Ah, well...it doesn't rain in the shops!
I was hoping to get some good pics of the welsh mountains when I go on the Rheilfford Railway....if the weather doesn't shape.....I won't be going on this trip up the mountains.
Weather proof jacket or not!

Feeling really happy today -can't stop smiling! First beautiful day since returning to Italy from UK :hothothot- been for a ride along the canal and through the Elm wood. Floor carpeted with yellow and bright in the sunlight filtering through the trees - my inner child made me stop and have a kick around in the leaves -great fun and no-one was watching.:D I knew there'd been storms while I was away and at one point a birch tree had been up-rooted and fallen right across the path and the canal. Hoisted bike over and rode home...

Why am I so happy -because when I got back I found my mobile phone in the basket of my bike which I lost about 3 weeks ago! Not been a bad day so far - won 30 euros on a scratch card this morning and bought a new laptop too!:)

In fact the sun is shining on Italy today - it's all the hundreds of others who also need to be ousted that cause me to worry. Italy has always had a so-called unstable government but historically - even if they don't last long in office, effectively it's always the same lot changing position, party name and logo at every election
Oh, I'm not an Italian citizen by the way and have no right to vote here -wouldn't want to have any part...

Much like my sister in law who lived in Oz for more than 50 years without becoming a citizen(though I am pretty sure she could vote ...and was legally required to do so) you are, because you choose not to become naturalized, not a european then......you prefer to remain British...but with an Italian residency.
My sister, on the other hand is a dual citizen...she sees herself as Australian but with British roots...has embraced every aspect of Australian life.
The Aussies still see her as a 'pommie'.
Which all goes to show that nationality is more about how you see yourself, than where you actually live.

Join the club Di, I've taken stick for being a "Kraut" from some, Barry for being a "Frog", but hey broad shoulders & slopey :D (as to stick about Europe I give it out too even though I live here In Germanland Johnny foreigner deserves all he gets & I'm just working on it from the inside as the Politicos are so apt to opine better in pishing out than out pishing in ;))

The crap just rolls off & no worries, I was offered membership to the Bratty society & I explained to a rather bemused official that in no uncertain terms I was English born & bred & would take my last breath as an Englishman when I shuffle off this mortal coil at some point in the future irrespective as to where I choose to reside ;) Cut me in half & the George cross runs through my core with an edging of union (flag) colours around the edges. As Ma (MargeP) so wisely points out it's more about how you see yourself than where you live. :)

Incidentally the weather here's turning proper nippy now & there's been a couple o' mornings when I've had to have a damn good scratch  (Ice off the car). Don't think the snow's to far away & the temps are hovering between 0-3°C quite regularly of late, Winter tyres will be getting fitted tomorrow so then the weather can do what it likes. :o

Jerusalem is another good one for shaking off the homesickness.

I spent quite a bit of time in Oz and I was always homesick when I came back.......I was looking in Asda for groceries sold in Coles.......and in M&S for Myers stuff. How sad is that?

Re: weather??

I have a very funny memory of that song tied to a Xmas at my Nanny's when I was about 8 - a proper family party with a few of the oldies - Nanny's brothers Frank and Jack disappeared in to the front room all afternoon with a bottle of whiskey which they downed.
When it was time to go home, Nanny's sister Elsie went in to call them and found them both drunk -managed to get them into their hats and overcoats and brought them in to say good-bye, they had to go back to Padiham. Frank started singing Jerusalem because he was so drunk he thought he'd died and gone to heaven! Dad had to help my Grandad get them both out and into the car...
It comes back whenever I hear the song...

Margaret Pilkington 13-11-2011 16:45

Re: weather??

If the song has the power to evoke such a memory, then it surely would bring some laughter into your life when you are in the most need of it.
I only imagined the scene and I was chuckling....but then, I do have a very graphic imagination.

Don't forget Mexico;)

We have very close ties with the US ... NAFTA for eg. ... but NAFTA is the kind of thing that most European countries could live with. And NORAD ... people forget, or are not aware of, the fact that the RCAF plays a large role in the defence of North America ... in fact, we have purchased a bunch of F-35s from the US to beef up our contribution to NORAD, and to make us a force to be reckoned with in the North. However, we are an independent nation, and go our own way in foreign and domestic policy. We recognize Cuba; the yanks don't. We didn't participate in the Iraq fiasco. The yanks didn't like it; but screw 'em if they can't take a joke.:alright: And our decision proved to be the right one. We helped in the bailout of the US auto industry ... to the tune of about $25 billion, I think. The payoff for that was jobs for Canadian auto workers. The yanks are baulking at the building of the pipeline which would take Canadian oil to the Gulf ... and they have been told in no uncertain terms that if they don't want the oil, the Chinese will be more than happy to take it .... I'm using too many words again (sorry Marg P;):D) ... but the bottom line is: you can have close economic, political, and military ties without giving up sovreignty, whatever the weather.:)

Enough EU stuff: the weather here is unseasonably warm ... but a few days down the road shows below normal temps; and maybe some of the white stuff.

Beautiful weather here today - blue skies and sunny. Am in Bologna to meet up with an old friend -actually ate out "al fresco" this evening!!! Ok so they had those patio burners and gave out rugs to put round your knees (all i needed was a bath-chair and i could have been in an Agatha Christie plot...)

Spent much of the time drooling -not for the food but for the lovely Alberto Tomba -drop dead gorgeous- who was at the next table OMG!!!!!!:D

Cold though as you can see from Neptunes attributes in the photo;)

Impressive trident though:D

Lovely again today -been round the Botanical Gardens this morning and just had a fab lunch -fresh fish in a great Trattoria -can't fault Bologna, except that I've been eating too much, have sore feet from all the walking and am losing my voice (again) through talking and laughing like a hysterical teenager with my Friend Charlotte.

My thoughts precisely...and if I could I would.
I do not like winter....it isn't the cold and the damp(though I am not fond of those)...it is the lack of natural light.

And today we are having our first snowfall:alright: But if the long range forecast is correct, it will be above normal temps until my birthday. The geese have been hanging around in their thousands ... still even have swans on the lake ...

Nah ... We're Canadians:alright: We know we are going to have winter; so most folks get out and enjoy it ... kids love it ... And we have hockey, skating, curling, snow shoeing, cross country skiing, and for those adventurous souls with less brittle bodies than mine, skiing, snowboarding. We even have something in K'town called Febfest, where we get out and enjoy the worst of the winter.

Feb fest looks great fun - enjoy a skate myself but need knee pads on - we have an outdoor rink in one of the main squares in Cremona in December.

Crown Royal is a favourite of my husbands after visiting the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto several times -that and morning coffees with Baileys -keeps the cold at bay!

If we had real winter here I would enjoy it too but the slightest bit of snow seems to completely throw most people...

They are really used to snow over in Canada and are experts at dealing with and living with it.
We are near the Alps here too so usually get snow -everyone has to have snow-tyres fitted from Nov -March here or have chains for the tyres. You get a fine if they stop you and you aren't kitted out.
With the UK usually having milder winters it does seem to create havoc when you get a decent snow-fall -i remember all those people stranded on a M'way in Scotland last year....

I's the only one of it's kind round here (2 mins up the road from our farm) -the woodland is quite rare as it is mainly Elms (many got lost through Dutch elm disease back in the 80's) so it's WWF protected. The rest of this area is incredibly intensively farmed and is impenetrable -oh, and it's dead flat for me being girl from the Pennines!:)

Fab pics Eric, I'm so envious! The cat's obviously in there because she is the colour of snow! And I assume the pink blob in pic 3 is your little JRT - took me a while to see her! Glad to see she's well wrapped up! - pink for a girl!

Here are some pics I took in 2009 - we had snow again last yr but couldn't be arsed to get the camera out.

From these you will see that our house overlooks a cemetery (that's the back of our house on the extreme left in pic 1) and also that we have a pretty creative snow sculptor somewhere about.

The fifth picture shows what I don't like about snow here - they chuck so much salt around it quickly turnsto grey slush.

Wonder what we'll get this year? only one mild frost so far.

Scotch it is then ... Have to wait for some real cold weather before the ice fishing starts ... I fish in the Bay of Quinte ... Injun territory:D I love fishing ... you know what they say: "Give a man a fish, and he can eat for a day; teach him how to fish, and he will sit in a boat all day, drinking beer." :alright: Well, he will if he is Canadian;)

If your cats are anything like mine they won't go anywhere near the outdoors while there's snow about.

Thought I'd resurrect this, rather than starting a new one about the weather in Australia. We've been getting news of major fires in the Adelaide Hills, and I'm wondering how our down under friends are getting along in what seems to be severe heat.

We have the opposite ... we had a frost quake early this morning ... and there are reports of one in Ottawa, although that might have something to do with all the hot air from the House of Commons fronting with the frigid outdoor temperatures.

Not too bad here in Perth Eric, had one day at 44c,:hothothot but mostly in mid 30s. A couple of small fires.
Thank god we have good air-conditioning. Best thing since sliced bread.

The Adelaide bushfire control was helped when we had steady rain overnight, and is now80% under control,no loss of life but about 30 homes destroyed.
The weather dep,t now tell us that we could be in for the heaviest rains for some years.

Strange weather here in South Australia – a few days ago it was in the 40’s and that terrible bushfire was raging, and now we have been warned to expect major flooding in many parts of South Australia. It is very humid at the present time.

The bushfire has been devastating for many people and animals, so much destruction, heartbreaking for all concerned. The brave and caring volunteers who risk their lives fighting fires such as this are truly heroic.

My niece’s property is in one of the towns that were affected by the fire but thankfully she is all right as is her house and also her animals, though it is probably a different story for the wildlife that abounded nearby. She is one of the lucky ones, so many were not as fortunate.

Not that I have much choice, but I'll take -30 any day ... you can always keep warm by cuddling critters and drinking Fireball and hot choc.

Bottom line is tho', whatever the weather, Australia and Canada (alphabetical order;)) are always in the top ten best places on the planet in which to live. By the way, I hear that it's no longer compulsory to have a criminal record in order to get into Australia.:D

That's not nice Eric.

I thought you would have known, it's not the Fireball and hot choc that keeps you warm Eric, it's the fleas from the critters:)

Any extreme weather is hard on the critters ... and some unfortunate humans, the one's that get left behind or pushed aside by life. We like to joke about our harsh winters; but the dangers are real. If one is taking a trip, particularly in the remoter areas of this country ... and there are lots of those ... one should be prepared for the worst. Most folks I know have a survival kit in their vehicles. Best advice is: If you get stuck in the middle of nowhere (Oswaldtwistle, for example;)), stay in your vehicle, fire up some canned heat, and wait. Oh, and hope.

Many animals don't survive. Stray cats, for example. But lots of folks put out food. If they have a gut full, and they can find a warmish place to hole up, they have a good chance of making it till spring.

Meanwhile, it is most definitely brass monkey weather here ... or, as we say, cold enough to freeze the nuts off of a steel bridge.:D But it looks as if there is a warming trend coming this weekend, and we may be back to normal ... which is -5 for a daytime high. Talking of a daytime high, it's time to spark up a joint, pour a big glass of Fireball and watch the idiot box.:alright:
