All citys have higher air temperatures than towns- the building density causes the increase.
Cherokee said Blackpool rarely gets snow - that is due to the salt in the air from the sea

No, that is the temp for Kingston, ON, Canada .... I have to admit that it is way above average for this time of year; and next week it is going to cool off big time.

If it makes you feel any better there is a snow storm warning in effect for south eastern Manitoba:D ... which is only two days drive west of here. And there is lots of snow in the high Arctic and the Rockies.

Problem with Polar bear rugs is that Polars are a protected species ... protected by the govt. and by mother nature ... bears tend to get a little po'd when you try to take their clothes off ... Re: weather??

At least you still get snow in Accy, at times. Down here, being only 1 lock on the Ship Canal above sea level, if it comes down it stays for about a day - if that. Usually it snows, thaws into dirty slush, freezes, then damages the mechanism of the swing bridges across the Canal so traffic into Warrington backs up for dozens of miles.

We used to get snow. I can remember my husband walking along the Bridgewater Canal, which was frozen solid, pulling our Nik, aged about 9, in a sledge and me having to get neighbours to help me push my car on to the drive because the snow had frozen solid in the tyre ruts I'd made backing out earlier.

Nik's sledge was passed on to Peter, my grandson, and I think he used it twice. He's now passed it on to Laura and she's never been able to use it at all. I'd quite like to have a good, old fashioned snowfall, that makes everywhere look beautiful, and have the kids sledging down the big slopes at Lymm Dam. There's a whole generation growing up, in this neck of the woods at least, that won't know the joy of sledging, skating/sliding on the Dam and building snowmen.

Well, it's a balmy -23c here ... but there is still a little wind, not the 60km/h it was earlier, but still enough to make it seem a lot colder. We had a heavy snowfall last nite, but the city has all the main streets and most of the burbs all plowed out, and the sidewalk plows and sanders are hard at work. And here I sit in my igloo, in front of a roaring fire, sipping on Guiness with fireball shooters, smoking fine Canadian weed, and munching on perogies smothered in HP sauce ... life could be worse:theband:

Maybe you would consider posting a picture of your snow laden locale to put our miserable few centimetres that lasts for no more than a day or two into some sort of perspective.

Maybe I should do that ... but I will wait untill we have had another major storm ... pictures of the fresh stuff, before the plows have got at it are so much better ... I think we have a different attitude to snow and cold. We know it's coming; so most of us just decide to get out and enjoy it .... if one looks only at the negative aspects of winter, one can easily get the winter blues ... but there are many winter activities to enjoy; all one has to do is bundle up and get out there: skate, ski, snowshoe, snowboard, do some ice fishing, winter camping maybe or .... just curl up in front of a nice fire. And then there is hockey ... mayhem on ice.

Just crossed my mind that Canada came of age in a snowstorm: April 9, 1917, the Germans on Vimy Ridge woke up to Gen. Andy McNaughten's creeping barage and thousands of po'd Canadians charging out of a snowstorm to kick their asses out of trenches they had held since 1914.:theband: Many historian argue that it was this action, rather than the British North America Act of 1867, that demonstrated Canada's independent status.

Here endeth the Canadian history lesson for the day;)

And you also get them from wood burning stoves.

The wood that you burn used to be a tree and trees absorb CO2. Then when the wood is burned the CO2 is released back into the atmosphere.

Or put another way the wood that you burn is immature (by a few million years) coal or oil.

This I'm aware of .... however, most of the air pollution we have in Canada comes borne on the SW winds from the good ole US of A .... when the winds come from the north or the north west ... good clean Canadian air .... we have clear skies and great air quality. And, for the romantically inclined, star-filled skies at night:D

Eric. just browsed your city web-site and came accross this ......WINTER PARKING BAN
BEGAN DECEMBER 1
Parking is prohibited on City streets from 1 a.m. to 7 a.m. to ensure that snowplows can effectively respond to winter weather events. Car owners who defy the bylaw, risk a fine of up to $40, or possibly having their vehicle towed. Residents are also reminded that parking in the middle of a cul-de-sac is prohibited at all times. The parking prohibition remains in place until the end of March, 2009.

Question , does this apply to all streets or just main streets ?, how do residents who have no off street parking available manage .
just curious

Parking is prohibited on City streets from 1 a.m. to 7 a.m. to ensure that snowplows can effectively respond to winter weather events. Car owners who defy the bylaw, risk a fine of up to $40, or possibly having their vehicle towed. Residents are also reminded that parking in the middle of a cul-de-sac is prohibited at all times. The parking prohibition remains in place until the end of March, 2009.

Question , does this apply to all streets or just main streets ?, how do residents who have no off street parking available manage .
just curious

This applies to all streets ... it is a necessary bylaw, as most of the plowing and sanding is done between 1 and 7 in order not to interfere with traffic .... the roads are plowed promptly, and the snow build up is trucked out. And I don't really know of anyone who has no off-street parking ... houses have driveways, and apt. buidings have lots, or underground parking, with spaces for visitors (you know, if you get lucky and she invites you over to her place);)

I have been reminded many times that this site is designed to promote local issues to Accy and surrounding districts.
Of what interest is it to Accyweb members if some Cowboy gets done $40
for a traffic violation in the Americas?
Apply for a thread to the powers that be that focuses on American issues and I am sure it will be considered, though I don't think it will create much interest.

Well, seemingly its of enough interest to two Accy-web users , myself who asked a question and the person who replied , obviously some folks who, maybe being in the early stages of senility (ignorance being one symptom, bad manners another) have no interest .:dummy:

Well, I guess anti-Americanism is alive and flourishing in sunny Spain ... And I don't mean anti-Bushism, which many people subscribe to, millions of them in the US ... I mean that irrational bias against a truly great republic, based on a denial of all the good that it stands for, and a stressing of the negative. And I seem to remember several well attended threads on the drama of the American Presidential election ...

Canada and the US have many points on which they disagree; but, we are so close as friendly neighbours that I can still cross the border without a passport. All I have to do is show my current Ontario driver's licence.

You've never smelled a skunk:eek: ... it is bad, most people who smell one for the first time just up and do the technicolor yawn .... the squeezings from a wino's socks and shorts are like Chanel 5 compared to a skunk's spray .... (not that I'm familiar with wino's socks and shorts, it's a convenient trope) ... and if I were you, I wouldn't be going around sniffing men:D:hidewall::D ... or, at least, wait until they have showered:alright:
