Today in Pictures was aborted due to the rain appearing to be horizontal, and straight towards me, however with a stiff upper lip, and a very wet bottom one, I managed a few photos before I threw the towel in.
1. Huncoat stocks. 2. Stocks as we walk away. 3. Heading towards the Memorial on the hill top. 4. A view to the right over the rooftops 5. A bit further down. 6. Its a good view from here. 7. Then the weather closes in. 8. Down the field and a right turn, Hapton in the distance. 9. Where the road meets the stream. 10. With a bridge for pedestrians. With that, the thought of a brew and a chorley cake took over. I will however do this walk again when the sun shines |

Re: Today in pictures
Is that cross a war memorial? I don't know Huncoat at all. Just looked at the OS map and I see there is a Castle (rems of) marked near the motorway junction 8. Does anyone know anything about that?

Re: Today in pictures
Any particular reason why it appears to be a Celtic cross ?

The village of Hapton is to be found at the foot of Hameldon Hill, overshadowed by Pendle Hill to the north and the towns of Burnley and Accrington to the east and west. It is a typical Lancastrian industrial village with its streets of terraced hous Hapton Castle (The Gatehouse Record) |

Hapton Castle became uninhabited and fell into decay. All that remains now is a low wall 2 ft high between two trees in Castle Clough and an Elizabethan coin which was found on the site. Another site has this Tourist guide to Hapton (From Lancashire Telegraph) Castle Clough Gorge signed just off the Accrington Road was carved out as the ice ages melted some 10,000 years ago and glaciers ground out a valley. This produced impressive rock formations which can be explored overlooking a nature trail. http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com..._choices_i.png http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com...choices_en.png http://oas.newsquestdigital.co.uk/5/...3594%7C3419%7C This is a real joy at bluebell time, but of interest all through the year. Nearby are a few bits of masonry, all that remains of Hapton Castle. This was not so much a castle as a fortified manor house built in 1242. |
