When I pressed the shutter it fired the flash, but the exposure was about 4 seconds (I have a tiny tripod) and the picture was the result. So I cant say its down to technique, more being a Muppet.

However it came about it certainly makes a good photo.

Update on the ice storm: we've had a few power flickers, but so far so good. Had a nice hot dinner, thanks (no sandwiches). I'm concerned that Eric's power might be out, as Kingston and area was hardest hit today. The worst is yet to come for us tonight, as another inch of ice is possible on tree branches and everything! There are already downed branches littering my driveway. The car is safely in visitor's parking.

Its going dark around here at about 3.30 ish at the moment, today being the shortest for light, so I am playing around with the long shutter speeds and street light shots.

Its wet over here, but the weather is not as extreme as you are having, on an up side there must be an opportunity for snow shots.

There is some snow left, but now the ice is coating everything. It makes for treacherous driving, and walking! I've been busy in the art co-op today, and again tomorrow, but I'll keep my eyes peeled for interesting shots :)

No, it just sounded like it. I was standing by the car this morning scraping all the ice off the windshield when a tree close by lost a branch. There was a big cracking sound before the branch fell. I nearly jumped out of my boots!

One of my favourite walks, there are footpaths from the bottom of the reservoirs that take you over the nab. Number 8 is the place I got a lot of fungi shots a couple of years ago, not much this year though, number 9 is a good shot, especially getting them to sit still for a photo.

Today in Pictures, not quite the Coppice, just the front edge through to the top of Arden Hall.

1. Front edge of the Coppice.
2. The top of Arden hall, not sure of the name for this area, I just know some paddling and a bit of climbing had to be done to get this shot, plus my flat cap fell in the stream.
3. You have to be in it, to wet it.
4. Heading up toward the reservoirs.
5. Spire farm, there is a hint of hailstone hitting my bonce.
6. Channelled water to fuel the industrial revolution.
7. You will never guess what's dangling in the water.
8. The first reservoir feeding the second.
9. Almost back at the car park, in between the last shot and this it hail-stoned and a flurry of snow, and it does feel just short of freezing.
10. The sun has just gone down past Darwen Tower in the distance.

Ideally, a walk like that I would get the mrs to drop us off and we`d find our way home, but she was out shopping all day so had to just park up and do a circular walk.
The only way I can get good pics of them is if I make them sit down, even then they are fidgety, but trying to get pics while they are running about is almost impossible. It is a nice walk around there though, will definitely go again.

I go around the Coppice on a casual but regular basis, but the walk up to the waterfall is not as often, as it is a bit of a scramble to get to the base of the water, and then a slippy climb up the slopes to the reservoirs, so I only do that bit occasionally.

OK, just me then, the ground just seems to be looking downhill to me, but it obviously isn`t because of the waterflow. A bit of an optical illusion. I think it`s the green bit to the left that`s doing it makes me think i`m stood on a wall looking down.

Oh, of course! Now I can see that. My brains are a bit addled at the moment.

Just got power back on after 18 hours, and cell phone working again. The remaining trees are still coated with ice and heavily weighted. The winds are picking up and there are still crashing sounds outside as trees and branches fall. Some of my favourite trees are barely hanging in, and some are lost. What a mess!

Thanks Davemac! My first thought when I stepped out yesterday morning was: How do I get to the car without falling down? Then it was: how do I open a car door coated in an inch of ice, followed by: where is it safe to stand with all these tree branches crashing down around me? Then I remembered my camera!

Aye Carolyn, it's not a bad Weihnachtsmarkt. Not one of the major German ones but it does get a fair bit of traffic, national & international, would've been nicer with a light dusting of snow though. :)

The wet bits took a bit of getting as its was muddy underfoot and down a slope, but if you want the shot you have to wet your pants.

Maybe Davemac likes a wet gusset and knees but I am a stay indoors chap this weather.
I took these following pictures looking through the patio windows with a macro lens and a lot of faffing about with the aperture setting.
Then while I had the lens on I played around with a light bulb and got the photo of the filament, then a half inch screw.

You can tell I am a bit bored.

Fast shutter speed and high aperture (F) No.

I have been playing around with different apertures and very fast shutter speed taking photographs of a 60 watt clear bulb.
The UV filter on the lens was touching the glass at one stage and I finished up with a bad left eye for a while, I must try later using sun glasses.

That's a good effort gpick, I will try again in the morning, I have had a few cans tonight and am afraid of dropping the camera.
I am using a Nikon D7100 ( click on link for details) with a prime 40mm lens and I may try with a star filter later.
I have used up today's allocation so I can't post any more photos until tomorrow..

Today in Pictures, on a very windy hill, and temperatures approaching zero, we managed to stay out for an hour before hypothermia forced a retreat down the hill, and yes nutmegs.

1. Differing skies, one way black clouds.
2. The other, overcast but better visibility.
3. Musbury heights off to the right, Calf Hey and Ogden reservoirs.
4. The mast you can see is just behind Darwen Tower, the mast lights up at night and can be seen from Accrington as a column of red lights.
5. Can you tell where I am yet !
6. The valley of stone, Jamestone Quarry just below.
7. Not a person in sight,.......... champion.
8. Helmshore in the distance.
9. The light is fading, must be time to go.
10. This building get less every time I pass.

I got my camera as an early christmas pressie, but got a new zoom lens to go with it this morning. Unfortunately Santa must have forgot what camera I got cos he left me a Canon lens.

Re: Today in pictures

I bought myself a Nikon lens with the same spec for Christmas, it is a very useful piece of kit and the macro is not bad, it will focus down to 3feet and gets decent results.
Hope you get the right one soon gpick'

If the one you want has the 58mm thread I have two filters which will fit it, a 4 star filter and a ND8 which cuts a lot of light out.
I have four different lens and they all have different thread but I sold one with a 58mm thread and kept the filters, They are yours if you want as a Christmas present from Santa Gremlin.

Today in Pictures, I thought Dean Clough would be a lonely place today, it was mucked up with folk.

1. Start point, but in the other direction.
2. The line of trees is Goldacre Lane.
3. Through a muddy field.
4. Same field, differing light.
5. Not long before sunset, and I am in the middle of a muddy field.
6. The temperature is dropping as well.
7. Once a small holding.
8. The sun is now on the horizon.
9. There had to be a wet bit.
10. Heading back up the hill.

Currywurst, but as you said it was red, then they've done you a Currywurst using a Krakauer sossy (of Polish origin) & quite nice by itself or with a large dollop o' Mustard. :)

A walk along the canal today, coming back over past Whinney Hill quarry, then back along the canal.
1 & 2. Sniffing for something.
3. That water isn`t calm for long.
4. Cobbles look good in black and white.
5. Two donkeys, one shy, one not.
6. Not going that way.
7. A field of geese.
8. Soon turns into a field with no geese.
9. It`s not been a good walk if they come back clean.
10. Loads of mushrooms.

Today in Pictures, Out the bottom end of Foxhill Bank nature reserve.

1. A once busy workers footpath.
2. Over the wall into the Nature reserve.
3. Muddy steps.
4. The wet bit of the reserve.
5. A circle of seagulls.
6. Its one of the few fungi still on the go.
7. It looks like not everyone had a merry Christmas.
8. Once these steps were that busy with feet they wore away.
9. Coach Road, and steps that went up to the big house.
10. Not a standard railway bridge, when the railway was being built through Church a local mill owner objected to the railway being so close to his new house. Mr James Simpson had the railway company fancy up the bridge, it was built with alcoves and terracotta balustrades to be more pleasing to the eye when he had to travel underneath on his way home.

#4 and 5 could be paintings. What an interesting story the abandoned roses suggest - if only they could talk, eh?

Just grabbed my snap camera and shot these through the window. Not very good quality, but you can see the birds, I think. Incidentally there's snow on top of the ice now.
1. There's a male cardinal in there somewhere!
2. These are red polls (I looked them up).
3. a Bluejay - beautiful but raucous-sounding birds.

Today in Pictures, wet and windy, I had to tie my flat cap on.

1. Start point, St Mary's Burial Ground.
2. Heading through a soggy field.
3. The clouds are whizzing past.
4. Pendle Hill in the distance.
5. At the end of the wall is the Millennium Baby Wood.
6. The soggy field we just tramped across.
7. Back across the same soggy field again, I do like slutchy strides.
8. The clouds suggest snow, but it just keeps away for now.
9. Back into the Burial Ground.
10. Have you met our Ivy.

Today in Pictures, a very wet, muddy, slutchy, sloppy, hailstoning experience.

1. Dunkenhalgh land.
2. Heading down to the river, it doesn't look very clever weather wise.
3. A swollen River Hyndburn, the roar is very loud.
4. The water is taking with it a lot of soil.
5. I find the breast stroke is best.
6. Right, where is the best place to put my picnic basket.
7. Heading back up the hill,......slowly.
8. The hill in the distance is "Ossy" moors, home of the turbines.
9. In the Autumn this stump was covered in fungi.
10. Time for home.
