Re: Market Hall Refurbishment
So nearly 70 markets entered the competition at £763 a go? That's comfortably £50,000 for a glass trophy and an awards ceremony plus a few civil servants. Marvellous, another reason to feel good about the way this country spends our money.
Perhaps Bury Council had the sense not to enter and just concentrated on getting on with it. |

Perhaps Bury already know they have a good market, because of the thousands of people who travel there to spend their dosh. They mightn't be as needy for a certificate, and a pat on the head. Especially when you have to pay hundreds of pounds to receive that pat. |

There is no way in this world you can convince me that there is any justification opening the Market Hall on a Sunday. The heating was on full blast ( it was usually programmed to go off Saturday night until Monday morning ), and there were 2 members of the public in there using the cafe. This was at 12.30pm, peak time for lunch. Does anyone know of any other Market Hall open on a Sunday ? |

Just been informed that Cabinet is rather lively this morning, with my personal views on the Market Hall publicly suggested for relocation up where the stallholders don't trade. Preparation H on standby.....
Fortunately, I'd already had a rather more productive meeting regarding the market's future earlier in the morning with someone who is actively seeking advice and ideas on how to improve matters and it wasn't one of the councillors. Right back up yours, my dear. |

There's a glowing letter about the Market Hall winning NABMA's dial-a-prize competition, in this week's Observer.
Praise is also heaped on Cllr. Haworth. Great thing, t'internet. Not that this means there's any bias, but it turns out the letter writer numbers one Peter Britcliffe, and several members of the lauded Cllr. Haworth's family, amongst her Facebook buddies. Probably just a coincidence. :rofl38::rofl38::rofl38::rofl38: |

Re: Market Hall Refurbishment
We had a meeting yesterday regarding the Royal Wedding celebrations for Hyndburn and the Market Hall came up.
The plans are quite impressive to be fair but Cllr Malcolm Pritchard pointed out the one vital thing missing in the town centre was somewhere to actually watch the event on television. He put forward the Town Hall but this was ruled out on grounds of cost so I suggested the Market Hall as it is going to be open anyway, something which surprisingly was not rejected out of hand. I also suggested that since the outdoor market is going to be pushed during the celebrations it would be as well to fill up the stalls inside and show it off to the full whilst the town centre is busy. They seemed quite concerned that if too many stalls were full it wouldn't leave room for the Morris dancers or the big screen. Re-opening Peel Street toilets was also mentioned by Cllr Pritchard but this is only 'being considered' at the moment as the Market Hall will be open. I give up. |

Re: Market Hall Refurbishment
I really can't see folk turning out to the Market hall to watch the Wedding.......why would you do that when you could be at home in a comfy chair with a brew( a good one) and a choccy biscuit in your mitt??
In my mind, this public junketing for the wedding is misplaced when we are in such dire financial straits.....and it smacks of a 'we're doing it better than you attitude'........or am I on my own in these cynical thoughts? |

The whole thing does have an underlying whiff of vote-grabbing though as six days later we'll all have to decide who is doing a better job of running the borough in the local elections. The only thing is that The Observer will come out on the evening of the vote so the Leader of the Council will have to do some serious buttering up of the Lancashire Telegraph that week. |

Re: Market Hall Refurbishment
I suspect, if pushed, most folks would wish them well, after so many disastrous marriages in that particular family.
As for civic celebrations, the days of referential joy at occasions such as this, have long past. Anyone interested will watch the box at home, or look at pictures of the nuptials in Hello, or Heat. |

Re: Market Hall Refurbishment
On the occasions that I visit the market hall it is because I want to shop, those occasions have been very rare of late.
If we are to have a nationwide lock-out forcing we common folk out of work for the day, I won't be anywhere near the Market hall, a TV or anyone with half a mind that is celebrating this. OOps, addendum to last sentence:- I won't be anywhere near the Market hall, a TV or anyone that is even half inclined to celebrate this. Well, actually comparing the two sentences I'll go for Number 1. Rest assured though when I do go for number 1 it won't be in the Market Hall or even their bogs. :o |
