Back in New England they could clean the streets and open school the next day almost regardless of the amount of snow.

Down here in Virginia, we get a dusting or a bit of sleet and they call in the National Guard. And don't even think of getting into town if you happen to get behind Aunt Harriet or Grampa Joe. The people down here creep along perfectly cleared roads merely because there is snow on the SIDES of the road.

Re: weather??

Went out for a pint last night and met a guy from Florida who said he was going stay in a hotel until the snow went away. No way he would drive in it. I suggested that he might want to take out citizenship and buy a house here because the snow might not go away until late March next year ... and this was a snowfall that didn't even slow down traffic in the city. Apart from a bad truck accident on the 401 there was only the usual number of weekend fender benders on city streets.

Eric 15-12-2007 19:14

Re: weather??

And for all you wimps across the pond, it is a balmy -15c (wind chill probably has it at -20; but it has warmed up since this morning. It is getting to the time of the year that Canadians think about wearing a warm sweater when they barbeque. But it is fun to go down to the outdoor rink behind City Hall and skate for a while ... there is alway a hot dog vendor on hand .... and see all the little kids bundled up in their snow suits skating away like Wayne Gretzky.

Probably the latter:D We had lots of snow over the weekend; yesterday the 401, the major freeway in this country was shut down, the OPP would not allow anyone on it until the snow had stopped and the highway plows had been through. These plows are as big as a house and travel down the highway at 100 kph. I am just about to shovel out my driveway for the third time in two days ... keeping ahead of the snow is the only way to do it. It's nice and still today, and sunny but cool (about -10), and you can hear the snowplows all over the city, getting things back to normal.

We haven't had it that bad here since 1947, when I recall watching my dad dig a way to the 'long drop' at the bottom of the backyard. It was as deep as a door is high

Sounds brutal ... I hope your cold spell doesn't last ... probably a run on sweaters at the local Wal Mart:eek: Just heard on the news that Montreal should be all dug out and back to normal within a week. I hate to think what will happen when winter arrives:(

Eric 20-12-2007 20:49

Re: weather??

Well it looks like the snow is over for now ... this weekend it might creep above zero, and then, joy oh joy, snow on Christmas Eve. By that time we will probably have the city dug out. It's amazing how quickly 25 huge plows, assorted monster snow blowers, and a fleet of trucks can get the city moving again.
