After a few hot muggy days the storms have arrived ... severe weather warnings for Kingston and Prince Edward County .... tornado yesterday, but quite a ways west of here .... lots of thunder right now; seems as if the storms are rolling in off the lake .... maybe it will stir the fish into action for the openning of Bass season.

The jet stream has moved a little to the south; so, our temps have moderated a little. But it looks like nice temps in the low 20s for the next week .... as always a little cooler by the lake .... we are having a really nice late spring, early summer, with enough rain to make everything green and lush. Only problem is that the moskies seem to like it:mad:

Seems like the midgies love it though, even though I have thought there have been a lot more ever since the Spring .... was lots of columns where I live ... maybe because I am near water :-

Midge explosion in East Lancashire because of hot humid weather (From Lancashire Telegraph)

Did see a report re. mosquito populations moving over the channel and they were sending up planes to spray them before they reached us  (sorry can't find the link now).

Re: weather??

A few days ago, as I was looking out of my kitchen window, I saw what I thought were raindrops, until I realised that they were moving UP as well as down.
There were so many of them that it looked like a rainshower, and they were bouncing up and down vertically. I never knew that midges had the power to halt in mid-descent, then 'bounce back' vertically - most peculiar.

Re: weather??

That little storm that came through Accy yesterday tea time was incredible. At one point the visibility was down to 100 yds or so, and that wind just picked up so quickly, from still to really bending the trees right over in no time, and the rain was as hard as I've ever seen it briefly, with big hailstones too. Then as soon as it started it had gone again, over in 10 minutes.
It was almost like a mini tornado passed by.

Not too much happening with the weather over here, not locally anyway ... in Kingston it has been right on "normal for the time of year" all summer .... there have been a few tornados in Ontario, one resulting in four deaths when the funnel touched down at a fishing camp ... but Ontario is a big piece of real estate, and the worst we have had is the odd storm tracking through.

Going back to St. Swithin's just found this ... hadn't heard it before:

Apples and St. Swithuns
"St Swithin is christening the apples"
Brand, Popular Antiquities, 1813, i, 342
http://www.accringtonweb.com/forum/year/images/appl.jpgThere is an old saying when it rains on St. Swithin's Day, it is the Saint christening the apples.
Apple growers ask St. Swithin for his blessing each year because they believe:
  • Rain on St. Swithin's day 'blesses and christens the apples'.
  • No apple should picked or eaten before July 15th.
  • Apples still growing at St Swithin's day will ripen fully.
