we got there in the evening of the day we should have got there in the morning. However it meant we had time to go ashore then plus all the next day - but we would have to miss one of our stops in the Cape Verde Islands (more about that later).

The weather in Madeira was just right for me - low 70s and little humidity - very comfortable. First impressions were how green it was - and flowers everywhere. But it's not like that in the mountains as we saw the next day. Still, the warmth was lovely after leaving a misty damp Britain in mid-October.

  1. First sight of land after four days - the outlying islands of Madeira
  2. We won't have to rely on the promenade deck for our exercise for a day or two
  3. There were already two cruise ships in harbour when we arrived - floating brick P&O Ventura dwarfing the German Aida
  4. This rock wall was opposite our berth in Funchal
  5. These trees were also opposite. High up on a rock wall a bit further along
  6. An old fortress and foliage, taken through a gap in the roof of a walkway
  7. Pinnacles and palm tree around the cathedral tower
  8. Artistic doorway in the Old Town of Funchal - there were lots of others, all different
  9. Cable car up to the village of Monte, above Funchal
  10. Running statue in seafront gardens

Yes, it really caught my eye - don't know whether they wrecked the door to do it or did a clever refurb job! There were lots of other nice ones around that area of town too - it's an arty quarter.

  1. Fort on the seashore
  2. Ships lit up at night - ours is on the right
  3. The greenness of the island disappears as you go up into the volcanic landscape of the mountains
  4. And the cold and rain set in!
  5. The second highest point of the island
  6. The last remaining ice house - there used to be lots of these in the mountains
  7. Traditional musicians - very touristy, but the show was very well done
  8. Dancers with the above
  9. Wicker worker, a traditional island industry

No it's a handle I think - the wick is in the wicker factory! Must say I was very tempted to bring one home...

Nice photos -have just caught up. I see it's a droplet time of year Dave -nice autumny selection.

Sue I love the "Picasso" style door. The volcanic part of Madeira looks to be a real contrast to lowland areas by the sea. Similar in someways to Tenerife. No shots of you or Richard yet -hope he had his Panama hat with him!

All these Atlantic islands are volcanic - so I guess there will be some similarities.

Yes, I have a couple of shots of Man in Panama - will post later for you!

Hiya,

Susie, nice to meet you here and welcome back from your jollies. It looks like you had an amazing time. Thanks for sharing your photos with us, which are bill.

Dave, loving the recent photos of your outings the past few days. I've not had much chance to get much photography done since the weekend, so no photos to post. However, I have been looking through my archive of pics and there are a few older pics of Clayton and surrounds that I took over the past two years, which I may upload once I get a chance.

Cheers

Dawn :)

Thanks Cashy, keep checking this thread for more pics of my travels. The ship was a bit different from those you're used to - quite small (800+ passengers),fairly crowded public rooms and lots of old farts! The food was OK but nothing to write home about. Most people dressed formally even on the casual nights! We are used to an even smaller ship, Discovery, more geared to "adventure" cruising. Still, it was a good trip and I enjoyed the days on shore. Got very tired so was glad of lots of time between stops to recharge my batteries in the cabin.

Actually the cake they have in Madeira is more like Parkin with candied peel in it - on our coach trip we had some, along with a huge slice of the sort we make over here. Very filling!

I brought one back for our neighbour and what did she turn up with to welcome us home? An apple cake! I haven't given the Madeira cake to her yet.

Today in Pictures. was one of those days when, after it is all over, you think "that was a spanking walk"

1. Such a nice day, Dean Clough Reservoir is favourite.
2. I was going to say not a cloud in the sky, well just two overhead.
3. I had a mooch up a gully.
4. Heading up the far side, done this shot before, but not in brown.
5. The sun was low in the sky giving long shadows and sharp colours.
6. Seagulls taking a moment to reflect. (see what I did there)
7. The sun was going down, this is the length of lower Dean Clough reservoir.
8.As we sat there, Bobert and I, the sun was dropping below the hill.
9. This was as we set off back to the car before it was pitch black.
10. Last shot before we crossed the road, back to the car.

Hiya Dave,

Great set of photos there, looks like you had an enjoyable walk. I absolutely love the sunset photos .... I'm a sucker for sunrise and sunset photos and love the colours and composition you have captured in the last 3. Also like the low angle of the reservoir in #7, and the reflection in #6.

Hi Margaret,

Thanks for the lovely comments. I used a star filter attached to the front of the lens for 2 & 10, this helps create the 'sparkle' effect.

Thanks for the Strelitzia, Dianne - not sure whether I like them as a flower but they are certainly striking. I am more into the cottage garden type of thing.

I see we have just clocked up page 200 on this thread - well done all!

Today I'm moving on to Cape Verde and starting with some flowers and other odds and ends.

We were supposed to go to two of the islands but thanks to rough weather on the way only managed one stop, Mindelo on Sao Vicente, a shame because I think the other, at the capital, Praia, would have been more interesting.

The islands were Portuguese until about forty years ago when they became independent and they have suffered since then. The infrastructure is lacking and they have suffered famine, mainly due to drought from lack of rainfall. They are supposed to be an up and coming holiday destination but I don't think it's penetrated to the island we visited. We saw one new holiday development but it looked a bit half hearted. The climate is hot and humid every single day with very little rainfall and the island was very barren. Again the islands are volcanic and for those of you who remember my pictures of the Svalbard archipelago near the North Pole - the mountains are like that but without any snow!

It was a Sunday when we visited so most of the streets in my pics look fairly deserted but we were assured that on other days the place is thronging with life.

Anyway, here goes...

  1. Hibiscus growing by the roadside in town
  2. Close up of above
  3. The leaves look like an acacia and there were plenty of larger trees about bearing lots of bean-type pods
  4. Not sure what this is
  5. Have to pass on this one as well
  6. Grasshopper - there were lots of these about in the mountains. Not nearly as large and fierce as it looks!
  7. There seems to be a tradition of visiting ships leaving their calling cards painted on the harbour wall. A lot were in this charmingly naive style. Four examples here

Nice flowers growing wild, to some they are weeds. I would say 3 and 5 were mimosa, same leaves and pods, if it were not for the flowers, which don't look like them.

You may be right as the flowers do look acacia like, it was the leaves that swayed me. You will notice they have semi closed, as is the way with mimosa. As you were there you will have more of a sence of the plant, than I will from a photo.

The boat pictures were really charming and fun - not seen anything like it anywhere else.

Today, my first batch of snaps from Cape Verde...

  1. Rock with a lighthouse on top through the porthole - our first sighting of Cape Verde
  2. Ship in harbour, showing the barrenness of the landscape
  3. They are doing some experiments with wind turbines
  4. The harbour, with town behind and spectacular mountain
  5. It was Sunday and the locals were enjoying the town beach
  6. Smart building on the sea front
  7. Courtyard in old building converted to arts centre
  8. The main market
  9. Inside the market - it was closed, being Sunday, but we were allowed to look inside. Remind you of anywhere?
  10. Government building

Yes indeed - the British had a strong presence in this town in the 19th century and the pink governmental building in pic 10 has overtones of colonial India. The newer stuff on the edge of the town is often unfinished - folks start a house, leave the country to get a job and then add bits to the house when they have the money. Doesn't make for a very pretty streetscene, though I am told that they keep the houses very nice inside.

Today in Pictures. a bit of a moist outing.

1. The end of the rainbow was just behind that wall. The wet bit is Jackhouse Reservoir.
2. Walking up to the waterfall, I noticed someone under the overhang, certain parts of my body tightened.
3. I hope I wont get probed.
4. The point at which I do a left turn.
5. One of the streams that feed into the reservoir.
6. Almost at the edge of the woods.
7. At the edge.
8. Another of the streams that runs through the woods.
9. Looking toward Pendle Hill, the colours are the sun reflecting off the rain in the clouds. The sun is behind me, a long way behind, but behind never the less.
10. Looking off to the right of my position.

Lovely set of photos Dave, back to your natural watery habitat! I wonder who thought to give the alien a shower? I particularly love the rainbow and the heavy, illuminated skies in number 9 has great depth to it. When i saw your silouhette in number 10 I thought "Wow! I'd crop that and frame it." to bring out the effect -hope you don't mind me doing it for you!:o:D
If you download it and look at it full size (instead of thumbnail) it's quite spectacular!

I am always grateful for input and suggestions on my pictures as I don't always see the possibilities. I will be uploading it to my flickr page later today, It may give you a better quality to download from there if you want to use it.
