Alcohol/Canal

I have been known to take a walk up coppice in nice weather(like what we had recently) and maybe I will take a few beers with me-- I always take them up inside a plastic bag inside my rucksack and I always bring them back home again for recycling.

I have been known to take a walk home from work via the canal and in the hot sunny days of summer-- I might get a couple of beers and walk back home with them in the sun.

Some may see this as antisocial behaviour-- Its not something I do all the time. Subjective to personal opinion I suppose.

Has anybody seen the work they have done on the canal? I guess it would be nice to ride a bike along there now. As I have gotten older-- I have grown to appreciate the nicer parts of Accrington. Its a nice walk along canal; skipping the cars, people and houses.

But this what peeed me off the other day-- I took a walk along canal from Clayton to Church as I was going to the doctors at the acorn centre. Whereabouts I leave the canal near Express Gifts-- I spotted a total mess.

Has anybody been this way lately?

I was in wonder how somebody can have so little appreciation(though obviously from what I said above-- I never had it growing up) for the effort made to make the canal tidy.

There must of been around 12-15 empty three litre bottles of cider, a dozen or so empty cans and empty vodka bottles. Has somebody had a big party here? Idiots-- what is wrong with taking the bottles home with you; or putting them in a bin or whatever.

Anybody that is nearby there should take a look-- I am left wondering if somebody at Express Gifts in Church cannot make it through a days work without having a drink or something.

It's nothing to do with alcohol really - if it's not beer tins or vodka bottles it will be pop bottles and tins. It's peoples lack of respect for their environment, same reason people don't pick up their dogs mess. It's happens all over the country everywhere.

When I was about 10 I remember the canal behind my school in Clayton (St Mary's) swarming with police and we heard that a man's body had beeen found in the water...

Been doing some research this week and it seems there was a plaque commemorating the deaths of 68 men and boys in an accident in 1883 at the pit in Clayton, on the canal bridge nearby - wonder if it's still there?

Some of the boys were only 12, they came from Ossy, Church, Altham, Clayton and Accy...

Evidently the plaque is still there ... on the Pilkington Bridge (I wonder if that has something to do with Margaret's dental work?;)) ... I can't for the life of me remember the Pilkington Bridge ... if it's not the Whalley Rd. bridge, it has to be east of there, towards Burnley.

There's a plaque that was put there a few years ago. Its a nice memorial to commemorate the disaster. I've feeling the original one disappeared.

CanalPlanAC – Pilkington Bridge No 114C — Gazetteer

The Moorfield Pit Disaster

The plaque's on this bridge as it's the nearest to the colliery, I guess. As you say, east of Whalley Road, towards Burnley.

Re: Alcohol/Canal

Never knew that bridge have a name.Always referred to it as the Burnley Road Bridge and the colliers wall, as the side looking to Clayton-Le-Moors on the road side the wall is 3ft 6ins high but to get over to the tow path it is about 15 ft high. The colliers who lived at the bottom end of Clayton walked on the canal tow path and climbed the wall, there are hand and foot holes in that side of the wall.

Re: Alcohol/Canal

Ive seen the mess referred to, and yes its covered in large cider bottles. They are frosty jacks cider for the most part, and I don't think the people who drink this stuff outdoors are worried about the environment, more where the next drink is coming from. There used to be more bottles than you see today, they got buried when the new paths were laid and surplus soil was put on either side of the towpath.

Sure you will know about the memorial too, Eric, just below Pilkington's Bridge.

This was a good thread where MickMc took some really excellent 'photos of it... #16.

Further to your interest in the plaques and memorial to the pit disaster, here are some pics I took this afternoon whilst the dog was taking me a walk, and yes he did pick up after me.

The plaque is attached to the bridge in Altham (Burnley Road). You can just see were the bridge is, the hump in the road just past the road sign, in the long shot picture.

Thats right Eric its the next bridge east from whalley road bridge, the next after that being fosters swing bridge , the next bridge after the swing bridge is what we used to call the pipe bridge which carries the thirlmere pipeline over the canal:)

Your post prompted me to do a bit of research and I think you are right as I discovered that the water goes all the way from Thirlmere to Manchester on an aqueduct - 96 miles long - apart from a tunnel under Dunmail Raise. An amazing feat!

I am surprised that barges can actually sail along on the canal, I walk it most days ineither directions from Blackburn road, Clayton. The rubbish that is either floating or partially submerged baffles me. Bottles too numerous to count, wheelie bins, fire extinguishers, fencing posts, children's prams are just a few of the things observed. The stuff that sinks such as tires bikes and other stuff are only visible when the water is clear as usually its murky

thats pretty much how the council leaves my garden after recycle collection day but cant clean up the mess they make because of health and safety from what i was told.

As for that mess if an area was ever in need of comunity service folk it was there rather than landing cushy jobs in charity shops make them tidy mess like that up :)

I noticed that too, when I first spotted it ,it was in the water close to the dunkenhalgh way bridge over the canal, it then appeared close to the wharf at clayton, now it is close to the swing bridge on its way back to church. Does this mean there is some type of flow on the canal as most objects appear to move?

Yes dave it was over a period of time, and the canal does have a "flow" water does move in that where there are locks in a canal when water is drawn down to fill them it does create a flow. And the Leeds Liverpool also has bywash weirs which keep the areas of water (pounds or ponds they are called) between the locks topped up with water which is drawn from the main length of the canal, which also creates a "flow" and boats make water move when they are sailing past because they draw water under and around them with their propellers.

That makes sense, you tend to think of a canal as static water.

As the canal is always my starting point for a walk I ten to notice the same crap on a regular basis, I have noticed that a specific piece of rubbish, take the extinguisher for example, will move in one direction for a period of say a week or two, and will then reverse direction and go back the way it came. I first spotted the extinguisher close to the Emerson and Renwick building in Church, it was then spotted moving toward Clayton, and was spotted adjacent to express gifts between the two bridges over the canal in Clayton, the last time I saw it , it was in the vicinity of Riley's swing bridge.

At the expense of sounding like a rubbish nerd I have never noticed flotsam move in one direction and keep going indefinitely without a reverse at some point.

I will stop there as I am starting to sound a bit anorak:silly:

That is brilliant, I for one hope you take the time to give the latest updates about the vicinity of the fire extinguisher.
It would also be interesting to note how close this item comes close to the edge of the canal or wether it floats mid-stream over a longer period.

Further to all your requests for more information with regard to the extinguisher, I can now report it has passed Riley's swing bridge and is heading towards Church. However if you look at the photos you will see a barge heading towards it from the Church end, this puts a variable into the mix in that will the wash from the barge may induce a change of direction. Stay tuned for further reports.

It boggles the mind to think that people will hump rubbish miles to dump in the canal, when it would be easier to take it to the tip or have the council collect it.

I noticed shopping trolleys were there in large numbers, now don't get me started on shopping trolleys or I will have to upload my photo collection of aquatic trolleys....................I think I've said to much on trolleys....will leave that one there

Our record for trolleys was 46 all taken from the Blackburn flight of locks when drained for winter stoppage work, the record for off the boat collected belongs to the Burnley mile we got 18 on one pass of the mile:eek: the only good thing about them was we could weigh them in for the jolly boys outing at christmas:alc::alc:

I know they have been placed in some rivers for man made "reefs" they do have algae all over them if they have been in the water long enough.

Here is one placed in the River Hyndburn, as you can see a reef is starting to form.

You may be right, MargaretR. Frightening thought for Morcambe folk!
It's just that I was always told a nit comb was all you needed.

Good grief, is that what you need for German crabs? Still, a bit messy but easier than using a shopping trolley.

God grief no ! A small moustache, firm commands & paperwork in triplicate, failing that the threat of invasion usually produces results. :D

Who is joking? You saw what MargaretR said. Doesn't sound like a nit comb will be much use on the Bay.

However if you look at the photos you will see a barge heading towards it from the Church end, this puts a variable into the mix in that will the wash from the barge may induce a change of direction. Stay tuned for further reports.

I am typing this in crayon as I am not allowed anything sharp in here...........................coming nurse.....is it time for my pobbies

The object has indeed moved it has for the first time crossed the canal to the opposite side, unfortunately it has snagged on a tree branch. Although as predicted its reversed direction and is within spitting distance from Riley's swing bridge.

Will leave it there for now, got to sort out my anoraks

It's interesting to see that the object seems to be quite bouyant..maybe 50% of it above the waterline... does this suggests the object is empty of it's contents, or maybe not?

I can see you have given this some thought, it is a powder extinguisher and has indeed been discharged. I suspect there has been some seepage through the valves as it has been in the water for some time.

Even without the extinguisher to provide a focal point that is a very nice photo with the reflection in the water.

Wonder if there's a canal site like Cmon's ship site - we could look for it on there. HMS Dry Powder, fire prevention vessel.

Thanks for all the interest, I cant manage daily updates, as I have to check on my aquatic shopping trolly sites, but will map its progress as much as I can. I just hope all this publicity will not effect its progress by persons helping it along.

Will try to get out as much as I can though to check, it is a bit difficult here in the secure unit, but will do my best.:silly::silly::silly::silly:

I think with two of us reporting its progress it should be easy to define how far it gets before it goes in reverse, I was thinking of attaching a fisherman's luminous night float so it could be tracked in the dark.............then I thought that would be silly.
