Tonite: chance of thunder showers; and we need it. May continue into tomorrow. But for the weekend, fantastic weather.

And in Canada, we don't need to worry about running out of water. Which country has most of the world's fresh water? You have 3 guesses.

Dag panther, I'm already moaning. Those reports of very hot dry conditions are showing my extreme frustration by it all. The farm, garden and landscaping is getting crushed over here!

My brother and his family are driving down to St.Ives in Cornwall. They set off last night at 10pm, hoping to miss the worst of the traffic.

They've just called now to say they are only near Bristol. Apparently parts of the M5 are under three feet of flood water. Traffic is being re-routed on to country lanes because it's so bad. They stopped at a service station, but so has everyone else, and the place has run out of food and drink.

The British summer, what a washout.:(

Yesterday I did a favor for a sick friend of mine ... he needed someone to drive his taxi in order to pay his bills ... well, it's an almost new Impala, with good AC, so what the hell. I picked up a guy at the airport; he is a biologist at Queens U.; his speciality is the study of fragile lake environments in the Arctic and the high boreal. His studies of lake sediments have led him to draw some reasonable, yet scary info on global warming. The conversation got around to the weather in England and he told me that the heavy rainfall demonstrates the accuracy of predictions of the results of human activity on the precipitation rates in NW Europe. Just for the hell of it, I asked him how long the planet had before it became completely f**ked up. Ballpark figure, based on what he knows, and what he knows of related research: 30yrs. But he said that he would put his money on 20yrs. Interesting.

I dont believe that any of it is due to Global Warming. Things like this have happened before: Ice Age anyone??

There was also something in the Mid Ages a bit like what we are experiencing now, and you didn't see them Jetting around the world, driving round in Range Rovers and spraying deodorant before they went out!! :p

I'm not saying that CO2 omissions don't help it along a bit, but I think even if we all drove round in Toyota Prius's this would still be happening!!

Exactly thirty years ago was also a dreadful, wet summer, which followed the heatwave of 1976 the year before, just like we had last year.

I'll report back in 2037 if there is a thirty year pattern emerging here.:D

And don't forget that in 1483 the Duke of Buckingham's rebellion against Richard lll was stopped in its tracks by the flooding of the Severn after days of torrential rain. This, no doubt, can be seen as proof positive that global warming is a charming fantasy created by wild-eyed lefty granola eaters.

You guys should switch to metric ... the temps would go down immediately ... for example, today it is only 27 degrees here. And beware, I don't think the guys in Accy can handle "sunshine and warmth." Cold and damp is the way to go in Lancashire;)

Over here, hazy hot and very humid weather continues. When a hit or miss thunderstorms does actually hit here, they have been very violent and have caused alot of wind damage.

The hot weather is the most bother when cutting and splitting wood for the winter.

Re: weather??

Culpeper County named disaster area

Allison Brophy Champion
Staff writer
Friday, August 10, 2007

The U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Thursday declared seven Virginia counties, including Culpeper, primary natural disaster areas because of the sustained impact on farmers of drought and high temperatures.

The disaster designation makes farmers eligible for low-interest loans and any grants Congress may approve. Crop losses in Culpeper County are expected to total more than $1.5 million with some farmers losing more than 50 percent of their yield.

In addition, many farmers have been forced to buy hay and haul water to feed their cattle, as much of the county’s pastureland has not grown beyond a few inches in as many months.:(:(:(

Well, that somes things up pretty well for how the summer as gone. Thankfully, we have a strong, faithful, deep well which has saved most of my veges, fruits, landscaping and lawn area for croquet and badminton.

Had a nice long rain last night!

Re: weather??

This is how bad a summer we've had....

My neighbour gave me some sunflower seedlings. They are meant to grow between 6-10 foot tall, with the flowers measuring about ten inches diameter.

For months I've nurtured them. They've had a weekly feed. They've been watered on the very rare occasion it hasn't rained. Slugs and caterpillars have been picked off and killed, and they've been securely staked against the winds.

Today one of them flowered.

Hurrah!:)

Except it's the size of a bloomin' dandelion, and is only three feet tall.

I don't think it'll inspire any budding Van Goghs to get their paints and easel out.:D

So that was it :( - summer? is over officially today -I'm not ready for Autumn yet. In January, I made what I thought was a canny move by buying a mobile airconditioning machine at a winter cut price of £200 - used it 2 days in May (Spring?), and it has just taken up space since. If we do get a hot summer next year it will have got rusty by then.

Winter is on the way! Snowmobiling, four wheeling, x coutry skiing, and HOCKEY!!!!! It's still great here, temps around 20, sunny, cool evenings; but in Northern Ontario, esp north of Lake Superior around Pickle Lake, Sioux Lookout and Kapuskasing they have had snow, below zero temps, and wind chill warnings. A few weeks of fall beauty, when the maples turn into their amazing fall colors, and then winter ... can hardly wait.

I am going to lay in a couple of cords of wood for the fire place; nothing like a roaring fire on a cold night. Winter is not all that bad; you just don't give in to it. Canadians are great winter survivors: it's going to come, it's going to get frigid and white, so we might as well enjoy it. And Hockey every night for the next seven or eight months.:D

Not me this time ... in southern Ontario we still have the southerly flow ... temps with the humidex around 30. Blame the guys in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, they are having the cool weather. And as far as wet goes, we have had only a little more than half of the usual summer rain. Our big concern is the low water levels in the Great Lakes. But we will be into milder (high teens) temps by the weekend, and, if the long range forecast holds, we will have single digit highs by the second week in October.

But the leaves are turning and the show is just as beautiful as it always is. My two Maples are turning, a nice contrast to the big Elm I have.

Best wishes from paradise.:D

There are 2 large trees in my lounge window view - sycamore and norwegian maple. The sycamore always hibernates first - has about 10% yellow leaves already and a few have fallen (on my car :( )

Leaves falling on the car is not bad ... in the great ice storm of '99 a whole bloody tree fell on my car:eek:

They say that due to the severity of our drought that the foliage will be really off this year. I guess it just will help us appreciate it the next time they show in all their brilliance!

I don't think ours will be all that "off." But I know what you mean; fall in all it's colors is acknowledged as the most beautiful of the seasons here, and no doubt in your part of the world too. There's always next year.

Every day this week in supposed to be cooling down. Hate to beat a dead horse but this is not cooling down:

Except for the continual heavy sweat through "winterous" chores, this has become of some intrigue. Still harvesting alot of veges that should been long gone, the chicks and guineas are still feasting on insects, have got to finish some spring projects. In other words, these weather reports truly aren't meant to be whinges, more accurately, just weather reports from across the pond!:p

Eric 27-09-2007 17:38

Re: weather??

32 is not "cooling down"! We have had a week of much higher than normal temps, but today it looks like 17 for a high, with some rain, and the weekend, uniformly nice: 20 for a high, low teens at night and clear. But it seems as if the real fall weather will not arrive until the end of the first week of October. Watched a show the other night on what is happening in the high Arctic, scarey. Don't expect too many cold northerly flows this winter. But maybe that's a good thing.

You mean I've been killing myself in this heat cutting, splitting, stacking firewood for naught. I'm hoping for a nice long cold winter. I love it when all of life seems to slow down with the snow storms and all!

I spent the evening visiting friends and munching on cabernet and shiraz grapes directly from the vines (leaving the stems on the vine, ) and picking/harvesting Avocados and Pomegranates , a sure sign fall/autumn is on its way

just a tip, Pomegranate juice is the best meat tenderizer there is for game meat , deer/elk/pig/bear/wild turkey etc. , (think its mentioned in the Bible), and know for a fact that the Bedu use it for tenderizing camel and goat meat , just make sure you use only the juice, not the pith or the pits ;) ;)

hey Brian, the only reason we have snow in California is so we can go ski-ing , it's what we do when we can't surf ..........:D :D :D

Mist and fog patches will clear during the morning to give a fine, mainly sunny day. Winds will be light and so it should feel very pleasant in the sunshine. Maximum temperature 17 °C;)

:Banane53::Banane53:WOOHOO, our last wicked hot day! :Banane53::Banane53:

We had yet another record high today - 98 F ~36 C. However, we now are getting a nice rain storm and the temps. are finally expected to get back to normal.

Must admit, this hot weather has be really good for some of the veges. Still harvesting alot of squashes, pumpkins, peppers, beans, and tomatoes. I'm so looking forward to putting the garden "to bed!"

Now I look forward to the sweet potato, potato, pea, greens, and butternut squash harvests! Next stop, fire in the woodstove!

Thanks for any of you who "bore" with me through our nasty weather!

Re: weather??

And the chances of a white Christmas here ... looks like a 100% deal ... we've already had quite a bit of snow ... unfortunately it looks like the temp will warm a little by monday, and with some rain in the forecast the snow will be gone. Montreal has already had major snowfalls. But they always get it. They spend over $600 million a year on snow removal. We had our first little blizzard last friday; the 401, the major freeway running just north of town, was closed for a while and our local snowplows were buzzing around for most of the night.

But Christmas without snow just isn't Christmas.

And just in case you are envying me, basking in the cool of the evening, the minus 14 is just what the thermometer shows. With the windchill it feels like minus 23. Wonderful, love it!

More snow today, between 5 and 10 cm. Great ... I just love it.

Silly question maybe: If you guys do have a major snowfall, how many snowplows do you have to handle the mess? And how long does it take them to do it?

dont think this question applies to me :D though I once saw snow on Mt. Diabalo a few years back , and think we average frost on about 3 nights per year :D
