Re: Today in pictures
On the opposite side of the memorial is a seated mother with a baby.......I took this to be - soldier is the face of war.....Mother and babe - the face of peace and hope for the future.
It may not be meant to convey that, but that is how I read it. I really like the memorial and spent quite a long time reading the plaque and looking at the friezes. and yet the young soldier looks somehow not of the era. He looked more current. I thought the statue on the top looked a lot like the one in Gatty park....now I know the same sulptor was involved in both of them, it does make sense |

Today in Pictures, an appointment for "She who must be obeyed" at the Pals centre meant a walk around Platts Lodge for todays expedition.
1. It was raining at this point. 2. Woodnook Water as it passes the lodge. 3. And then whizzes past the Pals Centre. 4. The last time I was here there was buckets full of the caterpillar of the Cinnabar Moth. This was the only one I could find. 5.The factory behind used to be the toffee factory I think. 6. Giant Reed growing in the run off pond. 7. Run off pond from the other end. 8. Looking across the lodge from the Ormerod Street end. 9. It took me ages to buff up this greenbottle so you could see your face, actually if you look closely you can see my camera. 10. Still at the Ormerod Street end, then it was back to the car. |

Today in Pictures, started on the canal, headed for the vets, and ended in Padiham.
1. There was a lot of these fluttering about today, the Speckled Wood Butterfly. 2. There was a bit of a drop in temperature today, the leaves are turning, and the buttercups that Bob bobbed about in have long gone. 3. Heading home past the colliery memorial. Then the vets for a booster jab, I took Bob for company. 4. On the way back, saw a park in Padiham ( Memorial ), it was a bit like the tardis, it opened up behind the wall to a park, a wooded walk, a river, and a greenway that took us to Simonstone. 5. At this point I was not sure where we were going, but using the "I wonder where that goes " principal we headed that way, or was it the other way. 6. Ended up on the Greenway, it looks like it used to be a railway. 7. After a long walk we approached Simonstone, I never knew there was a bridge here, and I have driven over it scores of times. 8. Even walking on tarmac he gets wet feet. 9. After heading back, we veered left into the park, don't know what this is about, but its different. 10. Back up through the park, and off to find the car. |
