According to the forecast, we have some coming.....of course it isn't of the same calibre as the stuff you get....but it will bring life to a grinding halt...you can bet on it!

I hope it's not too nasty for you folks. My outside thermometer read minus 24 this morning. It was the kind of cold that makes you think of all the poor creatures outside, wild or otherwise. People too, who are homeless and spend the night in bus shelters.
I went for an early morning drive and it was pleasant enough inside the vehicle. The little bit of snow on the ground was quite pretty - it sparkled like diamonds in the sun. I wished I had my camera, but then I would have to stop and get out in it. No bluddy chance hah hah.

What is needed is a plan ...

https://www.cityofkingston.ca/reside...c/snow-removal

Got to admit, tho', it's easy for us to say that 'cause we expect snow. We have the street plows, the sidewalk plows, and me with my trusty shovel:alright: And you have to budget for it ... and that's millions of dollars, even for a small place like Kingston. Here's a clip of snow removal on the 401 ... I believe you guys call it a Motorway. Count the plows:

We do have 'snow days' if it's really bad. And young ones consider themselves very lucky if they get one, so it doesn't happen often. What mainly happens is the school buses are cancelled. The schools stay open, I believe, leaving the parents to get the kids there if they can.

At least minus 20 this morning as hubby went to get us our Tim Hortons brekkie. It's garbage day, and that's my reward for getting it all put out (for us and my elderly neighbour). It was so cold my eyes ran and my face hurt. I scuttled back inside as quickly as I could. Hubby didn't even wear gloves or hat, as he sat in the cold car waiting for it to warm up, apparently. He's made of tougher stuff than me!

Thats basically what i was told, the schools stay open, the teachers here though are far too mard, so they shut em, never used to be the case, as yer probably know yerself? if the heating was outa action, we were told to keep our coats on. plus nobody had a car, so almost everyone managed to get to school.:)

Maybe not here; but in parts of Saskatchewan and Manitoba the nuts would be under threat ... and in Qausuittuq, the bridge wouldn't stand a chance.;)

Wow, just walked home in stuff I don't remember happening before.

It was hitting me like small hail stone, but arriving on the floor like snow, the level kept increasing, meanwhile just to add to confusion somewhere over the horizon, lightening seemed to appear.

Glad to be home and out of.

Got a couple of pairs off Amazon first week of this year Rob . Mrs P's on a NY fitness kick and has used them extensively. Impressed.
Used mine on last weekends walk from Gamecock over the Nab.
Mine have a velcro over strap to help keep them on on rough terrain, simple DIY mod to Mrs P's and she's happy.

Walking?

From the Gamecock over the Nab?

There's a road there, life's too short for walking. And if you can't get there using an engine it's not worth going.

Anyway, you'll wear those nice driving boots out!

Im not "trolling" , I'm genuinely curious as to why some folk dont seem to feel the cold at all,is it folk just putting on a hard front or is it possible to build resistance to the cold ?

I once had a theory that people from England came over to Canada with a kind of resistance to the cold winters over here. I, like many, grew up in Brit houses with no central heating, and with one coal fired fireplace to heat the whole house. I found my first couple of Canadian winters to be no trouble at all (I came over in 1966). The Canadian :confused:homes I lived in had central heating and were well insulated. Then after a couple of years I started to notice the cold. My child's mind saw this as my blood having become 'thinner'. Now I think that maybe my reliance on central heating lowered my resistance to cold temps.

Don't think it's too much of the "hard front" or "resistance" ... it's just that, whatever the weather, shiite has to get done. Folks have to go to work, school, shopping, dog walking ... all the normal everyday kinda stuff. And snow has to be shoveled ... Snow and cold come ... the sanders, plows, and shovels come out, and, bingo, it's all sorted out until the next blast hits. And those wearing shorts and tees ... either they are Canadian (after all, -9 is a pleasant winter temperature:D) or just trying to show off how "tough" they are. All they really are is dumb.;)

I spent almost 20yrs in Saskatchewan, and have seen, and lived thru, temps in the minus 50s, without the windchill. You get used to it. Never learn to like it, but you just shrug your shoulders, put on your long johns, pick up your shovel, and get on with your life.

Growing up in a similar environment, I thought I was hardy to the cold T,after seeing the youth of Accrington in shorts and Tshirts ,I've reassessed that opinion.
On the other hand Mother grew up in the same house and she can happily sit there with the logs burning and thata in the middle of the UK's hottest days (I'm not keen on being too hot either).

Not worried about mine ... but there's a large feral cat colony in the 'hood, and maybe a couple of strays. I can see their footprints around the cat food I put out. And all of us around here honk their horns before starting their vehicles just in case some animal is taking shelter under the hood.

Wednesday was a glorious treat for us here in southern Ontario. As Eric says we revelled in above zero temps for a day. The night chilled down dramatically though to minus 20. I was awakened by several very loud booming noises. It was my roof rafters reacting to the sudden temperature change.

Exactly what I say when I read of temps down there going up into the 40s;) And it ain't all that bad really. Today it's -10; but it will rise to 0c. And as you well know, living in the colonies ain't just about the weather. Like you, I probably wouldn't want to live (as opposed to "visit") anywhere other than where I am right now.

And both Canada and Australia rank in the top ten "Happiest Countries in the World." ... If it weren't for the weather, we would be ecstatic ... :D And that might get uncomfortable after a while.

What a beautiful morning! Sunny, clear, and 4 degrees ... that's on the plus side;) Had my morning Timmy's on my back deck ... laced, liberally, with some rum my buddy brought back from Cuba, (nothing like an early start:cool:) along with a whole bunch of Montecristos:alright: I might even bbq today as it looks as if it will hit double digits. What to eat? Bambi burgers sound good ... maybe a lake trout. Whatever, it's great to sit outside watching the squirrels bark at my dog ... maybe I should tell them she's deaf.:D

It hit 20c yesterday:alright: Another nice one coming up. Time for outdoor beer drinking; I think I'll select a Tank House Ale, a sturdy brew from a small brewery in TO. If I drink and toke too much I might risk a selfie.:D

Weather's lovely IMHO. I absolutely detest :(summer it makes me physically ill. I occasionally meet people by chance who feel broadly the same. Anyone else find they come to life:) in late Autumn/Winter ? I feel tons better and achieve more than when its hot.:D

Nope, I wouldn't be so bad if there was just a smidgin of light. I do not mind it cold if the sky is blue and it is light.
But over the last few days it has never been light enough to do without the lights on......does my box in. It really does.

10c here today ... and that's on the plus side:eek: No snow for Christmas; and tomorrow forecasting 14c! This has been one weird "winter." Still, a hot scotch goes down well.:D

It was 14degrees in Manchester today, but wet with it.......it certainly doesn't feel like Christmas.....despite all the shops playing 'It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas'......we have had colder days in July!

Christmas Day forecast in South Australia - should hit 37 degrees, strong winds - possibility of rain. Not the best of days weather-wise but what the heck....

Much cooler Boxing Day, in the 20's.

The forecasters reckon New York is going to break records by having it's warmest Christmas on record @ 55deg F.

Re: weather??

Why are folk humanising the weather?
"Barney","Steve" and now "Imogen" these are some of the names put forward for our recent weather conditions.
It may just be me,but there does seem to be more "storms" since they started naming the ruddy things.
To be quite Frank,I've had more than my Phil of this wet weather.
The wind isn't constant but the gusts are frightening,it's put a dampener on my day...

...The Met office have come up with a "name our storms" project if anyone has a suggestion.

Gusty Gordon, windy Whizz, lightening Less, damp gusset Dave, mesoscale Margaret and wet shower explorer are all names I Imogen won't make it to the short list.

Margaret Pilkington 08-02-2016 13:48

Re: weather??

I don't like the naming of storms either. Maybe because it is something the Yanks do.
I was supposed to be taking Ma for her diabetic review today, but I very gently suggested that it was a day where she might end up blown away, wet through and chilled to the marrow.
So we didn't go. It isn't sensible to venture out into inclement weather unless you absolutely have to.
As for Mesoscale Margaret...well I would have preferred meteoric, but ah well..if I have to be middling, then so be it.

Record high temperatures are contributing to a massive forest fire in Fort McMurray Northern B.C. has made 80,000 people flee their homes, never seen anything like it, houses are shells, trucks and cars just shells, my daughter who works in an oil camp there just phoned to say they are just being bused to Edmonton. It,s like watching a movie seeing all the vehicles driving through the burning forests, very scary and no rain forcast until Monday. Thankfully no injuries though.

Those poor folks in Alberta are having a rough time of it with that freaky weather ... and they had that massive flooding back in '13. Weather out on the prairies and areas up toward the shield can be real scary. All we can hope for is that the fire will burn itself out, and that nobody will be hurt. Canadian firefighters and emergency response teams are world class. And we are lucky in the sense that the damage will be limited to property

Down here around the Great Lakes weather has been cool, damp and miserable ... kinda like the Clayton weather I remember...

I know what you mean about "watching a movie" ... more and more of the world's weather seems like something out of a disaster movie ...

I hope everyone stays safe.
Houses and trucks can be replaced...those we love cannot.

We have been in Australia when they have had forest fires(firestorms) and seen the devastation they cause.
Strangely though, communities seem to rally together and be made stronger by such adversity.
My thoughts are with all those who are affected.
Man likes to feel he has control, but in truth Mother nature will always have the last word.
