No comparison, Jay old mate! The 'last Labour lot' in Hyndburn have all but vanished from the chamber, new blood and all that? With it comes new ideas and evolution according to the social climate. If you want to see crazy spending then ask Peter about his initial outlines for the Royal Wedding celebrations. Closing roads was on the table, possibly the most costly move a council could make. |
Re: Market Hall Refurbishment
I thought I had seen something on one of the newspaper boards outside the papershop.........something along the lines that six day trading in the Market hall was deemed a flop....though those are not the actual word used......'Councillors agree that six day trading has failed'.......I'm sure someone will correct me if I am wrong, I don't think I dreamed it.

Re: Market Hall Refurbishment
It's not a matter of who's changed the most, they've all changed to try & reap the benefits. At one point a party would make a policy endex, no ifs or buts that is it we will not waver !
Now, well we'll take that & maybe add this to it, take that from it & come up with something that's neither fish nor fowl, they've sold out & taken the middle ground in the hope of appealing to a wider spectrum. Look at the modern crop of Politicians, their parties & policies, so much is a dilution and/or an absorption of another parties policies that they are all readily interchangeable with each other. The exception being those old Dinosaurs pushed to the outer edges of their chosen gangs comfortable little community because they're unhappy with the way their party has capitulated & accepted mediocrity in their politics & precepts. |

Some don't like the uncovered flagged floor, because of the uneveness. Personally I think it looks good. What people are very disappointed with is the resulting feeling of it looking empty, with fewer market stalls. Residents are also very unhappy that traders are forced to work hours unacceptable to them. After they'd run their businesses successfully for years, before the six day mandate was imposed on them. Some (philistines) were even angry that tax payers' money was paid to a woman to sit crocheting in the newly 'liberated empty terrain', in the guise of 'community art'. Space which prior to that had been taken up by a market stall, selling goods people were actually prepared to purchase with real money. Besides that, it is a roaring success. At least for some. Who have a certificate to prove it. |
Re: Market Hall Refurbishment
All I can say is that NABMA must have looked at some pretty dire markets.......and been nowhere near the one in Bury.

Re: Market Hall Refurbishment
I could understand if Accrington had won the "Most Improved" Indoor Market of the Year, because whatever else is said about it (including the pros and cons of 6 day trading), it is 500% better than it was before.
As for "Best" Indoor Market, I can think of 2 or 3 that are better than it in the north west alone, so BALMA's credibility must be questioned on that one. But let's give credit where credit is due. |

it's not the stall holders fault though Mick, it's that Brticliffe persons fault, they need to increase prices so they can pay the extra rent

What I would like to know is what were the criteria and who judged it. There's a massive difference between awards given by some trade body and those given by the ones who matter, Joe Public. I'm also curious how 2011 awards are done in January. Presumably the judging took place on 2010 ? |

Re: Market Hall Refurbishment

First off, fair's fair, the renovations are impressive. The ceiling alone is a materpiece of Victorian engineering and design, and it's now in tip top condition. However, as a shopping experience, the balcony is not as impressive. First off it's so narrow, it's single file only. Anyone with big hips would need to walk sideways. The cafe was sparcely populated. Certainly compared to the downstairs ones. We were the only people, thankfully because of the lack of space, on the walkway. There are some nice little shops up there. Sadly there weren't any signs of customers up there though, besides ourselves. We felt sorry for them. Sitting there, looking bored to death. If you could use your time there producing goods, to be sold elsewhere as well, fair enough. If you were relying solely on the takings from sales made in those retail outlets alone, I'd be more than concerned that a living wage could be earned. I wouldn't want to rent those uptairs units. I'd want paying, for liberating empty terrain. Their window displays were attractive, and I wish them well. Though to survive I fear they'll need more than good wishes. |
Re: Market Hall Refurbishment
i think if the shops upstairs where advertised downstairs they might do a bit more trade

There are newly painted signs ouside the front entrances, advertising the upstairs businesses. That's why we went up. We're suckers for pretty signs. :D Anyone with a buggy, meeting another buggy, or a wheelchair, have no chance of passing each other on the walkway. It'd be like Robot Wars. Which at least might bring in the crowds downstairs, to watch the carnage. :D |
