Re: weather??

Ok ... can't resist it. Temperature25 ... clear ... gentle breeze from the lake ... a few light clouds ... I moved a table under the big maple tree in my yard ... a great beer drinking and bbqing day .... but the bad news is; same tomorrow and a little nicer for the weekend. I know where I'm spending my vacation this year; right here in Canada.

Eric 24-05-2007 17:02

Re: weather??

And the bad news did come true. Even better than yesterday. Except for the hangover. Don't drink Root Beer Schnapps on a ho s'ixgsdaojfpa[paougjpuhg ... Sorry about that, one of my cats walked across the keyboard. I'll leave in the gibberish just in case someone has a cat who might understand what it means.

Why don't you convert to metric temps ... this makes it seem cooler. Like, here it's 25 right now. Sorry about the spelling, but we are used to names like Kwartha, Ponteix, etc., .... or maybe it's the English in me. England where very little is pronounced as it is spelt!

I hear that Baffin Island is a great spot to get away from the heat.

Yes it is a 'pipe through the window sort' - (Hyndburn Homes wouldnt like me to knock a hole in the wall :D.)
They work like a fridge in reverse. I havent used it as a cooler yet but have tested it's heating function to make sure I hadn't bought something duff. You can get air coolers which just blow air over ice, and they are cheaper, but my cousin in Wales has one like that and she says she wished she had paid a bit more and got one with refridgerant.

Today we have a cold front moving in from the north of course. This will clash with the warm air mass and give us a storm, a nice relief from the muggy high 20s we had for a week. Thank god for the lake ... on the hottest days a five minute walk brings me to the water and the cool breeze.

Wish it had been a bit breezy in our factory,it's like working in a greenhouse when the suns out & i'm on 2-10(glass panels in roof). And to rub salt in my wounds there always seems to be folk sat outside pubs en route to work.

Re: weather??

We have a nice northerly air flow today .... good clean Canadian air ... the air quality is great ... the sun is out .... and the walleye season is open ... it don't get much better, and this weather is set in for a few days. With the looney at a 20 year high, I might just sail over to New York and stock up on cheap booze. A few belts of some potent potable makes the great weather even better. What goes well with bbq walleye? White wine? Vodka? Beer? What the hell, some of everything. As an aside, Ontarians spent over 4 billion dollars at the liquor stores last year. A new record. Drink up, eh!

A wonderful weekend just passed, especially great because on Saturday, Kingston celebrated First Capital Day .... (Kingston was the first capital of Canada) ... Yesterday a thunderstorm which cleared the air, and today: Back to balmy.

Which tree? I have two maples and a large elm. Tho' I don't really own them, the squirrels and the birds do:) Kingston does have a large urban forrest, though the trees took a beating in the ice storm of '99. But that's not the kind of weather I wish to brag about, altho' it was awe inspiring, 4 days of freezing rain and high winds does give an alien aspect to the landscape.

I wonder if the culvert of the River Hyndburn is big enough to cope with this abnormally high rainfall. Has anyone anything to report about the size of the river in its visible sections?

Re: weather??

It must be really abnormal weather you guys are having in the north ... it even made our local news ... pictures of choppers in Sheffield, the dam in Rotherham ... (I know; who gives a damn ... it's only Yorkshire) ... We are having a mini heat wave ... 32 with high humidex, about 5 less by the lake ... but tomorrow the weather is supposed to break, with a cold front, storms, and cooler temps. But we are having, esp in western Canada, many more tornadoes than is usual. I do think the debate on climate change is over ... climate change won.

The Hyndburn? Is that the river that I knew as the River Stink when I was decades younger? Really used to smell down by (I think) the paper mill in Rishton.

Anyway, people of Accrington, we need some rain in Kingston. Maybe a trade agreement: we would be happy to take some rain. We have to trade an abundant supply of moskies, skunk, squirells, chipmunk, deer, moose, bear, wolves, coyotes, snapping turtles, Canada geese, mallard, all kinds of game birds, and loons (altho' I hear that Ossy has an oversupply of these). Maybe some sunshine, we have enough of that to spare. And to fill all the new lakes that may soon be on your doorstep, how about some bass, lake trout, salmon, perch, walleye, whitefish, lake cod etc.:)

I remember that there was a path thro' Swales' farm, Ringstonhalgh, that came out in Rishton, and that if you went down to the end of the field, there was always a rope hanging from one of the trees, and you could swing out over the river. I wonder if the kids who fell in ever glowed in the dark after:confused:

Oh, almost forgot, it's also strawberry season, so we can trade a few tonnes of strawberries for a few thousand litres of rain:cool:

facts about lightning!
did you know you are not supposed to lie down outside during a storm!!
or that rubber soles on ya shoe are a waste of time!

Before the thunderstorm
  • Unplug all non-essential appliances, including the television, as lightning can cause power surges
  • Seek shelter if possible. When you hear thunder you are already within range of where the next ground flash may occur, lightning can strike as far as 10 miles away from the centre of a storm
  • During the thunderstormAttachment 9613
You should use the '30-30 Rule' to determine if lightning threatens :
Count the seconds between seeing the lightning, and hearing the thunder. If this time is 30 seconds or less, the lightning is close enough to be a threat. Seek shelter immediately.
Lightning may be hidden by clouds, if you can hear thunder, lightning is likely to be a threat.
    • Avoid using the phone — telephone lines can conduct electricity
    • Avoid using taps and sinks — metal pipes can conduct electricity
    • If outside avoid water and find a low-lying open place that is a safe distance from trees, poles or metal objects
    • Avoid activities such as golf, rod fishing or boating on a lake
    • If you find yourself in an exposed location it may be advisable to squat close to the ground, with hands on knees and with head tucked between them
    • Try to touch as little of the ground with your body as possible, do not lie down on the ground
    • If you feel your hair stand on end, drop to the above position immediately.
so now you know:DAttachment 9613

Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse, along comes Captain Canuck to tell you about the beautiful weather in the colonies. A little rain this morning, with some distant thunder over the lake. Temps. later today in the low 20s, a little cooler by the water, light west winds, partly cloudy, but with long sunny periods. I think I might take a trip out to the berry farm, and pick up some fresh strawberries - if you pick your own they are dirt cheap, and you can snack for free while you pick.:D:D:D

Somehow, I don't think this will cheer you up;)

Exactly right that I peed everyone off? I have a clothesline. I should use it more for clothes .... think green I guess. Now I hang bird feeders on it. When the feeders are on the line, it makes it difficult for the squirells to get at the food. Hanging out the washing would be a great idea today, because the weather, in case I forgot to mention it:D, is gorgeous. Nah, I think I'll leave it as it is. Much better looking at the sparrows, jays, and cardinals instead of my socks and shorts.

Well, I like my line dried laundry...have not had a dryer for many many years...and when I did have one it was mainly a storeplace for stuff that needed to be ironed. :)
I think probably Saturday is looking about the best day over the weekend.

did you know you are not supposed to lie down outside during a storm!!
or that rubber soles on ya shoe are a waste of time!

    • If you feel your hair stand on end, drop to the above position immediately.
so now you know:DAttachment 9613

when i was young me mam used to hide in the pantry with light out when it lightened, which as a kid,i thought hilarious, when i was older she told me her sister was killed by it when they were coming home from school, that sure as hell stopped me taking the mick.:o she also used to disconnect the telly cos she thought if it hit the ariel it would travel down the cable, dont know if thats the case?

hasnt it been nice this afternoon?, well i think i might mow the lawn in a bit, i know its getting late but its too bushy and it might rain tomorrow, well not might, probably will:D

Re: weather??

Finally, some rain, along with high winds and quite a nice little storm. Unfortunately the rain won't last, and by tomorrow, we will be back in that damned sunshine, with temps in the high 20s. Not to worry, if the long range forcast is accurate, the wonderful rain will be back at the end of next week.

This is getting beyond a a joke now ! You work all week and then can't do anything on the day off you get 'cos it's bl**dy raining again ! It's weeks since I've seen a cricket match, the bbq is unused since last August and there is no chance of me going and sorting the rabbits out in this downpour ! GRRRR. Just a couple of hours would be nice,or it could rain all it wants during the night ....:s_splash::s_splash::s_splash:

As usual, I can't resist this. Yet another gorgeous day in paradise by Lake Ontario. 25c (cooler by the Lake if that's too hot), sunny, a light breeze from the west, low humidity. Ahhhhhh.:D

Been back about 30 minutes and I can see rain on the window. Hope it won't last too long.
