It was, I remember it being there when the yard was used by the cleansing department.

Today in Pictures, Shoe Mill, the short version.

1. A right turn here takes us to the site of the old Infection Hospital.
2. The Larch are getting ready now the temperatures are getting better.
3. The old infection hospital site, no definite buildings remain, but this is the base of some long gone building on the hospital site.
4. Tumbling down hill, this is the wall that used to keep the railway separate.
5. Shoe Mill site, and the base of the factory chimney.
6. The whole area is littered with bits of walls, piles of long gone buildings, but it doesn't give you a feel of how the area used to be heavily populated with industry, and even a coal mine. I have looked for evidence of a shaft but nothing remains.
7. It's wet, so I must be doing it right.
8."Five Arches"
9. Moss at the sharp end of Macro.
10. Just to finish off, a wet bit.

Shoe Mill Pit wasn't really a pit as such, it was a drift mine.

The lack of leaves helps the viewing of the ruins. It looks like Spring is well on the way for you! :). Not so for us - 10-15 cm of snow forecast for tomorrow. Ah well, we'll really appreciate it when it arrives. Spring, that is, not the snow.

We are having unusually high temperatures at the moment (for the season) the buds are bursting, spring flowers are out, crocus and daffs for the most part, the bluebells are just leaves at the present time. I have even spotted a couple of butterflies, but too flighty to get a good shot. Even the ground is drying out, it is no longer seeping through the lace holes, more a plasticine consistency. It might sound a bit crackers, but I was hoping for a bit of snow, just so I could get a few festive shots, we haven't even had much frost, so my frosty shots went out of the window as well. When you look at what other people have had though we have got off lightly.

Have just been having catch-up on the thread after an over-long absence - my like finger isn't working too well at the moment so I gave up after a while but please don't be offended - I DID like all the photos. I've had a bad flare-up of an old problem connected to an injury in my neck and am a bit KO still - not very pleasant as I'm suffering from nausea, vertigo and have a lot of pain in my right shoulder and problems using my arm! Have quite a few pics to share - I tried putting some into a sort of movie but am not clever enough to add music yet. Will see if I can post it on a separate thread as there are more than 10 shots on it and I don't want to get into bother :D Tomorrow morning -joy of joys- Fastweb have promised they are going to finally connect my home phone line and internet which will be a big help - we've only been living here for 4 months -how's that for service ...

Two pics from today, and one from last week. It was nice and balmy today - it reached 10 degrees. What a tease!!! I swear I heard birds singing. They seem to know that better days are coming. The snow is old and dirty now - not to worry, there's another dump on its way tomorrow. That should freshen things up a bit! :)

1. Fifty shades of grey, plus a little red.
2. I've been wanting to get a snap of this poor tree for ages.
3. Last week's fresh snow blanket.

Today in Pictures, a frosty start brought with it blue skies.

1. My doctor said I have to stop climbing trees.
2. Looking back at the start point.
3. In the shadow of "the dunk"
4. The water levels have gone back to normal, if this keeps up there will be a hose pipe ban.
5. One slip and its swimming home for me.
6. The trees that line the footpath.
7. The footpath is to the left of the picture, still muddy.
8. The motorway bridge, and time to turn for home.
9. The meander of the river changes every time the water gets a bit frisky.
10. Then the reason the path is torn up, and the styles at either end are broken, scramblers either ride along the canal, or now this way to get to the site at Church, this site attracts these dirt bikes from all over the area. This is not the first walk I have been on that has been ruined by kids on un-insured, un-taxed, un-roadworthy dirt bikes, a few bikes spoil it for the rest of us that like the quiet countryside. Thats it rant over

No flowing water or flowery plans from me Eric. I leave that to the masters.
My "Today in pictures" took me over Sharneyford between Bacup and Todmorden and then off road down to the new wind turbine site.
Then home via the Sourhall village and drop down to Portsmouth, between Todmorden and Burnley and then home for tea.

Most photographs were taken from the car, as usual but I did have to walk just 25 yards to get the shots looking up the turbine tower. Worn out now and having a few deserved beers.

No.1 Looking back towards the last bit of tarmac.
N0.2 Getting nearer.
No.3 That's where I did the 25 yard sprint.
No.4 A lot nearer.
No.5 more nearness.
No.6 main road to Sourhall.
No.7 Looking back across the Tod Valley.
No.8 Looking back down to Sourhall.
No.9 Last look at the turbines.
No.10 Looking down on Portsmouth, almost back to proper roads again.

I must remember to clean the windscreen next trip.

I must admit, Eric, that days like this have their charm. A few vignettes: a flock of starlings, woodpeckers and bluejays feasting from my feeder; a robin, huddled in the tree (they're insect eaters, not a lot for them today); the garbage truck getting stuck momentarily going up my hill; my elderly neighbour coping, cancelling her medical appointments; a woman I don't know slogging through the snow and apparently photographing birds complete with tripod and a long lens (no, it's not me, I spied her from my window); being comfortable in a warm home after spending a languorous day doing anything and nothing - I wouldn't change it except BRING ON SPRING SOON PLEASE!!!!!!

Great shots Frank.
I like the wood carvings...they are similar to those around the lake at Lynn Brenig in north Wales

I scuffed them on there as well, they are just at the right height for banging your wheels on.

You could be walking on thin ice publishing those pictures, especially if the misses is also on here, better just to say it was your fault, it saves all those silent tea times.

Not a good idea. Remember most women park by ear. You know: "Just a little closer. A tad more. Almost there. 'CRUNCH' Ah ... perfect.";)

If you impair her hearing, she will have to park, or pull up to the gas pumps, using only her sense of smell. Using her eyes, or, god forbid, the mirror, just won't occur to her.:D

Not sure about that Frank, more likely to be a Grey wagtail, black bib, yellow underside whereas the "Pied" by definition is black & white. :)

Today in Pictures, it was colder than it looked, I went back in and changed my coat.

1. On the way down to Dean Clough Reservoir, to get some idea of how cold it was go and get a lolly out of the freezer and hold it too your forehead until you have seen all the pictures.
2. What happened to the water level, I have never seen it this low.
3. This is the point that upper and lower Dean Clough Reservoir meet, although Lower Dean is now lower than it was, so it is now lower Lower Dean Clough.
4. This is the sluice between them both.
5. More like the Devils Causeway.
6. This is the overflow that sends the water down stream to join the River Calder close to Bowley Scout camp.
7. Once a rill putting water into the reservoir, long since abandoned.
8. Walls, and wet bits.
9. At this point I am doing the doggy paddle.
10. I have never seen three of those depth gauges before.

3. Including walls.
4. Not much opportunity for droplets.
5. Still a bit muddy.
6. Some places still holding onto Autumn colour.
7. That tree has a good hold on the ground.
8. When you said "do you want a cone" I thought you meant ice cream.
9. Gurners in the mist again.
10. I've saved you a seat.

and with that an early visit to Spring Wood comes to an end.
